Perez announced his retirement Wednesday, Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com reports.

Perez, who had been working out at the Orioles' facility in Florida while serving a second drug-related suspension, most recently pitched for the organization's Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk earlier this season. The 30-year-old appeared in games for the Cardinals, Indians and Dodgers during his seven-year major league career, posting a lifetime 3.51 ERA with 133 saves in 393 appearances. He'll be best-remembered for his time in Cleveland, where he was a two-time All-Star and posted a cumulative 2.84 ERA over 180.1 innings from 2010-12.

Perez (suspension) was signed by the Orioles on Thursday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.

Perez, who opted out of a minor league deal with Milwaukee earlier this season, was suspended 50 games last month after testing positive for a "drug of abuse." He must serve the suspension before appearing in a game for the Orioles organization. Once the suspension is served, Perez will likely be assigned to Triple-A or another minor league affiliate.

It's highly unlikely he'll return to a closer role he had with the Indians, leaving his value minimal in most leagues even if he does crack a big league roster.

Perez is taking his physical on Monday morning in Los Angeles. The 28-year-old right-hander has been a closer for the large majority of his career, boasting 132 major league saves, but he'll be more of a middle relief arm for the Dodgers behind closer Kenley Jansen and primary setup man Brian Wilson.

A source told Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times that the Dodgers and Chris Perez are close to a one-year deal.

It looks like Perez will take the guaranteed money rather than hoping that a team like the Astros or Orioles will step up with an offer that would keep him in the closer's role. On the Dodgers, he'll certainly be behind Kenley Jansen and Brian Wilson in line for saves, and he's probably a worse bet than Chris Withrow.

Despite their deal with Grant Balfour falling through, MASN's Roch Kubatko says the Orioles aren't interested in Chris Perez for the team's closer role.

Kubatko also said the O's are likely to pursue Fernando Rodney or just find an in-house candidate to fill the position. Perez hasn't drawn a ton of interest this offseason after being cut loose by the Indians. The right-hander might have to settle for a middle relief job -- complete with a middle relief salary -- and hope to re-establish some value.

Some of the teams talking to Chris Perez are discussing him in a role other than closer, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer hears.

Perez has primarily served as closer in his six-year career, registering at least 23 saves in each of the last four seasons. But the 28-year-old struggled to a 4.33 ERA last season and was outright released by the Indians following the season. The Mets and Orioles are two teams who have been linked to Perez in recent days.
