CBS Sports' Jon Heyman believes Jose Valverde will make the Mets.
Coming off a rough 5.59 ERA over 20 appearances with the Tigers last season, Valverde inked a minor league contract with the Mets last month. Papa Grande will receive a $1 million salary if he makes the team.

Tue Mar 11 201417:13Jose Valverde gives up two runs
Jose Valverde surrendered two runs and three hits in his inning Tuesday versus the Cardinals.
ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin penciled Valverde into the pen in his updated Mets roster projection today, but there's still a ways to go before there will be a final decision on his status. He's now allowed three runs in four innings this spring.

Tue Dec 17 201311:33Valverde has not signed contract with Snakes
Updating a previous report, Jose Valverde has not signed a contract with the Diamondbacks.
Valverde denied CBS Sports' Jon Heyman's report that he had inked a minor league deal in a conversation with Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes. Valverde recently switched agents from Scott Boras to Praver/Shapiro. The 35-year-old registered a 5.59 ERA over 19 1/3 innings with Detroit in 2013 before the Tigers designated him for assignment.

Tue Dec 17 201309:23Report: Arizona inks Valverde to minors deal
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Jose Valverde has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks.
Papa Grande's career has derailed over the past two seasons, as he's posted a 4.18 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 67/33 K/BB ratio over 88 1/3 innings. Things really bottomed out in 2013, when the 35-year-old posted a 5.59 ERA over 19 1/3 innings with Detroit. Valverde isn't likely to ever see the ninth inning in Arizona, as the Snakes have a host of pitchers that include Addison Reed, J.J. Putz, David Hernandez and Brad Ziegler ahead of him in the bullpen hierarchy.

Wed Aug 7 201314:24Tigers release reliever Jose Valverde
Tigers released RHP Jose Valverde.
Valverde accepted a minor league assignment after being designated for assignment in June, but the Tigers are ready to move on. The 35-year-old posted a 5.59 ERA, nine saves and a 19/6 K/BB ratio over 19 1/3 innings with Detroit this season. His days of fantasy relevancy are long gone.

Thu Jun 27 201316:57Jose Valverde accepts assignment to Triple-A
Tigers sent RHP Jose Valverde outright to Triple-A Toledo.
Not surprisingly, Valverde passed through waivers after being designated for assignment last Friday. He has accepted the assignment to Triple-A and will attempt to keep his career alive, but his days of fantasy relevancy are almost certainly over.

Fri Jun 21 201315:37Tigers designate Jose Valverde for assignment
Tigers designated RHP Jose Valverde for assignment.
Valverde pitched well initially after being called up by the Tigers in late April, but it came crashing down of late, as he blew two of five save chances while posting a 13.50 ERA over his last eight appearances. He should be able to catch on elsewhere, but his days as a closer anywhere are surely over. Joaquin Benoit has taken over as the Tigers' closer.

Wed Jun 19 201316:45Jose Valverde lit up in blowout
Mopping up against the Orioles, Jose Valverde gave up four runs and five hits in the ninth Wednesday.
The Tigers were already down 9-3, so Valverde's showing didn't hurt the team. It did, however, demonstrate once again why he's a really hard guy to trust. When Chris Davis took him deep today, it upped his total to six homers allowed in 19 1/3 innings.

Fri Jun 14 201318:07Leyland sticking with Valverde for now
Tigers manager Jim Leyland indicated Friday that he's not ready to remove Jose Valverde from the closer role.
"We're going to use Jose Valverde until we decide Jose Valverde can or can't do it or we've got somebody else better," said Leyland. It's not exactly a vote of confidence, but it sounds like they will stick with him for now. The 35-year-old has a 4.15 ERA, three blown saves and five homers allowed in just 18 appearances this season. It would be surprising if he didn't eventually lose the closer gig.

Wed Jun 12 201317:38Jose Valverde takes third blown save
After coming in with a man on first, Jose Valverde gave up a two-run homer to Lorenzo Cain to take a blown save on Wednesday.
Manager Jim Leyland left Drew Smyly in to face fellow left-hander Eric Hosmer to start the ninth in a 2-0 game, even though Hosmer has hit lefties better than righties this year. The strategy backfired when Hosmer singled, and Valverde went on to give up his 15th homer in 17 1/3 innings this year. That's two more than he allowed in 69 innings in the regular season last year. Valverde is still an acceptable 9-for-12 saving games for the Tigers, but he doesn't look like any sort of long-term fix. We'd be surprised if he finishes the season on Detroit's roster.

Tue Jun 11 201323:35Valverde closes out Royals to earn ninth save
Jose Valverde worked a scoreless ninth inning against the Royals to pick up his ninth save of the season on Tuesday.
Valverde is still a high-wire act, as the Royals had a runner on second base with nobody out before he escaped without harm. Despite his uneasiness, he's earned nine saves in 11 chances and is still getting the call from Tigers manager Jim Leyland. The right-hander has struck out 16 batters in 16 2/3 innings this season.

Sat Jun 8 201319:56Valverde earns eighth save, Tigers top Tribe
Jose Valverde tallied his eighth save of 2013 in the Tigers' 6-4 win over Cleveland on Saturday.
Valverde allowed a one-out single to Indians slugger Carlos Santana and then walked Yan Gomes, but he worked out of that jam by netting back-to-back strikeouts from Ryan Raburn and Mike Aviles. Valverde has a rough 4.02 ERA in 15 2/3 frames this season but he is locked into the Tigers' ninth-inning role for the time being.

Fri Jun 7 201322:22Valverde surrenders pair of homers vs. Tribe
Jose Valverde, coming on in a non-save situation, allowed a pair of solo home runs against the Indians on Friday.
He also allowed a single to Jason Kipnis, and nearly blew the four-run lead that he was tasked with protecting. While he started off the season strong, he's now allowed six runs (four home runs) in his last 2 2/3 innings. With the Tigers expecting to compete for a World Series, you have to wonder how long they'll trust Valverde with the ball in the ninth inning.

Fri May 31 201323:14Jose Valverde implodes in loss to Orioles
Jose Valverde gave up four runs for his second blown save of the season in Friday's loss to the Orioles.
Valverde entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a 5-3 cushion, but gave up a leadoff homer to Nick Markakis and back-to-back singles to Adam Jones and Chris Davis. He was able to retire Matt Wieters and J.J. Hardy on pop-ups, but Chris Dickerson then connected for a walk-off three-run homer to win it for Baltimore. Valverde entered Friday's outing having allowed just one run on three hits and four walks over his first 12 innings this season, so there's no reason for panic quite yet. But the honeymoon might be over.

Mon May 27 201316:37Valverde gets sixth save, Tigers beat Pirates
Jose Valverde earned his sixth save of the season Monday in the Tigers' 6-5 defeat of the Pirates.
Valverde allowed a one-out single to Travis Snider but retired the next two batters, finishing off the Tigers' Memorial Day victory in Detroit with a strikeout of Pirates star Andrew McCutchen. Valverde has a gorgeous 0.75 ERA and 0.58 WHIP in 12 innings this season. Maybe there really is something left in the tank.

Fri May 24 201300:50Valverde works perfect frame, earns 5th save
Jose Valverde worked a scoreless ninth inning against the Twins on Thursday, striking out two and earning his fifth save of the season.
Papa Grande -- unwanted by 30 teams a month and a half ago -- has been lethal out of the back end of Detroit's bullpen. Through 11 innings, he has a 0.82 ERA, 0.55 WHIP and 10/4 K/BB rate. He's only given up two hits and one run.

Fri May 17 201323:21Valverde shuts down Rangers to earn 4th save
Jose Valverde shut the Rangers down in the ninth inning on Friday, preserving a one-run lead and earning his fourth save of the season.
He did surrender a one-out walk, but was able to avoid further damage. It was a nice bounceback effort for the veteran closer, as he blew his first save of the season in his last opportunity against the Indians on Sunday. Despite missing all of spring training, he has looked relatively sharp in the early going, converting four of his five save chances while compiling a 1.13 ERA and 0.62 WHIP.

Tue May 14 201322:53Valverde bounces back with scoreless inning
Jose Valverde rebounded from his first blown save of the season to pitch a scoreless ninth inning against the Astros on Tuesday.
It wasn't a save situation and it was against the Astros, after all, but it was still a positive sign for the right-hander. He struck out two in the outing, his first since blowing the save against the Indians on Sunday. He's still the Tigers closer going forward.
