C Humberto Quintero was assigned to to a minor league contract on Tuesday.

Quintero was reassigned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday, ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes reports.

This was expected when Qunitero accepted a $100,000 retention bonus to stick around. With Christian Vazquez (elbow) out for the season, Quintero will be the third catcher in the organization, behind Ryan Hanigan and Sandy Leon. Of course, top prospect Blake Swihart is seemingly on track to reach the majors this season, so Quintero may not be needed for long.

Quintero accepted a $100,000 retention bonus to stay with the Red Sox organization, the Boston Globe reports.

Quintero's acceptance of the bonus and Boston's willingness to grant it suggests the catcher will be around with the team, likely at Triple-A Pawtucket.

Quintero served as the catcher in Monday night's game against Minnesota. He went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

The assignment of Christian Vazquez (elbow) to the 60-day disabled list clarified the catching situation in Boston somewhat: Ryan Hanigan will be the primary starter while Quintero and the newly acquired Sandy Leon vie for the backup job. Leon has the edge because he's out of minor-league options and was slid onto the 40-man roster when Vazquez was assigned to the DL.

Quintero would be an option to serve as Boston's second catcher if Christian Vazquez (elbow) begins the season on the DL, as expected, CSNNE's Sean McAdam reports.

Quintero has a .234 career average with 20 home runs in 1,423 career plate appearances, so he is a very low-end offensive option behind the plate. The other candidate for the role would be top prospect Blake Swihart, whom fantasy owners would be much more interested in.

Quintero has several years of major-league experience and will likely be the emergency call-up to Boston if a catcher is needed. The Red Sox are going to let top prospect Blake Swihart slow-cook at Triple-A Pawtucket this season, so adding Quintero gives them an MLB-ready backstop in the minors.

Quintero was called up from Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.

The 35-year-old hit .290/.311/.425 with four homers in 73 games with Tacoma this season, numbers pretty much right in line with his career norms at the Triple-A level (.290/.328/.433). Veteran catching depth never goes out of demand, and that's exactly what he'll provide Seattle over the final four weeks of the regular season.
