Rays activated 1B Brandon Allen from the 15-day disabled list; designated him for assignment.
This means Allen's tenure with the Rays will likely end after seven games and 13 at-bats. The 26-year-old was placed on the disabled list about a month ago with a quad strain and batted .255 (13-for-51) with two homers in 14 rehab games with High-A Charlotte. He was out of options, so he couldn't be sent to the minors. While Allen has yet to show that he can produce against major league pitching, he'll likely draw interest on waivers.

Athletics' manager Bob Melvin has confirmed that Brandon Allen will start at first base on Opening Night against the Mariners.
In other words, Allen has officially beaten out Kila Ka'aihue for the starting first base job. Melvin indicated as much over the weekend, so this announcement doesn't come as a big surprise. We still like Allen's power potential, but it's tough to give much of an endorsement in fantasy leagues.

Sun Mar 25 201222:57Melvin: Allen likely to start at 1B, 3B open
A's manager Bob Melvin said he is leaning toward starting Brandon Allen at first base Opening Night and is currently undecided as to who will start at third.
Allen has crushed the ball this spring, so that announcement was expected. Melvin's indecision about the hot corner is also to be expected, as Scott Sizemore's injury exposed Oakland's lack of depth. Eric Sogard started at third base in an exhibition game Sunday, but most have expected Josh Donaldson to get the majority of playing time. Stay tuned.

Sun Mar 4 201218:34Brandon Allen drives in seven for A's
Brandon Allen had a grand slam, a two-run double and an RBI groundout to lead the A's to a 12-10 defeat of the Cubs on Sunday.
Allen looked like the odd-man out after all of Oakland's late-winter additions, but he could yet win a job with a strong spring. He has plenty of power, so if he can hit just .240, he'd likely be a modest asset as a first baseman or DH.

Thu Jan 19 201210:58Athletics shopping Brandon Allen
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Athletics are shopping Brandon Allen.
The Athletics have Daric Barton and Chris Carter as options at first base and Coco Crisp, Seth Smith, Josh Reddick and Collin Cowgill for their outfield, so Allen looks like the odd man out. The 25-year-old was acquired from the Diamondbacks last July in the Brad Ziegler trade. He has regularly mashed minor league pitching, but has an ugly .210/.297/.383 batting line over 367 plate appearances in the majors. We wouldn't be surprised if another organization takes a shot, but It's unlikely the A's would get much in return.
