Mon Apr 14 201419:13Kyuji Fujikawa leaves extended spring outing
MLB.com's Phil Rogers reports that Kyuji Fujikawa (elbow) left his extending spring training appearance Monday with an injury.
Fujikawa was making his first game appearance since Tommy John surgery, but he had to call the trainer to the mound before eventually exiting. It's not clear at this point whether he had a setback with his surgically-repaired elbow or something else. The Cubs should provide an update on his status at some point. Fujikawa had been shooting for a return around midseason.

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said Thursday that Kyuji Fujikawa (elbow) "should be [throwing] off a mound here pretty soon."
Fujikawa is currently limited to flat-ground throwing as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. "I don't want to put any specific date timetables on him, but he should be [throwing] off a mound here pretty soon," Hoyer said. "Any time you have a Tommy John guy, you have concerns about setbacks. It's been a really good process so far. He's really excited about how good he does feel and how well the ball is coming out of his hand." Fujikawa isn't expected back until midseason.

Kyuji Fujikawa played catch Monday for the first time since his Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.
One initial step in the right direction. Fujikawa signed a two-year, $9.5 million free agent contract with the Cubs last winter but was out for good by late May. He'll try to get back to 100 percent health by the middle of 2014. The crafty 33-year-old still has a bright future in MLB.

The hope was that he was dealing with a forearm strain, but it's actually the worst-cast scenario. It's brutal news for the Cubs, who brought Fujikawa on board over the winter on a two-year, $9.5 million contract. The surgery figures to keep him out of action until the early part of the 2014 season.

Kevin Gregg is safe in the closer's role for now, but it's worth noting that Fujikawa has allowed just one hit in four scoreless innings and posted a 6/0 K/BB ratio since coming off the disabled list last week. He's next in line for saves if Gregg falters.

Fujikawa gave up one hit and didn't walk or strike out a batter. He threw 10 out of 16 pitches for strikes. Barring any setbacks, he should rejoin the Cubs' bullpen later this week. He's expected to pitch as a set-up man in front of newly-named closer Kevin Gregg.

Wed May 8 201311:38Fujikawa (forearm) to return as set-up man
Kyuji Fujikawa (forearm) will pitch in a set-up role when he returns from the disabled list.
Fujikawa was the Cubs' closer when he landed on the disabled list last month, but Kevin Gregg has emerged as the club's ninth-inning man during his absence. We still think Fujikawa will get saves chances eventually, but it's probably not a bad idea to ease him back into things and get some success under his belt.

The Japanese right-hander should get the closer role back relatively quickly, which means that Kevin Gregg will move to a set-up role.
