ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Aaron Judge went from being a late scratch to hitting a tiebreaking single in a two-run 10th inning to help the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays for the second straight day, 3-1 on Wednesday night. Judge was taken out of the lineup about 30 minutes before the scheduled first pitch. Although no announcement was made about why, the All-Star right fielder struck out in the fifth pinch-hitting for Estevan Florial. Judge returned to the team Tuesday after going on the COVID-19 injured list July 16. New York also had a big night off the field. The Yankees reached a deal to get All-Star slugger Joey Gallo from the Texas Rangers, a person familiar with the trade told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the move had not yet been announced and was subject to approval of medical records of the players involved. Greg Allen was hit by a pitch from Pete Fairbanks (3-4) leading off the 10th, putting runners on first and second. Judge... [More]
Thu Jul 29 202100:07Jorge Lopez Hit Hard In Wednesday StartJorge LópezRPOrioles
Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Jorge Lopez lasted just 2 innings in Wednesday's 8-7 win over the Marlins. Lopez allowed five runs on seven hits (including a two-run home run) and two walks with two strikeouts. The 28-year-old has had a poor season, going 2-12 with a 6.19 ERA through 21 starts. His next start will be a tough one at the Yankees, but fantasy managers should avoid him regardless of matchup.

Wed Jul 28 202123:10Yusei Kikuchi Takes Loss WednesdayYusei KikuchiRP/SPBlue Jays
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Yusei Kikuchi took his sixth loss of the year Wednesday, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks in five innings against the Houston Astros. He struck out seven batters Kikuchi was the victim of a tight strike zone as well as an error by shortstop J.P. Crawford which served to elevate his pitch count and perhaps end his outing more quickly than fantasy managers would have preferred. Kikuchi now has a 4.01 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 124 strikeouts in 114 1/3 innings and remains a reliable fantasy option in all formats.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Franmil Reyes homered twice, the first a second-inning blast that bounced out of Progressive Field and almost dinged a bicyclist pedaling on a street, and the Cleveland Indians beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-2 on Wednesday. Reyes’ leadoff homer in the second glanced off the pedestrian bridge in left field and landed on the plaza area between the ballpark and Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. The ball traveled an estimated 446 feet. Reyes wasn’t done. He finished off Cleveland’s three-homer inning in the third with his 19th of the season, a 421-foot drive to center. César Hernández and José Ramírez also homered in the inning for Cleveland. Kwang Hyun Kim (6-6) gave up all four homers and lost for the first time since June 20. Wed Jul 28 202119:27Ryan Jeffers Homers Twice, Tallies Career-High Six RBIRyan JeffersCTwins
Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers had the most productive day of his career at the plate in Wednesday's loss to the Tigers. Jeffers clubbed a grand slam in the fourth inning, then followed it up with a two-run shot in the eighth, both homers registering exit velocities of 100 MPH or greater. The 24-year-old backstop could draw several more starts in the coming days with Mitch Garver (hand) banged up after being hit by a pitch. Jeffers has been a streaky hitter this season but has solid upside when he's on at the dish, as evidenced by a June stretch where he swatted five homers in 15 games.

Wed Jul 28 202115:06Trevor Story Trade Market Is Heating UpTrevor Story2BRed Sox
Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story's trade market has become much more active over the last 24 hours according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network. The New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants are among the interested clubs, Morosi added. Both clubs make sense as a potential landing spot for the 28-year-old shortstop. He's been underwhelming this season as far as his rate stats are concerned with a .240/.311/.422 batting line but he's added 12 home runs, 46 RBI, 17 stolen bases, and 47 runs scored over 325 at-bats. Story would be leaving the friendly confines of Coors Field but would see much better protection while hitting in the middle of a contending lineup. This won't be the last update we get on Story ahead of Friday's trade deadline.

Wed Jul 28 202113:12Xander Bogaerts Sitting Out Game 1 Of DoubleheaderXander BogaertsSSRed Sox
Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) is not in the starting lineup for Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Blue Jays. Bogaerts was held out of Monday's lineup with a wrist issue, and was not in the lineup Tuesday prior to the postponement of that game. Manager Alex Cora said on Tuesday that the injury was nothing serious and that he expected Bogaerts to return to the lineup on Wednesday. It's possible that Bogaerts will get the start in Game 2 of this doubleheader, but managers should keep an eye out for further updates on his condition. In the meantime, Kike Hernandez is getting the start at shortstop again and will lead off against Toronto.

Wed Jul 28 202110:23Rough Fifth Inning Dooms James Kaprielian Versus PadresJames KaprielianSPAthletics
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian turned in his worst outing of the season on Tuesday as he allowed a season-high six runs across 4 2/3 innings at San Diego. Kaprielian cruised through three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth when the newest Padre Adam Frazier got on base prior to a monstrous homer from Fernando Tatis Jr. The wheels came off in the fifth for Kaprielian as he could not escape the inning, marking only the second time in 13 starts the 27-year-old failed to complete five frames in a start. This one stung, but Kaprielian has been good for fantasy managers this season with a 5-4 record, 3.24 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 79 strikeouts in 72 innings. He'll look to rebound in a good matchup with the Angels on Sunday.

Wed Jul 28 202109:39Brad Keller Delivers Quality Start On His 26th BirthdayBrad KellerRP/SPRoyals
Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Brad Keller celebrated his 26th birthday on Tuesday with a strong outing against the Chicago White Sox. He pitched seven innings and allowed four hits, two walks and one earned run while striking out four. Unfortunately, the Royals' bullpen crumbled and Keller wound up with a no decision on the day. Keller has been coasting through June. He's posted quality starts in each of his four outings this month and has a 2.28 ERA through those four starts. He's a worthy streaming option in deep leagues at this point. He'll make his next start on Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

SEATTLE (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates indeed traded left-hander Tyler Anderson on Tuesday to a playoff contender — the Seattle Mariners, not the Philadelphia Phillies. Earlier in the day, reports circulated the Pirates were close to sending the 31-year-old Anderson to the Phils. Instead, he wound up on the other coast, when the Mariners made their second trade of the day that involved pitching. Seattle sent a pair of minor leaguers, catcher Carter Bins and righty Joaquin Tejada, to the Pirates. Anderson is 5-8 with a 4.35 ERA in 18 starts. “We see Tyler as a solid addition to our club,” Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said. “He brings much needed depth to our rotation as we enter the final third of our schedule.” Hours before that, the Mariners traded Kendall Graveman, one of the best relievers in the majors this season, and pitcher Rafael Montero to AL West-leading Houston for infielder Abraham Toro and reliever Joe Smith. It seemed to be a puzzling move — Seattle trailed Oakland... [More]

The Seattle Mariners have acquired left-hander Tyler Anderson from Pittsburgh, a person familiar with the trade told The Associated Press, in their second deal Tuesday that involves pitching. The person spoke to the AP on condition on anonymity because there was no official announcement. Earlier in the day, reports circulated the Pirates were close to trading Anderson to Philadelphia. But the veteran 31-year-old wound up going to the other coast in a trade for prospects, joining a team in contention for an AL wild-card spot. Anderson is 5-8 with a 4.35 ERA in 18 starts. Hours earlier, the Mariners traded Kendall Graveman, one of the best relievers in the majors this season, and pitcher Rafael Montero to AL West-leading Houston for infielder Abraham Toro and reliever Joe Smith. It seemed to be a puzzling move — Seattle trailed Oakland by one game in the race for the second wild-card spot, and was within striking distance of the Astros. “It’s part of a context that’s going to be an ongoing... St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Harrison Bader had an excellent game on Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two doubles. He scored twice and drove in one run as well. Bader has always been excellent on defense, but he's figured out how to hit the ball this season and could be developing into the newest Cardinals superstar. Bader is hitting .301 with a .916 OPS and needs to be rostered and started in all formats at this point.
