Punto will not be at Diamondbacks camp and won't play this season, Jody Jackson of Fox Sports Arizona reports.
While Punto hasn't retired, the fact that he won't play this season could eventually lead to a decision to retire. He is now 36 years of age and coming off the worst season of his career, batting .207/.296/.589 with two home runs and 14 RBI over 73 games. The utility infielder debuted in the majors in 2001, and appears to be nearing the end of his rope.
Wed Jan 7 201513:03Punto agreed to terms on contract with Diamondbacks on Wednesday
Punto agreed to terms on a contract with the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.
The details of Punto's contract are unclear at this point, but it appears he will head to the desert in Arizona to play in the desert. The 37-year-old figures to face an uphill battle for a roster spot with the D-backs, who have depth at his main position (second base) with Aaron Hill and Cliff Pennington. Punto will look for a strong spring training for an opportunity to nab a bench spot in the infield, but there's no guarantee he will be on the roster out of spring training.
Fri Dec 19 201415:13Punto released by A's on Friday
Punto was released by the A's on Friday, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Punto had been signed to a two-year deal before the 2014 season, but was released today to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. In his one season with the the A's, Punto struggled with injuries, appearing in only 73 games, hitting .207 over 198 at-bats. He will likely find a spot on a Major League roster as a utility infielder before Spring Training.
Sat Sep 27 201419:35Punto removed from lineup for Saturday's game against Rangers
Punto was removed from the lineup for Saturday's game against the Rangers, according to MLB.com's Jane Lee.
Punto was in the original lineup for the A's, but the Rangers scratched lefty Derek Holland (head) and are now starting righty Scott Baker, so A's manager Bob Melvin switched from a righty-heavy lineup to a lefty-heavy one. Punto was replaced at second base by Eric Sogard.
Thu Sep 11 201418:43Punto could be candidate to start at second base Friday
Punto could be a candidate to start at second base Friday, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.
Punto was activated from the disabled list Tuesday, and provided he remains free of hamstring discomfort, look for him to start in the infield for the Athletics. Alberto Callaspo committed several defensive mistakes at second base during the team's previous series against the White Sox, so manager Bob Melvin may look to sure up the position during the important upcoming series in Seattle. Punto isn't much of a threat with the stick, however, so don't look too far into this from a fantasy perspective.
Tue Sep 9 201414:08Punto, on disabled list since Aug
Punto, on the disabled list since Aug. 3 due to a strained right hamstring, was activated Tuesday.
Punto is more of a depth player at a few positions who gives manager Bob Melvin a switch-hitting option when needed, but without a starting spot (not to mention his .579 OPS this season) his production will probably be limited with such little time left in the regular season.

Punto will test out his hamstring on the field Saturday and says he feels much better overall, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports.
He received a cortisone shot three days ago, and could be activated from the DL in a the near future. However, upon his activation he will still be just a platoon/utility option for Oakland, making him an afterthought in most fantasy leagues.
Wed Sep 3 201414:58Punto (hamstring) received cortisone shot for strained hamstring...
Punto (hamstring) received a cortisone shot for his strained hamstring on Tuesday, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.
Punto got the shot in an effort to move closer to making a return from an injury to his hamstring that has sidelined him for over a month. He's been progressing well and was able to take batting practice last week, but he's still probably a few days away from rejoining the team.
Fri Aug 29 201419:46Punto (hamstring) still few day away from being able to test out...
Punto (hamstring) is still a few day away from being able to test out his hamstring to the fullest extent, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.
Punto participated in batting practice Monday, and is still working on his recovery from the injury that sent him to the disabled list Aug. 2. With Jed Lowrie also set to rejoin the team soon, Punto may see limited action even when he does return.
Mon Aug 25 201418:18Punto (hamstring) took batting practice Monday
Punto (hamstring) took batting practice Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
It's the first time Punto has taken batting practice since landing on the DL, and a rehab assignment may not be far for the utility infielder. He's been running at close to full strength over the last couple of days, so it wouldn't seem that he has many more benchmarks to hit before he's cleared for game action.
Tue Aug 19 201418:42Punto (hamstring) remains limited to light jogging
Punto (hamstring) remains limited to light jogging, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Punto has progressed a bit since this point last week, when he was still shut down from running entirely, but he's not looking like a good bet to return before the end of the month. The 36-year-old has not yet resumed swinging a bat.
Wed Aug 13 201418:43Punto (hamstring) has yet to resume running
Punto (hamstring) has yet to resume running, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
With Punto still shut down from running due to the hamstring injury, it's safe to say he will not be ready to return from the DL on Monday when first eligible. While there's a chance he could be cleared to resume running next week, it may be a long shot to think he could make it back before the end of the month.
Sat Aug 2 201419:16Punto (hamstring) headed for 15-day DL
Punto (hamstring) is headed for the 15-day DL, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Punto was held up at third base Saturday and immediately grabbed at his hamstring, and he was later diagnosed with a strain. The injury will push him to the DL, possibly opening the door for Andy Parrino to back up Eric Sogard at second base. Scott Sizemore, who was released by the Yankees, is reportedly being considered as well.

Punto was diagnosed with a strained right hamstring after leaving Saturday's game in the fifth inning, MLB.com's Jane Lee reports.
Should Punto miss time beyond Saturday, there could be a few more at-bats available for Alberto Callaspo and Eric Sogard, the latter of whom replaced Punto in Saturday's game.
Sat Aug 2 201417:42Punto left during fifth inning of Saturday's game against Kansas...
Punto left during the fifth inning of Saturday's game against Kansas City with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.
Punto was rounding third base after Jed Lowrie hit a single to left field, but Punto's leg went lame and he grabbed for his hamstring. He managed to limp back to third base, but Eric Sogard replaced Punto as the base runner after that. If his day is over, he finishes 1-of-2 with a single and an RBI.
Sun Jun 8 201418:03Punto on base four times, drives in two Sun.
Nick Punto went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in a win over the Orioles on Sunday.
Punto also walked twice, reaching base four times in the game. He delivered a two-run single in the fifth inning, giving him 10 RBI for the year. The part-time player is batting .245/.350/.311 this season.

Thu May 29 201419:19Nick Punto homers, walks three times
Nick Punto hit his annual home run and walked three times against the Tigers on Thursday.
The homer was the 18th of his career. If it holds up, it'd be the eighth season of his career with exactly one homer (his career high is four). Punto started at shortstop against right-hander Rick Porcello today to give Jed Lowrie a day off. He's mostly played second base against lefties, but given that he's outhitting Eric Sogard there, perhaps some additional at-bats could be coming his way. Of course, neither is ever going to me of much use in fantasy leagues, even AL-only leagues.
