Asencio cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Asencio proved well prepared for the move up to Triple-A late in 2014, as he hit .333/.372/.568 with five homers in just 21 games with El Paso, from .284/.323/.409 in 117 games with Double-A San Antonio to begin the year. However, the Padres needed to protect some of their more promising prospects from the Rule 5 draft and Asencio was the casualty, though he could work his way back onto the 40-man eventually.

Asencio was designated for assignment by the Padres on Thursday.
Asencio spent 2014 between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting .291/.330/.433 with 15 home runs and 59 RBI combined in the two levels. The Padres needed to make moves to protect players from being taken in the Rule 5 Draft, and Asencio lost a spot on the 40-man because of it. The 24-year-old could earn a spot back on the roster with another good offensive season in 2015.

Asencio, who made his debut at Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday, entered as a pinch hitter and proceeded to tally two singles in as many at-bats.
Prior to the promotion, Asencio spent the entirety of the season at Double-A San Antonio, putting together a steady .284/.323/.409 line, 10 home runs, and eight stolen bases in 455 at-bats. Moreover, the 24-year-old outfielder displayed respectable patience at the plate, striking out in only 11.7 percent of his plate appearances. It's unclear if he'll be called up when rosters expand in September, but he's put himself in a position to factor into the Padres' outfield mix in 2015.
