Wed Mar 10 202100:07Now in Chisox 'pen, Kopech makes debut after 2020 opt-out
Michael Kopech is getting used to his new relief role with the Chicago White Sox. Judging by his first Cactus League appearance, it looks like he's going to be just fine. The talented right-hander worked a perfect fourth inning Tuesday against San Diego. It was his first game since he opted out of the pandemic-shortened season for a variety of reasons, including concerns about his mental health. “It’s been a while, obviously,” Kopech said. “But it just felt good to kind of knock some rust off and get back out there and compete.” The 24-year-old Kopech, one of baseball’s top pitching prospects, was a starter coming up through the minors and likely will return to Chicago’s rotation at some point. But he is expected to begin the year in the White Sox bullpen. Part of his spring training work involves getting up to speed when it comes to life as a reliever. He worked out of the stretch against the Padres. “If I am going to be throwing out of the bullpen for part of this year at least and maybe... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Jake Lamb was reinstated from the disabled list Friday by the Arizona Diamondbacks, who hope the return of their All-Star third baseman will boost a struggling lineup."I just know having an impact bat in there is very relieving to everybody. It's 30 home runs and 100 RBIs that's returning to us. We're excited about that. I know there might be some growing pains early," manager Torey Lovullo said, "but we're going to expect big things from him as we did last year."The move came just a few days after the NL West leaders lost center fielder A.J. Shipley, 23, has a 3.66 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 86 strikeouts in 125.1 innings with Double-A Mobile.
Those numbers are awfully pedestrian at first glance, but after a slow start Shipley has come on strong, posting a 2.53 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over his last nine starts. The strikeouts haven't quite been there the way his stuff would suggest they should be, but that often comes in time once a pitcher learns how to better set hitters up with a complete arsenal. Make no mistake, Shipley is still plenty valuable in dynasty leagues and still has the upside to pitch near the front of a rotation.

Shipley, 23, has a 4.37 ERA and 58:39 K:BB ratio through 82.1 innings for Double-A Mobile.
Shipley has pitched better lately, allowing three runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts at this level. However, his strikeout total remains only mediocre, a curious development for a hurler who fanned about a batter per inning last season.

Shipley has posted a 4.77 ERA and 1.61 WHIP with 47 strikeouts and 35 walks in 66 innings for Double-A Mobile.
The dip in strikeouts is a concern for the 23-year-old, as he has been much closer to a strikeout per inning in his previous minor league stops. He remains one of the D-backs' top pitching prospects, but it looks like his path to the majors will take a bit longer as he refines his game.

Shipley, 23, has a 4.35 ERA and 31:22 K:BB ratio through 39.1 innings for Double-A Mobile.
Shipley had better numbers until his last start, when he was racked for 10 hits and seven earned runs. His control has been spotty this season; he has walked at least four batters in consecutive games, and 22 in 39.1 innings in total. Still, this is likely just a minor blip on the radar, as he remains one of the better pitching prospects in baseball.
