Sun Aug 9 201509:53Gutierrez signed minor-league contract with Nationals on Sunday
Gutierrez signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Sunday, Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors reports.
Gutierrez, who was released by the Phillies earlier this month, has supplied a 3.66 ERA and 42:18 K:BB ratio across 51.2 innings at the Triple-A level this season. He didn't receive a promotion to the big club as quickly as expected while he was in the Philadelphia organization, but the 32-year-old is hoping to latch on with the playoff-contending Nationals at some point later this season if he continues to excel at Triple-A Syracuse.

Gutierrez signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies on Monday. He will report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Gutierrez, who was released by the Giants' organization earlier this season, struggled at Triple-A Sacramento, sporting a 4.39 ERA across 26.2 innings. However, he has proven himself a decent option out of the bullpen at the major league level in the past. He made 61 appearances for the Giants in 2014, holding a 3.96 ERA with a 44:16 K:BB ratio. He should provide organizational depth for the Phillies' bullpen.

The Giants designated Gutierrez for assignment Thursday.
Gutierrez posted a 3.12 ERA, .228 BAA and 10 holds in the first half of 2014 but pitched almost exclusively in low-leverage situations after the All-Star break. He still finished with 61 appearances, fifth-most on the team, but clearly the Giants had no intention of going to arbitration with the 31-year-old.

Gutierrez (biceps) saw his first action since experiencing pain in his biceps August 24. He gave up a run over his only inning of work in the loss to the Rockies on Wednesday.
Prior to the game, Gutierrez received a cortisone shot in his arm to help alleviate the pain. He apparently felt good enough to play, and the Giants wouldn't have pushed him without knowing that he was healthy due to having a deep bullpen with rosters expanding this week.

Gutierrez received a cortisone shot in his right biceps last Thursday and remains in the recovery process, Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
This would help explain why Gutierrez hasn't seen any usage out of the bullpen since Aug. 24. With the Giants bolstering their relief corps with a slew of September call-ups, Gutierrez won't be rushed back to action until the pain in his biceps fully dissipates.

Gutierrez surrendered five runs on five hits and a walk over 1.1 innings against the Nationals on Sunday.
Gutierrez was one of several Giant relievers that couldn't stop the bleeding and preserve the win for Ryan Vogelsong. The 31-year-old journeyman was a revelation for the Giants early in the season, but he has fallen apart in August, posting a 7.11 ERA in 10 appearances.
