Betancourt retired all four batters he faced in Monday's win over the Reds. He picked up his second win of the season when Nolan Arenado hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth.
Betancourt has been better than the Rockies ever could have envisioned this season after having not pitched in the big leagues since August 2013 following Tommy John surgery. The 40-year-old's average fastball velocity is actually up slightly from 2013, and he's contributed a 19:2 K:BB ratio, 3.12 ERA, and 0.75 WHIP over 17.1 innings. John Axford hasn't yet given manager Walt Weiss reason for pulling him from the closer's role, but Betancourt would seem to be next in line for those duties should an opening arise.

Betancourt allowed an unearned run Monday night while pitching the eighth inning against Arizona. John Axford tossed a scoreless ninth to convert the save.
Adam Ottavino is on the 15-day DL with triceps inflammation, leaving Betancourt as the primary setup man for Axford at the present time. If Axford scuffles, Betancourt is the most likely candidate to usurp him for save chance in Colorado while Ottavino is on the shelf. Betancourt has posted an 11:1 K:BB over 9.2 innings for the Rockies this season.

Betancourt allowed a run on a hit and walk while pitching the eighth inning of Tuesday's win over the Giants. Adam Ottavino struck out the side in the ninth to record the save.
Rockies manager Walt Weiss named Ottavino as the team's closer prior to Tuesday's game, which effectively bumps Betancourt back into a setup role after he recorded the save Monday night when Ottavino was unavailable after pitching on consecutive days. LaTroy Hawkins tossed a scoreless sixth inning in the winning effort.

Betancourt threw a perfect ninth inning Monday, striking out two Giants in the process to get the save.
After the game, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said that he wasn't ready to name a full-time closer. "I'm not ready to declare a closer," Weiss said. "We have multiple pieces that have pitched late in games in this league and closed games in this league. It's a nice problem to have." Betancourt will be among those considered by Weiss, as will Adam Ottavino and maybe John Axford once Axford returns from his family medical leave.
Mon Apr 13 201515:18Rafael Betancourt: Will Close In Save Situation Monday
Betancourt will close for the Rockies on Monday if a save situation arises, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
Betancourt closed for the Rockies back in 2012, collecting 31 saves, so the experience factor is certainly there. Manager Walt Weiss did say that the regular closer, LaTroy Hawkins," is merely receiving "a break" from closing, so this move doesn't necessarily represent the team's long-term intentions. If Betancourt performs well, however, he could make it difficult for Weiss to turn back to the 42-year-old.
Wed Apr 1 201521:18Betancourt's (jaw) contract purchased by Rockies on Wednesday
Betancourt's (jaw) contract was purchased by the Rockies on Wednesday, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports.
Betancourt, who was brought on as a non-roster invite, has allowed just one earned run over 8.2 spring innings, striking out 10 total batters over that span. If this success continues during the season's opening weeks, the right-hander could gradually work his way into higher-leverage situations. He's currently dealing with a minor jaw injury, but that clearly hasn't affected his status with the team to begin 2015.

Betancourt left Thursday's spring training with a contusion on the right side of his jaw, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
A contusion is the least of the worries possible, as he didn't display any signs of a concussion. He should be fine barring something more in the next few days as he continues to battle for a spot in the Rockies' bullpen.

Betancourt is one of four pitchers competing for the final spot in the Rockies' bullpen, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.
All three of Betancourt's challengers for the gig (Brooks Brown, Tommy Kahnle, and Jairo Diaz) are at least a decade younger than the 39-year-old right-hander, but all have minor league options remaining, which may work to the veteran's advantage. Betancourt is back to full health after 2013 Tommy John surgery, and appears to have regained sufficient velocity, routinely reaching the low 90s with his fastball this spring. While he won't be a candidate to reclaim the closer role he previously enjoyed during his time withe Rockies if he wins an Opening Day roster spot, Betancourt's longer track record of success in the big leagues might make him a more stable choice than the other competitors.
Fri Jan 30 201519:15Betancourt re-signed with Rockies on minor league deal
Betancourt re-signed with the Rockies on a minor league deal, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
The former Rockies closer returned from Tommy John surgery last season to post a 4.66 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in 22 appearances between rookie-level Grand Junction and Triple-A Colorado Springs. He'll presumably be invited to attend major league camp for spring training, but Betancourt will face an uphill battle to return to the late-inning mix.

Betancourt (elbow) has returned to action at Triple-A Colorado Springs, tossing scoreless innings in his first two appearances.
After a 14-outing rehab assignment with rookie-level Grand Junction, Betancourt has entered the final stage of his comeback from Tommy John surgery last September. He's still in the process of building his arm back up, but Betancourt hasn't seemed to endure any setbacks or diminished effectiveness despite the missed action. Look for him to return to the Rockies at some point in September, where he could immediately be inserted into a high-leverage role in the team's hapless bullpen.

Betancourt has been rehabbing from Tommy John surgery at the Rockies' spring training facility, as him eventually re-signing on a minor league deal was simply a formality. Mon Mar 31 201420:58Betancourt hopes to pitch for Rox this year
Rafael Betancourt (elbow) plans to be at the Rockies' extended spring training until June, at which point he will begin a rehab assignment with their rookie-level Grand Junction club.
Betancourt is coming back from Tommy John surgery and is actually not even under contract with the Rockies, but the two sides appear to have a good-faith agreement. He had the operation last August but is hoping to join the bullpen before the end of the season. "It's weird being here on Opening Day, because I'd normally be playing," said Betancourt. "But I still feel part of the team, and the guys make me feel part of everything. So I'm happy to be here. It's fine."

Mon Mar 10 201418:47Betancourt works out at Rockies' complex
Rafael Betancourt (elbow) will work out at the Rockies' spring training complex for the next 10 days.
Betancourt remains a free agent, but the Rockies have given him permission to work out in their camp. The veteran reliever has professed a desire to pitch for the Rockies and no one else, so he seems likely to wind up back in Denver eventually provided that his rehab from Tommy John surgery goes well. Betancourt will throw 25 times from 90 feet on three occasions before expanding to 125 feet next week.

Sun Jan 19 201409:53'Good chance' Rockies re-sign Betancourt
Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reports that there is a "good chance" the Rockies will re-sign Rafael Betancourt.
Betancourt has said that if he does pitch again it will be for the Rockies, but Cotillo says the two sides are "trying to figure out the timing with his rehab" from Tommy John surgery. The reliever went under the knife in late August but is hoping to contribute at some point during the upcoming season.

Rockies declined Rafael Betancourt's $4.25 million mutual option for the 2014 season.
Betancourt underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in August and will miss the entire 2014 campaign, so the decision to decline his option wasn't a difficult one for the Rockies. Betancourt, 38, hasn't said whether he plans to attempt a comeback in 2015.

Fri Aug 30 201318:51Rafael Betancourt only interested in Rockies
Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that Rafael Betancourt indicated that if he underwent Tommy John surgery, he'd only be interested in returning to the Rockies.
