Nick Masset (shoulder) admits that he's had some "small setbacks" in his recovery from shoulder surgery and is "a long ways away" from throwing off a mound.
Masset underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in September and was supposed to be ready to go for spring training, but that's obviously not the case. "In the beginning, it doesn't always go as smooth as silk," he said. "I've had some small setbacks." Masset is currently throwing from 90 feet three days a week and will have to progress to throwing every day before he'll be allowed to throw from the bump.

Nick Masset (shoulder) said Friday that he's about a month away from beginning a throwing program.
The right-hander hopes to be throwing off a mound by the beginning of spring training. Masset missed all of 2012 with a shoulder issue that eventually required arthroscopic surgery. He'll be a big boost to the Reds' bullpen in 2013 if he can show he's healthy, as he pitched quite well for them from 2009-11.

Masset suffered a setback earlier this month, but he resumed throwing bullpen sessions this week. He's hoping to throw a 20-25 pitch live batting practice session on Saturday, which could pave the way for him to begin pitching in Arizona rookie league games next week. Masset threw 40 pitches on Monday and backed off from extra day of throwing on Tuesday, but chalked it up to normal soreness. "It felt good all the way through. The next day, I had a little soreness," said Masset. "When you go through something like this, you have the spot that's hurt, but as you come back and start throwing, there are certain things that are going to pop up in your shoulder -- just tightness." Masset will travel with the team to San Francisco this week in order to continue his throwing program, but could soon head to Arizona to begin facing live hitters. However, there's no timetable for his return.

Reds pitching coach Bryan Price said it's "too early" to talk about a rehab assignment for Nick Masset (shoulder).
Masset threw another bullpen session Tuesday and could mix in breaking balls in a session Thursday. "It's too early," Price said. "There are some things that have to go on, as far as my opinion as part of the protocol. He's got to throw more bullpens. He needs to face some hitters live, either in a batting practice situation or simulated game type situation. And then start to think about how to lay out his innings plan before his rehab throwing program."

He's now been throwing for about a week and is throwing between 60-70 times during the sessions. While there's no timetable for him to throw off a mound, it can't be too far in the future.
