Rockies signed RHP Billy Buckner to a minor league contract.
Buckner has a 6.25 ERA in 138 1/3 career major league innings, including an 11.08 mark in 13 innings in 2010. He also posted a 6.25 ERA in 80 2/3 Triple-A innings. He's still just 27 but doesn't stand much of a chance to make the opening day roster.
Sun Jul 25 201010:13Tigers release Billy Buckner
Tigers released RHP Billy Buckner.
Buckner was acquired from the Diamondbacks last month in the Dontrelle Willis deal. He held an 11.08 ERA in three starts with the D-backs this season and wasn't much better at Triple-A Toledo after the trade, holding a 9.40 ERA over eight outings. Buckner had been a decent prospect at one time and is still just 26, so he'll catch on somewhere.
Tue Jun 1 201020:59Tigers acquire Billy Buckner from D'Backs
Tigers acquired RHP Billy Buckner from the Diamondbacks for LHP Dontrelle Willis and cash considerations.
They had to pay nearly all of Willis' $12 million contract in order to do it, but Buckner is a decent insurance policy for the starting rotation. The 26-year-old right-hander is 0-3 with an 11.08 ERA over his first three starts with the Diamondbacks this season and has a 6.25 ERA over 36 major league appearances (21 starts). He'll start his career with the Tigers in Triple-A Toledo.
Tue Jun 1 201019:33Report: Tigers acquire Buckner for Willis
Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that the Tigers have acquired right-hander Billy Buckner from the Diamondbacks for left-hander Dontrelle Willis.
And so, the teams ultimately decided to swap disappointing fifth starters. We're not sure how much money the Tigers will kick in, but Buckner is a better alternative than nothing. The 26-year-old right-hander is 0-3 with an 11.08 ERA over his first three starts this season, but showed some promise over his final six starts last season.

Sun May 30 201001:38D'Backs' Buckner lit up by Giants
Billy Buckner was pounded for seven runs in four innings by the Giants on Saturday.
The Diamondbacks can't keep giving chances to Buckner, who has gone 0-3 with an 11.08 ERA since joining the rotation. He belongs in middle relief if he belongs in the majors at all.
Tue May 18 201016:50Buckner to start on Sunday
Billy Buckner will get another start against the Blue Jays on Sunday.
Buckner allowed two runs over five innings in Tuesday's 8-0 loss to the Marlins. He was better over his final six starts last season, but remember that he posted a 6.40 ERA over 16 games (13 starts) overall. He doesn't have a tremendous amount of upside, even in NL-only formats.
