Colorado Rockies pitcher Yohan Flande will start Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs, according to MLB.com. Flande started 12 games in the minor leagues earlier this season but will be making his first start for the Rockies, as the entirety of his 9.2 innings have come from out of the bullpen.

Flande was exceptional in long relief Tuesday against the Angels, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings and conceding only two hits and a walk in the 10-2 loss.

Flande had the unenviable task of mopping up for starter Chad Bettis in the third inning, with the Rockies already facing a 10-run deficit. It's a credit to Flande that he prevented the bleeding from getting worse, but his success may have been due in part to a lack of scouting on the Angels' part more than anything. Tuesday's outing aside, Flande has been brutal in his five relief appearances with the Rockies this season, supplying a 4.73 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 6:4 K:BB ratio over 13.1 innings.

Flande was officially recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

With Christian Bergman (shoulder) landing on the disabled list, the Rockies will be forced to turn back to Flande to fill a long-relief role. Flande gave up six runs on 11 hits over 7.1 innings in his prior stint with the big club back in May, and he hasn't been any better in six starts for Albuquerque (7.11 ERA, 1.96 WHIP).

Flande has joined the Rockies in Oakland, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

The Rockies have yet to officially add Flande to the active roster, but it sounds like they will with John Axford deactivated for undisclosed reasons. Expect Flande, who has struggled both in the majors (7.36 ERA) and at Triple-A Albuquerque (7.11 ERA) this season, to be used primarily in mop-up duty.

Flande was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports.

With Chris Rusin called up to replace Jorge De La Rosa (hand) as Tuesday's starter, Flande will be the roster casualty. It's not much of a loss for the Rockies, with Flande sporting a 7.36 ERA and 3:3 K:BB ratio through 7.1 innings this season, following a shaky 2014 campaign.

Flande was lit up for four runs on six hits over his two relief innings during Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Giants.

After dominating in his six starts at Double-A New Britain, Flande was expected to give the Rockies a serviceable option out of the bullpen upon being called up, but that just hasn't materialized. He owns a 7.36 ERA and 3:3 K:BB ratio over three appearances spanning 7.1 innings.

Flande was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday.

Flande failed to make the Rockies' roster out of camp, but holds an impressive 1.36 ERA and 0.791 WHIP through six starts with Double-A New Britain this season. He'll likely provide the Rockies with another left-handed option out of the bullpen.

Flande worked primarily as a starter at the Triple-A level and with the Rockies last season, and didn't excel at either stop. The 5.19 ERA and 1.20 WHIP he posted over 16 appearances with the big club probably compromised any chance he had at winning a starting gig out of spring training, but it wouldn't be surprise if he saw action out of the Rockies' bullpen at some point later this season. Manager Walt Weiss confirmed that Flande would pitch exclusively in relief in the minors, where he could potentially develop into a tough LOOGY. For all his horrid surface numbers, Flande was devastating against left-handers during his stint with the big club, holding such hitters to a minuscule .154/.235/.246 batting line.

Flande cleared waivers Friday and was assigned to Triple-A Albuquerque. He did receive an invite to Rockies' spring training, however.

Flande was designated for assignment by the Rockies on Wednesday to make room for Kyle Kendrick on the 40-man roster. He will still receive the opportunity to nab a bullpen spot out of spring training, but losing a spot on the 40-man could make it tougher to do so.

Flande falls to 0-6 for the Rockies in 16 appearances as a starter and reliever. The left-hander finishes 2014 with an ugly 5.19 ERA, but some promising peripherals that suggest bad luck, like a 1.20 WHIP and 3.73 xFIP.

Flande allowed two runs on two hits and a walk over five innings Thursday against Arizona, striking out two in the no-decision.

The Rockies ended up falling behind thanks to some poor relief work following Flande's removal after just 59 pitches -- not that that's a surprising move, as it was his first MLB start in more than a month. Flande is slated to make his next start Tuesday in San Diego, and may also draw a start on the season's final day in Los Angeles, so he's a sneaky pickup for the season's final week.

Flande will replace Franklin Morales in the rotation for his final two scheduled starts of the season, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports.

Flande, who has worked out of the bullpen for the Rockies since rejoining the team September, will take the ball Thursday against the Diamondbacks and make his final turn Sept. 23 against the Padres. The lefty has a 5.04 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 50 innings with the Rockies, and is still searching for the first big-league win of his career.

Flande was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Monday.

Flande will presumably assume a long-relief role upon his return to the big club, after posting a 5.52 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in nine appearances (eight starts) earlier in the year. He was even worse at Colorado Springs, with a 5.60 ERA and 1.65 WHIP over 88.1 innings. The fact that Flande made eight starts for the Rockies this season speaks volumes to their utter lack of quality pitching options.

Flande's most recent tenure in the rotation was largely forgettable, as he gave up 10 runs while fanning nine over 17.1 innings, and he'll now head to Colorado Springs to bide his time. It's uncertain who will take Flande's next turn, but the team could opt for Franklin Morales or just use the off days to skip his spot.

Flande gave up four runs and struck out six batters over 5.1 innings in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader with the Reds, but didn't factor into the decision in the 10-5 victory.

Flande exited the game with the Rockies trailing 4-1, but avoided the loss after the team was able to rally for eight runs over the final three innings. The lefty is 0-5 with a 5.52 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 45.2 innings, making it difficult to extract value from him even in NL-only leagues.

Flande pitched six quality innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two batters before picking up his fifth loss (0-5) of the year in Tuesday's game against the Padres.

Despite the quality start Tuesday, Flande has done nothing in his eight starts with the Rockies to get excited about. Flande has tossed just two quality starts and possesses an unsightly 5.36 ERA and ugly 20:11 K:BB ratio in 40.1 innings pitched. He will make his next start Sunday at home against Cincinnati.

Flande's season record dropped to 0-4 following Thursday's loss to the Cubs, as the lefty surrendered four runs on seven hits (two homers) over six innings.

Flande's 5.77 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over seven outings (six starts) for the Rockies this season would likely have resulted in a demotion for most other teams, but the organization has few other alternatives to turn to. Following Brett Anderson's placement on the disabled list earlier this week, Flande might have actually strengthened his grip on a rotation spot, in spite of his discouraging turn Thursday.

The Rockies bumped Flande to the bullpen last week, but he'll slot back into the rotation Thursday in place of Franklin Morales. Flande has struggled in his six appearances (five starts) with the big club this season, but he's been especially bad at home, giving up 13 runs on 20 hits in just 14.2 innings.
