Sardinha inked a minor league contract earlier this month but was revealed to have lingering medical problems when he arrived at spring camp. The O's are likely to make a move soon to ensure they have enough catching depth.

Sardinha, 32, batted just .219 with a .669 OPS in 43 plate appearances last season for the Phillies. But he's always been a pretty solid defender and will operate as organizational catching depth in 2012 for the Orioles.

Sardinha was hitting just .105 in 38 at-bats at Triple-A, but the Phillies wanted someone with some experience around as insurance with Carlos Ruiz banged up. Ruiz isn't expected to require a disabled list stint, so it could be a short stay for the 32-year-old.

Dane Sardinha went 2-for-4 with a solo homer against the Pirates on Sunday.
Sardinha now has hit in all seven of his starts in the majors this season. Included in that hit-streak is three homers, so Sardinha is doing a nice job helping to fill in for the injured Carlos Ruiz. Sardinha doesn't have much of a track record of success in the minors, but he's worth a flier in two-catcher NL-only leagues while Ruiz is out.

Dane Sardinha hit his first major league home run Thursday in the victory over the Indians.
We'll throw Sardinha a bone here: this is the first time we've ever had reason to remark on his performance. The 2000 second-round pick debuted with the Reds in 2003, but he entered the day with just 80 major league at-bats to his credit. His homer came in his first appearance with the Phillies since he was called up to replace the injury Carlos Ruiz.
