The right-hander was able to turn in sub-3.00 ERAs in 2013 and 2014 despite poor walk rates, but his issues with control have come back to bite him this year, as he's posted a 4.71 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 17 appearances between Seattle and Chicago. Medina figures to merely provide bullpen depth, working in low-leverage spots, over the remainder of the regular season.

Medina pitched 1.2 scoreless innings Friday, allowing no hits and one walk with one strikeout, as he continues an impressive spring training.

In six spring outings, Medina has allowed one run, three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 7.1 innings. He often pitched in late innings last season, but he's probably better suited for middle relief.

Medina gave up two runs over 1.1 innings Sunday, allowing five hits (including a homer) and a walk, striking out three.

Medina also gave up two runs to the Astros on Friday. He'll hope for better results on the road trip to Toronto this week.

Medina came into the game in a low leverage situation, with the Mariners up 8-1. He's having a good year (2.13 ERA, 1.134 WHIP), though the Mariners don't turn to him first or even second in close-and-late situations.

The Mariners have denied Yoervis Medina permission to pitch in the Venezuelan Winter League.

It's a workload concern. Medina made 63 relief appearances this past season as a rookie at the major league level, posting a superb 2.91 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 68 innings. The 25-year-old right-hander is expected to serve as a setup man in 2014.

Oliver Perez struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth, Medina wasn't quite so dominant in the 10th, as he allowed a hit and struck out no one, but he recorded his third win. Perez and Medina are clearly Eric Wedge's preferred options out of the pen right now. They'll probably share save chances for the next couple of weeks.
