Mon Nov 6 202318:28Alex Reyes Hits The Open Market
The Los Angeles Dodgers declined relief pitcher Alex Reyes' (shoulder) $3 million club option for the 2024 season over the weekend, making him a free agent this winter, according to a source. Reyes will receive a $100,000 buyout. The 29-year-old right-hander continues to have shoulder problems and had surgery on his right shoulder in June. He didn't appear in a single game for the Dodgers in 2023 and hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2021, when he was an All-Star with the St. Louis Cardinals. Reyes will likely have to prove his health this offseason before any team takes a chance on the talented but injury-prone hurler. In his five seasons in the majors with the Cardinals, he has a strong 2.86 ERA (3.87 FIP) and 1.34 WHIP with 31 saves, 97 walks and 177 strikeouts in 145 innings over 101 appearances (seven starts).

Wed Mar 1 202321:52Daniel Hudson Progressing, Alex Reyes Not Throwing Off Mound
Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Daniel Hudson (ankle, knee) tore his left ACL last June but was expected to be fully recovered for the start of the 2023 season. However, he experienced right ankle tendinitis that set him back a few weeks. He's throwing bullpens in camp and is feeling healthy, but it's unclear if he'll be built up by Opening Day. Reliever Alex Reyes (shoulder) is still not throwing off a mound and isn't expected to until at least late March. But the right-hander has been throwing regularly as he recovers from a frayed labrum in his right shoulder, and the hope is that he can help the team by midseason. With no designated closer entering the 2023 season, Hudson could be firmly in the mix for the Dodgers if he's healthy. LA's other options include Evan Phillips, Alex Vesia and Brusdar Graterol.

Sat Feb 11 202319:58Alex Reyes Joins Dodgers
Free-agent relief pitcher Alex Reyes has signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The All-Star closer signs a one-year deal worth $1.1 million, which includes a $3 million club option for the 2024 season. This contract is loaded with incentives that could make the deal up to $10 million. The 28-year-old missed all of the 2022 season due to a right shoulder injury. The Dodgers are uncertain if Reyes will be ready to pitch at the beginning of the season. Regardless, they believe that Reyes will be able to make an impact in their bullpen this season.

Mon May 23 202216:53Alex Reyes Needs Surgery
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Alex Reyes (shoulder) needs surgery to fix a damaged labrum in his right shoulder, according to sources. Reyes experienced renewed soreness in his shoulder when throwing last week and was shut down indefinitely. The 27-year-old started the regular season on the 60-day injured list, and it now looks like he'll miss the entire 2022 season, although we'll have a better timetable on his recovery after he goes under the knife. At this point, Reyes might even be lucky if he's ready to go in time for next season. It's extremely disappointing after he made his first All-Star team last year when he recorded 29 saves, a 3.24 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP and 95 strikeouts in 72 1/3 relief innings for St. Louis. Giovanny Gallegos will continue to operate as the team's closer this season.

Mon May 16 202210:00Alex Reyes Shut Down With Shoulder Soreness
St. Louis Cardinals right-handed pitcher Alex Reyes (shoulder) experienced shoulder soreness during his throwing session this past week. As a result, he has been shut down from throwing. Reyes underwent an MRI and the team is currently seeking a second opinion on him. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol stated that this development for Reyes was "very" discouraging. The 27-year-old has yet to make his 2022 debut. He was diagnosed with a frayed labrum prior to the start of the year and had been working his way back. With this recent development, it looks like Reyes could be missing much more time than we originally thought. We expect to have more clarity on Reyes' updated timeline soon.

Fri Mar 18 202222:18Alex Reyes Diagnosed With Frayed Labrum
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Alex Reyes (shoulder) was diagnosed with a frayed labrum in his right shoulder and received a stem-cell injection from Dr. James Andrews. Reyes will not be allowed to throw for "at least" two weeks, so the Cardinals are expecting him to return in late May or early June. It's extremely disappointing news after the former top starting pitching prospect finally stayed healthy for a whole season in 2021 and recorded 29 saves on his way to his first All-Star appearance. He was once again expected to be a big part of the team's closing situation, but now Giovanny Gallegos, Genesis Cabrera and Ryan Helsley will be St. Louis' top options for the ninth inning to begin the year. Fantasy managers should have Gallegos as the top of their list of closing options for the Cardinals.

Wed Mar 16 202210:46Alex Reyes Won't Be On Opening Day Roster
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Alex Reyes (shoulder) will not be on the team's Opening Day roster this year. Reyes is visiting with Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday and will receive an injection to address his right shoulder soreness. The Cardinals will set a schedule on Friday for him to return to throwing. Reyes finally stayed healthy in 2021 and delivered 29 saves for fantasy managers. But the 27-year-old's injury woes are back, so Giovanny Gallegos will likely open as the team's closer in the ninth inning. Genesis Cabrera is also an option for the Red Birds for closing duties alongside Reyes, whenever he gets healthy. Reyes' fantasy shine dims a bit with this news, but once he's back in the mix for saves, he should be rostered in most formats.

Tue Mar 15 202213:25Alex Reyes Undergoes MRI Exam On Shoulder
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Alex Reyes (shoulder) said he underwent an MRI exam on Tuesday and is still waiting for the results on his sore right shoulder. Reyes said he's had lingering pain from last season. It's not what you want to hear with spring training games around the corner later this week. The 27-year-old hard-throwing right-hander finally stayed healthy in 2021 and rewarded his fantasy managers with 29 saves, a 3.24 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 95 strikeouts in 72 1/3 relief innings over 69 appearances out of the bullpen for the Red Birds. Although he may not see as many save chances in 2022 with Giovanny Gallegos penciled in as the closer, Reyes will still have plenty of value for his strikeout ability and as a speculative closing option if he's healthy.

Fri Mar 11 202209:13Alex Reyes, Jordan Hicks Unlikely For Rotation
St. Louis Cardinals pitchers Alex Reyes and Jordan Hicks seem to both be destined for bullpen roles, at least to start the year, according to a Tweet from Cardinals beat writer Jeff Jones. In his Tweet, Jones reported that Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol stated, "I do think getting Alex and Jordan stretched is going to be much more challenging than in a normal time." Neither Reyes nor Hicks started a game for the team last year. Hicks only appeared in a total of 10 games and struggled to the tune of a 5.40 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Reyes, meanwhile, led the team in saves with 29, while pitching to a 3.24 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Giovanny Gallegos is currently the frontrunner for saves in St. Louis this year, but both Reyes and Hicks could emerge as saves candidates as well.

Thu Oct 7 202101:10Alex Reyes Ends The Cardinals Season
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Alex Reyes ended the Cardinals season in the National League Wild Card Game by giving up a two-run walk off home run to Chris Taylor in the bottom of the ninth. Reyes, who seemingly walked every other batter he faced this season and struggled down the stretch, was inexplicably called upon to pitch with a runner on second in the bottom of the ninth inning of a winner-take-all game. The loss on the box score goes to T.J. McFarland, who had left the runner on base, but the real loss is split between manager Mike Schildt and Reyes. Reyes has excellent stuff and is hard to hit, but you can get on base against him almost every time by simply not swinging the bat.

Fri Sep 24 202118:16Alex Reyes Gives Up Four Runs But Wins
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Alex Reyes pitched poorly in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader, but ended up with a win anyway. Reyes pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks, striking out three and allowing a home run. It was vintage Reyes, who threw only 18 of his 33 pitches for strikes. The win puts him at 10-8 with a 3.28 ERA, and he doesn't seem anywhere close to regaining his closer's role. The middle reliever doesn't need to be rostered in most fantasy formats.

Fri Sep 10 202101:30Alex Reyes Picks Up A Win On Thursday
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Alex Reyes earned a win in Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. After the Cardinals starter made it through just four innings, Reyes was called on and pitched the fifth and sixth innings. In his two innings of work, he allowed just one hit and struck out two. Of his 29 pitches, 18 were strikes. Reyes was removed from the closer's role earlier this month, but has been mostly solid in lower leverage situations since then. It's unclear if or when he will be given a chance to make his way back to the ninth inning. The win improves his record to 6-8 and lowers his ERA to an even 3.00. If he's pitching middle innings, though, he likely shouldn't be rostered on most fantasy playoff teams.

Tue Sep 7 202123:19Alex Reyes Pitches In The Sixth Inning On Tuesday
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Alex Reyes, formerly the team's closer, pitched in the sixth inning of a 4-2 deficit on Tuesday. Reyes started the season as the closer and locked down the ninth for the first few months of the season, but struggled mightily in August and was removed from the closer's role. Giovanny Gallegos has been closing for the Cardinals since Reyes was removed from the role, but the team has said they'd like Reyes to have a chance to work back into the ninth. On Tuesday, he pitched one inning, allowing a solo home run but striking out two. With the Cardinals holding on to the outskirts of the Wild Card race, it's unlikely Reyes makes it back into the ninth as long as other relievers are pitching well.

Tue Aug 31 202102:47Alex Reyes Skipped Over For Monday's Save Chance
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Alex Reyes was not called upon for Monday's save chance in a 3-1 game against the Cincinnati Reds. This comes on the heels of a blown save for Reyes which was followed by the team saying they would be reevaluating their ninth inning options. It will most likely end up as a closer-by-committee situation with Reyes still involved, but Giovanny Gallegos got the save on Monday and Genesis Cabrera figures to mix in as well. Reyes could well earn his inning back if he starts pitching better, but he's been escaping a lot of innings by the skin of his teeth all season long. Gallegos could take the job and never look back.

Mon Aug 30 202109:06Alex Reyes Blows Third Save In August
St. Louis Cardinals closer Alex Reyes was hit hard in Sunday's blown save versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. Reyes only recorded one-out, before Yoshitomo Tsutsugo took him deep for a walk-off three-run home run. The closer would finish with an ugly line of one hit, three runs, two walks and one strikeout. Reyes was phenomenal in the first half of the season, but he worked to a 5.40 ERA in July and has been lit up in the month of August with a 7.84 ERA and three blown saves. The former top pitching prospect is now 5-7 with a 2.95 ERA to go along with 29 saves in 33 opportunities. Those who roster Reyes would be wise to insure him with Giovanny Gallegos and Genesis Cabrera, with Gallegos being the priority add.

Wed Aug 25 202118:50Alex Reyes Blows His Third Save On Wednesday
St. Louis Cardinals closer Alex Reyes was charged with his third blown save of the season in Wednesday's game against the Detroit Tigers. He pitched one inning, allowing a run on two hits. The Cardinals were up 2-1 when Reyes came in, but he allowed the Tigers to tie things up at two runs each. The Cardinals would end up winning in the 10th inning anyway, but Reyes was unable to earn the save and keep things to a nine-inning game. He'll take a 2.54 ERA to the mound his next time out and hope for better results.

Sun Aug 22 202118:14Alex Reyes Saves His 28th Game On Sunday
St. Louis Cardinals closer Alex Reyes picked up his 28th save of the season in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Reyes came in to pitch the ninth inning with a three run lead and escaped with a scoreless inning despite giving up two hits among his 13 pitches (10 strikes). Reyes has had a few blow up outings, but has overall had excellent results despite his lack of control. He's blown just two saves in 30 chances and will take a 2.43 ERA into his next appearance.

Thu Aug 19 202100:04Alex Reyes Takes His Sixth Loss On Wednesday
St. Louis Cardinals closer Alex Reyes had another blowup outing on Wednesday, blowing the save and taking his sixth loss of the season. Reyes pitched two innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits. He did not issue a walk and struck out three, allowing a home run. It wasn't a bad outing for his ERA, as only the one run was earned, but he still was unable to work around the errors behind him on defense. Reyes saw his record drop to 5-6 and moved his ERA to 2.47. He's only blown two saves this season somehow, despite his control issues, so he's safe as the ninth inning man for the Cardinals.

Fri Aug 6 202123:32Alex Reyes Bounces Back With A Perfect Inning On Friday
St. Louis Cardinals closer Alex Reyes bounced back from the worst outing of his career by picking up his 25th save of the season. Reyes was unable to get an out in his previous outing, but on Friday he was tasked with saving a 4-2 game and did just that with a 1-2-3 inning including one strikeout. Reyes threw nine pitches, eight for strikes. It was the total opposite of his previous outing, where he was simply unable to throw any strikes at all. Reyes has a strong hold on the closer's job in St. Louis and outings like this one should be more expected than ones like his previous one. His walks are always going to be a concern, but he's hard to hit when he throws strikes.

Fri Aug 6 202102:07Alex Reyes Blows Up Again On Thursday
St. Louis Cardinals closer Alex Reyes had another blow up outing in Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves. Reyes did not record an out but allowed three runs on four walks, also allowing an inherited runner to score. Reyes simply couldn't throw strikes, tossing 21 pitches, only four strikes. He also hit a batter to make for a total of five base runners in his zero-out performance. Reyes has now walked 42 batters in 48 2/3 innings and has an ugly 1.38 WHIP. He's still got a strong hold on the closer's role though, as he's only blown one save in his entire career. Thursday's disaster ballooned his ERA to 2.40; it was 1.85 before he entered the game.
