Sun Jan 19 201411:19Nationals interested in Grant Balfour
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Nationals are interested in Grant Balfour.
The Nationals already have three relievers with closing experience, and Balfour would give them a fourth. However, Rosenthal notes that they want to trade Drew Storen and don't want Rafael Soriano to trigger his $14 million option for 2015 by finishing 62 games this season. Signing Balfour would give the Nats protection for Soriano and a potential closer option for 2015, assuming he signs a multi-year deal. Obviously, it would not be an ideal landing spot for Balfour's 2014 fantasy prospects.

Mon Jan 13 201411:27O's canceled Balfour deal due to knee, wrist
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Orioles balked at signing Grant Balfour because of knee and wrist issues.
It was largely assumed that the deal fell apart because of a shoulder concern. Balfour agreed to a two-year, $15 million free agent contract with the Orioles on December 17 but the veteran right-hander then failed his pre-signing physical exam a couple days later. He is still on the open market.

Mon Dec 23 201321:06Giants show interest in Grant Balfour
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Giants have had conversations with Grant Balfour.
However, Schulman adds that the odds of them signing Balfour are "meh," which is no surprise since they don't have a closer job available. Balfour's contract with the Orioles fell apart, but he should be able to land a ninth inning gig somewhere before long.

Sun Dec 22 201312:09Balfour has 'at least one offer on the table'
Grant Balfour told Jim Duquette of SiriusXM Radio Sunday that four teams have expressed interest in him and he has "at least one offer on the table."
Balfour also added that, to his knowledge, all four clubs would want him as their closer. It's not clear who the offer came from, but Jim Bowden of ESPN and SiriusXM Radio reported Friday that the Rays are interested in the reliever. Balfour's two-year deal with the Orioles fell apart due to concerns about his shoulder, but he's since been given a clean bill of health by two different doctors.

Fri Dec 20 201320:42Rays in on Balfour after deal with O's nixed
The Rays are in on Grant Balfour, sources tell Jim Bowden of ESPN and SiriusXM Radio.
Balfour seemed to be off the market after he came to a two-year, $15 million agreement with the Orioles, but some concerns about his physical caused the Orioles to nix the deal at the last minute. The Rays are in the market for a closer after losing Fernando Rodney to free agency, so it's not surprising that they'd have renewed interest in the soon-to-be 36-year-old. It's unclear what the Orioles' concerns will do to Balfour's price tag, as the Rays are notoriously thrifty when it comes to free agent signings.

Fri Dec 20 201317:59Grant Balfour considering filing grievance
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Grant Balfour will discuss with the player's union whether to file a grievance following his contract fallout with the Orioles.
The O's pulled Balfour's two-year, $15 million offer due to concerns about his shoulder, but the reliever has since been given a clean bill of health by two doctors. However, since Balfour never signed anything, he probably doesn't have much of a case. That doesn't mean he didn't get a raw deal here.

Fri Dec 20 201317:11Grant Balfour says he's '100 percent fine'
Grant Balfour told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle after the Orioles pulled their two-year offer that he's "100 percent fine" physically.
The O's called off the $15 million deal due to concerns about Balfour's right shoulder, but the reliever said MRIs on the shoulder look the same now as they did three years ago. "I'm the All-Star pitcher I was last season," Balfour said. "My shoulder is fine, everything is fine. I'm ready to come out there in the ninth inning, do what I do." Baltimore is known for putting players through extremely extensive physicals prior to signing them, so this could be a case of them being overly cautious. Still, it might wind up costing Balfour a decent chunk of change.

Fri Dec 20 201315:08O's call off two-year deal with Grant Balfour
Orioles executive VP of baseball operations Dan Duquette announced Friday that the club has called off its two-year, $15 million deal with Grant Balfour.
Duquette noted that he's "disappointed" something couldn't be worked out, but the O's weren't satisfied with how Balfour's shoulder looked during his physical and will "turn (their) attention elsewhere." Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reported previously that Fernando Rodney is next on the Orioles' wish list. It will be interesting to see what kind of deal Balfour gets now given the injury red flag.

Thu Dec 19 201320:54Orioles concerned about Balfour's shoulder
Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles' concerns over Grant Balfour's physical have to do with his right shoulder.
Balfour had surgery in September of 2005 to repair his labrum and rotator cuff but hasn't had any issues with his shoulder since. Evidently, though, the Orioles' doctors saw something they didn't like. Both Connolly and Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com have reported that there's a real chance Balfour's two-year, $15 million contract will fall apart. A resolution is expected to come Friday.

Thu Dec 19 201319:15Balfour's deal with O's could fall through
Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports that Grant Balfour's two-year deal with the Orioles is in "serious jeopardy" due to issues with his physical that "need to be resolved."
There's no word on what the physical issue is. Kubatko says the two-year, $15 million deal was supposed to be officially announced on Thursday, but it's now "very possible" it will fall through. He expects a resolution to come sometime on Friday. It's possible the O's could re-work the deal in order to protect themselves, or they might have to find another closer.

Tue Dec 17 201314:04Report: O's give Balfour 2-years, $14MM
Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports that Grant Balfour will sign a 2-year, $14 million contract with the Orioles.
Half a million dollars will be deferred in each season. Balfour reportedly had a better offer on the table but spurned it to join what he considered to be a better situation. Baltimore ended up doing pretty well in its nifty game of closer arbitrage this offseason. First, it dumped Jim Johnson and the eight-figures it would have been forced to pay him on the A's for Jemile Weeks. Then, with the savings, the O's were able to sign both Balfour and setup man Ryan Webb (two-years, $4.5 million).

Tue Dec 17 201313:46O's and Balfour close on two-year contract
The Orioles and Grant Balfour are close to agreeing on a two-year contract, reports Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.
Baltimore and Balfour have been flirting with one another all month and they finally decided to consummate. The Orioles, in essence, have traded closers with the A's after shipping Jim Johnson to the A's for Jemile Weeks earlier this winter. Balfour was hoping for a three-year deal, but it apparently didn't materialize. This is a nice landing spot for the 35-year-old right-hander's fantasy value.

Mon Dec 16 201319:47O's considering vesting option for Balfour
Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports that the Orioles "might" offer Grant Balfour a vesting option for a third season.
If they do, that could get it done. The Orioles appear to have identified Balfour as their top option to replace Jim Johnson and have extended him a two-year offer. Balfour was originally wanting a three-year deal with a vesting option for a fourth year, but the two sides might be able to meet in the middle.

Sun Dec 15 201317:52Mariners could still be in play for Balfour
According to Jen Royle of the Boston Herald, the Mariners could be in the mix to land Grant Balfour if he doesn't accept the current deal on the table from the Orioles.
The three-year offer from the O's is believed to be for around $7 million annually, while Balfour is seeking $8 million per season and a vesting option for a fourth year. The Mariners have a gaping hole at the back of their bullpen right now, and have shown a willingness to spend this offseason, so don't be surprised if they swoop in and end up with the 35-year-old right-hander.

Sun Dec 15 201316:39Orioles offer Grant Balfour three-year deal
Jen Royle of the Boston Herald reports that the Orioles have offered Grant Balfour a three-year deal that he is mulling over.
The O's didn't want to extend their offer beyond two years. To add the third season, they lowered the average annual value of the contract, while increasing the incentives that Balfour could earn. It's clear at this point that he is their top target on the free agent market.

Fri Dec 13 201320:10O's unlikely to go third year for Balfour
Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles are holding firm with their two-year offer to Grant Balfour and are willing to explore other closing options.
A third year seems to be the sticking point of the deal between the two sides at this juncture. The O's have also expressed interest in John Axford, who could become their primary target if they are unable to work out a deal with Balfour.

Thu Dec 12 201312:44Report: O's 'confident' of signing Balfour
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles are "confident" of signing closer Grant Balfour.
Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that the Orioles want to give him two years while Balfour would prefer three. Meanwhile, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com hears that it's doubtful an agreement will be worked out on Thursday. The 35-year-old is coming off a 2.59 ERA and 38 saves this past season in Oakland and would replace Jim Johnson as Baltimore's closer.

Wed Dec 11 201320:12Orioles have made two-year offer to Balfour
Grant Balfour has received a two-year contract offer from the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASN confirms.
The Orioles are in need of a closer, as they traded away former closer Jim Johnson to Balfour's former team, the Athletics, earlier this offseason. It would be an interesting closer swap if they then signed the 35-year-old Balfour. The right-hander had 38 saves and a 2.59 ERA in 2013.

Tue Dec 10 201310:07Orioles interested in closer Grant Balfour
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles are definitely in on Grant Balfour and are trying to get a deal done.
Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio said in an interview with MASNSports.com on Monday night that the Orioles were the favorites to land him. It's interesting, as the Orioles just traded Jim Johnson to the Athletics last week in what was considered a salary dump. Balfour, the A's closer this past season, might end up signing at a similar salary to what Johnson would have cost the Orioles.

Mon Dec 9 201315:07Indians have talked to closer Grant Balfour
The Indians have talked to free agent closer Grant Balfour, reports Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.
Cleveland recently parted ways with closer Chris Perez and will likely bring in a new ninth-inning man for the 2014 season. Balfour has also been drawing interest from the Mariners, Tigers, Yankees, Rockies, Angels and Rays. He registered a 2.59 ERA and 72/27 K/BB ratio in 62 2/3 innings this past season for the Athletics.
