LHP Aaron Laffey signed a minor league contract with the Diamondbacks on Monday, and he threw seven innings of two-run ball for Triple-A Reno. Laffey, 32, last pitched in the majors in 2015, when he went 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA in three relief appearances for Washington.

LHP Aaron Laffey might be a candidate for a call-up from Triple-A Syracuse if RHP Matt Belisle (foot) goes on the disabled list. Laffey impressed manager Dusty Baker in spring training and has been used as a reliever and starter for Syracuse this year.

Laffey was designated for assignment prior to Saturday's game against the Cardinals.

The Rockies only brought Laffey up to the big-league club to serve as a long man out of the bullpen on a short-term basis. After he tossed five scoreless innings over the last three days, he wasn't likely to be available out of the bullpen for the next two games, so the Rockies opted to boot him off the 40-man roster in favor of a fresher arm. He'll be replaced in the bullpen by Scott Oberg, who was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move.

With the Rockies not expecting to receive a lengthy outing from spot starter Yohan Flande on Tuesday, Laffey was brought aboard to help out in long relief. Once the bullpen is no longer feeling the effects of overuse, Laffey figures to head back to the rotation at Triple-A Albuquerque, where he's recorded a 4.78 ERA and 1.60 WHIP across 58.1 innings.

The 30-year-old was credited with the win Friday despite giving up three runs on four hits -- including a homer -- over 2.1 innings against Atlanta. Rex Brothers is on his way to Colorado and will likely be added in a corresponding move, while Laffey figures to pass through waivers unclaimed and return to Triple-A Albuquerque to serve as organizational depth.

Laffey should provide extra bullpen depth for the Rockies in the immediate future, but he hasn't posted a great body of work at Triple-A This season. Over 19 games with Albuquerque, the 30-year-old hurler posted a 4.91 ERA and 1.61 WHIP with 33 strikeouts over 47.2 innings.

The move doesn't come as a total surprise, as Laffey looked absolutely abysmal in Friday's spot start against the Yankees. With Brad Lincoln able to operate in a similar role for the Blue Jays, there wasn't a clear need for Laffey on the roster. He'll likely latch on elsewhere, but may have to settle for a minor league deal.

Laffey has struggled to a 7.20 ERA and 2.10 WHIP through 10 innings this season. Robert Carson was recalled to take his place in the bullpen. Teams are always desperate for left-handed relief pitching, so Laffey, 28, should catch on with another big league team.

There was some speculation that the Mets would skip Laffey following two straight postponements, but they'll stick with their regular rotation order. Of course, things could change if any of Tuesday's games are wiped out due to the weather.
