Affeldt was activated from the disabled list last week after missing 50 games with a left groin strain, but he felt renewed groin discomfort during a recent relief appearance. The veteran left-hander wound up posting a 3.74 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 33 2/3 innings this season. He is under contract through 2015.

It's the first time he's done so since landing on the DL over a month ago with a strained groin. Affeldt's next step hasn't been determined yet, but it's reasonable to assume that he could be activated early next month as long as he can avoid a setback.

Jeremy Affeldt is expected to be sidelined 4-6 weeks after being diagnosed with a moderate left groin strain.
It's expected to be closer to six weeks than four. Affeldt revealed that he's been pitching with groin soreness for a couple weeks and had to leave Saturday's appearance after aggravating the injury. The Giants will still have a couple lefties in the pen with Javier Lopez and Jose Mijares, but losing Affeldt is obviously a blow.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said that Jeremy Affeldt will handle most of the eighth inning duties while Santiago Casilla (knee) is sidelined.
Casilla will undergo surgery on his knee Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined until around the All-Star break, so the Giants will have to make due without him for a while. Affeldt, who turns 34 in June, owns 2.35 ERA and 9/8 K/BB ratio in 15 1/3 innings this season. Chad Gaudin and Jean Machi, both right-handers, should also see work in the seventh and eighth innings.

Giants signed LHP Jeremy Affeldt to a three-year, $18 million contract.
The deal was agreed to on Monday, then made official Wednesday after Affeldt passed his pre-signing physical. The 33-year-old left-hander posted a 2.70 ERA in 63 1/3 innings this past season for the World Series-champion Giants. He has a 2.66 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 8.0 K/9 since the beginning of the 2011 campaign.
