Wed Jul 30 201415:47Chavez (knee) announced retirement Wednesday
Chavez (knee) announced his retirement Wednesday, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports.
The 36-year-old Chavez enjoyed a superb 17-year career, winning six consecutive Gold Glove awards to accompany his six 25-plus homer seasons, most of those coming with the "Moneyball"-era A's. Injuries marred his production after he hit 30, with his latest knee issue proving too painful for him to continue playing. With his retirement taking effect immediately, Chavez, who was listed on the Diamondbacks' 60-day DL, will voluntarily forfeit over $1 million in salary.
Wed Jul 30 201415:47Eric Chavez decides to retire from baseball
Eric Chavez has retired from baseball.
Chavez has battled a nagging knee issue this season and the 36-year-old has decided to hang it up rather than continue rehabbing. He won six Gold Gloves and was one of the better players in the AL during the early 2000s. Injuries wrecked a big chunk of his career, but he deserves credit for making it back to be a useful player for a few years before the injury bug ultimately did him in. "I'm very lucky," Chavez said Tuesday. "I just enjoyed competing and being on the field. There's nothing like winning at the major-league level."

Sun Jun 8 201414:25Eric Chavez's knee remains an issue
Eric Chavez has been dealing with a left knee injury all season.
Chavez felt something in the knee pop the day before the Diamondbacks' trip to Australia, and he's yet to experience any improvement. The ailment helps to explain why he's seen so little time at third base (with Martin Prado moving to left field) following Mark Trumbo's (foot) injury. The D'Backs will have a discussion with Chavez after Sunday's game to determine what to do next.

MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez says re-signing Eric Chavez has "become a priority" for the Diamondbacks.
But the veteran infielder is also drawing interest from several other clubs -- including the Rangers, Yankees, Marlins and Rays -- so it might take more than Arizona is willing to give. Tue Dec 10 201313:23Report: Seven teams interested in Eric Chavez
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Rangers, Rays, Pirates, Yankees, Nationals, Diamondbacks and Braves are among the teams who have expressed interest in Eric Chavez.
A return to New York could be complicated by the team's recent addition of Kelly Johnson. Chavez earned $3 million this past season with the Diamondbacks while hitting .281/.332/.478 with nine home runs and 44 RBI in 80 games. The high level of interest in a weak market for corner infielders should net him a nice contract.
