LHP Yohan Flande declined a minor league assignment and became a free agent. Flande had appeared in 37 games (20 starts) for the Rockies the last three seasons. He had no decisions and a 12.27 ERA in two relief outings for Colorado this year.

Flande, 30, pitched for the Rockies in 2014 and 2015, going 3-9 with a 4.95 ERA in 35 games, 20 starts. The Rockies needed a fresh arm for their bullpen, someone capable of pitching multiple innings after using six relievers Friday, three Thursday and five Wednesday. Manager Walt Weiss said, "First and foremost we need arms. We need some innings." Weiss lauded Flande for being a strike-thrower, a competitor and a versatile pitcher, who can start or relieve and in the latter role can pitch multiple innings.

The Rockies haven't ruled out the possibility of Flande returning this season, but it will have to come out of the bullpen, as manager Walt Weiss has already set his rotation for the final week. Because the bruised knee has kept Flande out since Sept. 19, the lefty won't have enough time to get stretched back out for a starting role before the season ends.

After announcing Wednesday that rookie Jon Gray (manager's decision) and Jorge De La Rosa (Achilles) would be shut down for the season, Rockies manager Walt Weiss set his rotation for the weekend series against the Dodgers, with Flande not included among the scheduled starters. Flande, who was in line to toe the rubber Friday, will be replaced by David Hale in the outing. The 29-year-old is still recovering from a knee bruise he sustained in a Sept. 19 start, but has shown improvement of late and could be cleared to throw again next week, though it's unclear if he would be available to start or simply as a bullpen option.

Flande, who was forced to exit his start last week against the Padres after taking a line drive to the knee, said that he had showed improvement in recent days, but he's yet to receive clearance for weight-bearing activity. The Rockies will go with David Hale for Friday's start and hope that Flande will be ready to pitch by the following week.

Flande was hit by a line drive during Saturday's game against the Padres and was clearly favoring his leg after the game, however, X-rays revealed he merely bruised his left patella tendon. It's unclear if the 29-year-old will return to the rotation with only two weeks remaining in the season.

Jedd Gyorko hit one right back at Flande with two out in the top of the third inning, and the ball bounced off Flande's knee and into foul territory in left. Flande was clearly in pain as he walked off the field, but the extent of the injury is uncertain. Christian Bergman came on in relief.

Flande (3-3) had a short night, giving up four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three in Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Mariners.

Saturday's outing was Flande's second sub-five inning performance in a row, perhaps spelling the end of his time in Colorado's rotation. After posting a 7.11 ERA in 31.2 Triple-A innings this season, the journeyman southpaw tossed just one quality start in nine major league outings.

Flande (3-2) did not look sharp on Sunday, surrendering six runs on eight hits and a walk through 4.1 innings in a 7-4 loss to the Giants.

Flande was removed after throwing 88 pitches, but his exit was hardly due to a set pitch count --- he gave up five extra-base hits and never really looked in sync on the mound. The 29-year-old gave up another home run on Sunday, this time to Buster Posey, to make it 10 homers allowed in his last six starts on the mound. While it doesn't appear as if his next start against the Mariners on Saturday is in jeopardy, his tendency to give up the long ball is something to monitor moving forward.

Flande gave up two runs and struck out five over five innings, but didn't factor into the decision in the Rockies' 6-4 loss in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Diamondbacks.

Because he opened the season in a relief role, the Rockies have been reluctant to let Flande toss much more than 70 to 90 pitches a start, as he was limited to just 79 throws despite pitching well Thursday. The lefty has generally been solid since joining the rotation in late July, but the long ball is beginning to become an issue for him. He's surrendered nine homers over his last five turns.

Flande allowed six hits and five walks in just five innings of work in Atlanta on Wednesday, but limited the damage to only three runs. He struck out four and didn't factor into the decision.

Considering that two of the hits he gave up were homers, it's nothing short of shocking that Flande was able to hold the Braves to just three runs, but he worked in and out of trouble all evening. With a poor 32:17 K:BB in 50.2 innings and Coors Field for a home park, he doesn't make for a very appealing fantasy option. Even those in NL-only leagues should think twice before deploying Flande in his next start against the strong Arizona offense.

Flande improved his record to 3-1 after holding the Nationals to two runs on three hits and three walks over seven innings in Thursday's victory.

Flande helped his own cause at the plate by singling twice and plating a run, while making it through seven frames in a rather economical 89 pitches. The lefty followed the template for success at Coors Field by inducing 11 ground balls on the night, the third straight start in which he's recorded 10 or more in that department.

Flande allowed three of the runs off homers, but aside from those mistakes, he pitched pretty well. After the demotion of Eddie Butler, it appears Flande will stay in the rotation for the time being. He has yet to go past the sixth inning, so that'l be the next step for the young lefty. Since July 3, Flande has lowered his ERA over four runs and he would be an interesting pitcher if he didn't have to pitch in Coors Field. His next start is scheduled at home against Washington next Thursday.

In his three starts, he's yet to go beyond the fifth inning, though he's been effective, posting a 3.86 ERA this season. His next start will be Sunday against the Padres.

Flande came on in relief Wednesday against the Mariners to toss a scoreless 11th inning. He was later credited with his second win of the season when Michael McKenry hit a walk-off homer in the bottom half of the inning.

Flande tossed five innings versus the Cardinals just three days ago, but after burning through six of their relievers in Wednesday's game, the Rockies were forced to draw from their rotation for backup. While those in NL-only leagues that opted to keep Flande active were surely happy he picked up the win in the relief appearance, it now puts his scheduled start Saturday in Washington in some peril. The Rockies could opt to push him back an extra day or two and call up a minor-league arm to make a one-time spot start.

The Rockies are still in the process of building up Flande's innings count after he spent the previous few weeks working in long relief, so manager Walt Weiss pulled him after 72 pitches in Sunday's outing, despite his solid performance. Flande figures to earn a third start later this week in Washington, but because he likely won't work deep into the game, he shouldn't be counted on to deliver strong results.

Flande won in his first game of 2015 on Monday against the Cubs, as he allowed just one run on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four.

Flande posted a 4.97 ERA and 2.5 K/BB in 17 innings of mop-up duty before getting his first start of the year Monday. Flande's ERA is down to 3.68 after the solid start. He rode nine ground balls to the victory, and that looks like it'll be the key to any continued success in the big leagues. Flande owns a 62.3 percent ground ball rate behind a heavy 90.5 MPH sinker.

Flande will get the start Tuesday night against the Cubs, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Flande has worked sparingly in long relief since coming up from Triple-A Albuquerque in early-June, appearing in four games and allowing two earned runs on seven hits over 9.2 cumulative innings. He'll make his first major league start of the season after starting 12 games between Double-A and Triple-A. Flande also made 10 starts for the Rockies in 2014.
