Fri Aug 29 201414:50The Bengals have released Green-Ellis (hip)
The Bengals have released Green-Ellis (hip), the team's official site reports.
The move was largely predictable, after the Bengals drafted fellow running back Jeremy Hill in May's NFL draft. Green-Ellis, who has been dealing with hip pointer, figures to catch on elsewhere assuming his health and depending on where he lands, it's conceivable that he can reclaim some fantasy utility in deeper formats, especially in the event that he finds himself in his new team's short-yardage mix.

Green-Ellis (hip) did not play in Sunday's preseason game at Arizona.
Cincinnati is high on power rookie Jeremy Hill, who had 12 carries for 48 yards Sunday. If Green-Ellis' hip injury continues to linger, it might give the Bengals incentive to cut him. That hasn't been discussed much though, so it's purely speculation at this point. Whether Green-Ellis makes the roster or not is somewhat irrelevant, as his role appears to be severely diminished.
Fri Aug 22 201415:23Green-Ellis missed practice Friday with hip issue
Green-Ellis missed practice Friday with a hip issue, the Bengals' official site reports.
At this stage, there is nothing to suggest that Green-Ellis' hip injury is a major concern, but it is something that clouds his availability for Sunday's preseason contest against the Cardinals.
Fri Aug 22 201414:11BenJarvus Green-Ellis: (Undisclosed) Not Practicing Friday
Green-Ellis (unspecified issue) did not practice Friday, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
At this stage, Green-Ellis' status for Sunday's preseason game against the Cardinals is uncertain, but if he is forced to sit out the contest, Jeremy Hill figures to see added work behind starter Giovani Bernard, with Cedric Peerman and James Wilder representing the team's other current healthy backfield options.

Though he worked ahead of Jeremy Hill (shoulder) in Saturday's preseason game against the Jets, Green-Ellis finished his night with just three yards on one carry.
Hill served as the No. 2 running back in Cincy's preseason opener, but Green-Ellis was first into the game after Giovani Benard on Saturday. Hill, who left Saturday's game with a shoulder injury, seems to have had all the momentum until Saturday, even though Green-Ellis is listed second on the depth chart. While the situation remains worth watching, Hill is the better bet if you're on the clock right now.

Green-Ellis gained 19 yards on four carries in Thursday's preseason opener against the Chiefs.
Hype is building around second-round rookie Jeremy Hill, who entered Thursday's game before Green-Ellis, and then gained 36 yards on six carries. While it probably isn't fair to bury the Law Firm entirely, he's seemingly No. 2 on the depth chart in name only.

Green-Ellis is officially listed as the Bengals' #2 running back on their initial depth chart heading into their first preseason game.
This might be more of a nod towards veteran priority than a reflection of the Bengals' in-season intentions. This sort of news, at this time of training camp, won't move the needle in our rankings or projections.
Sun Jul 27 201417:02Trade market for BenJarvus Green-Ellis?
Profootballtalk.com suggests a trade market could emerge for BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
We're skeptical because Green-Ellis is a 29-year-old two-down running back with a $2.3 million base salary, but perhaps the Bengals would try to trade him before cutting him. The 49ers, Colts, and Panthers have all already lost tailbacks to year-ending injuries, while Seattle is shorthanded due to Marshawn Lynch's holdout. Green-Ellis shouldn't cost more than a seventh-round pick.

Wed Jul 16 201408:24Green-Ellis to battle Burkhead for one spot?
The Cincinnati Enquirer believes BenJarvus Green-Ellis will battle Rex Burkhead for one roster spot.

Thu Jun 19 201420:58Green-Ellis could lose his roster spot
Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson agrees that BenJarvus Green-Ellis' roster spot is in danger.
Jeremy Hill was promoted into the No. 2 back role on his first day of practice. Hobson suspects Cincy will keep no more than four backs, so Green-Ellis would have to beat out Cedric Peerman and/or Rex Burkhead, who both have more special teams value than BJGE, and cost much less. Hobson ultimately expects the Bengals to hang onto Burkhead because he's five years younger than BJGE.

Sat Jun 14 201412:59BJGE could be cut before the season begins
ESPN Bengals reporter Coley Harvey guesses BenJarvus Green-Ellis will be cut before the season begins.
Green-Ellis had a underwhelming 2013 campaign and looks to be surplus to requirements with rookie RB Jeremy Hill already running with the second-team offense in OTAs. Green-Ellis could be kept on as veteran insurance, but his roster spot will be hard to justify with $2.5 million in potential salary cap savings on the line. If cut, Green-Ellis would not struggle to find a new home. He still has something to offer as a steady, veteran back.

Tue May 27 201413:57Green-Ellis demoted to 3rd-team offense
BenJarvus Green-Ellis was demoted to the third-team offense as the Bengals opened OTAs on Tuesday.
Giovani Bernard handled first-team reps, and rookie Jeremy Hill was second through the running back line. ESPN's Adam Schefter recently indicated the Bengals are likely to retain Green-Ellis for 2014, but doing so may be hard to justify with $2.5 million in potential salary cap savings on the line. If Hill runs away with the "big back" job, look for Law Firm to get his walking papers.

Tue May 20 201415:46Schefter: Bengals likely to keep Green-Ellis
ESPN's Adam Schefter indicated on NFL Insiders the Bengals are likely to keep BenJarvus Green-Ellis for 2014.
The Bengals could save $2.5 million in cap space by cutting the "Law Firm," but Schefter says they're more likely to keep him as a "mentor" to rookie Jeremy Hill, who had off-field issues at LSU. "There's no reason for the Bengals to get rid of BenJarvus Green-Ellis," Schefter stated. Green-Ellis is also a known favorite of owner Mike Brown. If Green-Ellis sticks around, it would obviously impede Hill's rookie-year fantasy outlook.

Sat May 17 201420:04Bengals can save $2.5M by cutting Green-Ellis
The Bengals can create $2.5 million in cap savings by releasing BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
Bengals OC Hue Jackson has been adamant that the addition of second-round pick Jeremy Hill has no bearing on Green-Ellis' status, but Cincinnati could avoid paying his remaining $500,000 in bonus money by cutting him before June 1. Green-Ellis averaged 3.4 yards per carry last season and isn't going to beat out Hill for a short-yardage role behind Giovani Bernard. He should make it to training camp without being cut, but the Bengals have financial incentive to dump his contract sooner rather than later.

Mon May 12 201410:22Bengals draft BJGE replacement in Hill
BenJarvus Green-Ellis is expected to compete with second-round rookie Jeremy Hill for the big back job.
Green-Ellis sustained a shred of fantasy value last season because he scored seven touchdowns, but the Bengals knew they needed an upgrade on his 3.43 YPC. Enter Hill, a 6'1/233 straight-line power back that can bowl over linebackers. Green-Ellis, owed $2.5 million in total compensation this season, may not even make the final roster once Hill runs circles around him.

Sun Jan 5 201416:20BJGE may have played last game as Bengal
BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed eight times for 42 yards in the Bengals' Wild Card loss to the Chargers.
As is typically the case, Green-Ellis was a rushing factor early until the Bengals fell behind, when more skilled and versatile Giovani Bernard took over as Cincy's primary back with the team attempting to erase a deficit. Green-Ellis is owed $2.5 million in 2014 salary and bonuses. We understand the Bengals' coaching staff has an affinity for Law Firm's reliability, but there is no way he's worth that much money. Don't be surprised if the sides part ways this offseason.

Sun Dec 22 201316:01Green-Ellis scores on 4-yard TD run
BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed 12 times for 24 yards and a touchdown in the Bengals' Week 16 rout of Minnesota.
He added one reception for ten yards. Green-Ellis registered the first score of the game on a four-yard first-quarter touchdown run, but was otherwise bottled up on his carries. Compared to Law Firm's 13 touches, Giovani Bernard handled 15. The Bengals will put a wrap on the regular season when they host the division rival Ravens in Week 17.

Mon Dec 16 201300:29Green-Ellis limited to four carries
BenJarvus Green-Ellis had just four carries for four yards in Sunday night's Week 15 loss to the Steelers.
Green-Ellis started, but barely saw the field in the second half. He didn't appear completely healthy after missing practice time this week with an illness, and wasn't used in red-zone or goal-line situations. Green-Ellis will be just a low-end RB3 for Week 16 against the Vikings.

Sun Dec 15 201319:10Green-Ellis officially active for SNF
BenJarvus Green-Ellis (illness) is active for Sunday night's Week 15 game against the Steelers.
Green-Ellis missed practice time this week with an illness. He'll be available for his usual short-yardage role, but is just a low-upside RB3/FLEX option. Inactive for the Bengals are TE Orson Charles, WR Dane Sanzenbacher, CB Terence Newman, RB Rex Burkhead, OL Tanner Hawkinson, WR Ryan Whalen, and DT Christo Bilukidi.
