OF Cody Asche, on the disabled list since April 2 with an oblique strain, is scheduled to be examined in Philadelphia on Wednesday, according to manager Pete Mackanin. "According to what I've read on the report," Mackanin said, "he thinks he's turned a corner to be able to possibly start doing some baseball activities, or at least more rehab."

Asche went 3-for-4 with two solo homers and three runs scored in Tuesday's 6-4 victory over the Marlins.

Asche's round-trippers came in the fourth and eighth innings, respectively, and now give him four gopher balls in the month of September. The 25-year-old has displayed some pop over 390 at-bats for Philadelphia this season, totaling 22 doubles, two triples, and 11 homers over 390 at-bats. Asche has also slugged four homers against the Marlins this season.

Asche went 1-for-5 with a three-run homer in Monday's 8-7 loss to the Nationals.

Asche's outfield experiment came to an abrupt end with Maikel Franco's disabled list stint; the 25-year-old has instead played nearly every day at third base, yielding occasional starts to Andres Blanco. Asche has likely hit his offensive ceiling, having now posted a sub-.700 OPS in two straight seasons with over 400 at-bats.

Asche is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Cubs.

Asche tallied just three hits while starting the last six games, so manager Pete Mackanin decided to hold him out Saturday. Andres Blanco will man the hot corner for the Phillies in Asche's place.

Asche is expected to see time at third base over the remainder of the season, the Phillies' official site reports.

Maikel Franco is questionable to return this season, and the Phillies want to look at Aaron Altherr and Darnell Sweeney in the outfield, so the team will have Asche return to his old position. He made his first start at third in nearly four months on Friday and went 1-for-2 with two walks.

Mackanin said Altherr will cut into the playing time of both Asche and Domonic Brown. Mackanin indicated Altherr will also start against righties. It remains to be seen if that will also impact Asche or if Brown will start to sit more against righties.

With lefty Jon Niese due up for New York, Asche will head to the bench in favor of Aaron Altherr in left field. Asche has gone hitless in his last two starts but is still sitting with an .846 OPS for August, by far his best mark in any month this season (.753 in April).

Asche is far from an exciting player, but he's a solid utility player that can play all over the diamond. He now has a .251 average and six homers in 85 games played this season.

There's no indication that Asche is suffering, so it's a bit surprising that he'll sit for two straight day despite the right-handed Shelby Miller on the mound for the Braves. Ben Revere will start in left field in his place, while Odubel Herrera will start in center.

Asche extended his hitting streak to five games, and he has multiple hits in three of those outings. He's putting together his best month of the season, with five doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI in 67 at-bats.
