Thu Mar 2121:53Matt Olson Adds Three Strikeouts To Spring Struggles
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson couldn't get going in Thursday's 5-2 Grapefruit League loss to the New York Yankees, striking out in each of his three at-bats. Over 35 ABs during spring training, Olson is now batting a mere .171 with a .596 OPS, one home run, two RBI, and four runs scored. Fantasy managers spending a second-round pick on Olson this spring are hoping the 29-year-old reigning home run king is getting the struggles out of his system before the games begin to count on March 28 in Atlanta's regular-season opener against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies. After also leading MLB with 139 RBI and the National League in slugging percentage (.604) plus perfect attendance in 2023 (162 games played), Olson is going to be just fine. He's among fantasy's safest bets in 2024 for prolific power numbers in a high-powered Braves lineup.

Mon Feb 2615:27Matt Olson Walks, Picks Up A Hit In Spring Debut
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson made his spring debut on Sunday in a 5-4 Grapefruit League loss to the Boston Red Sox. Last year's MLB home run leader drew a walk on four pitches in his first at-bat, then took a swing at the first pitch he saw in the next at-bat which resulted in a rare infield single for the plodding slugger. The 2x All-Star had a career year in 2023, putting up a .283-54-139-127-1 line and allowing Braves fans to firmly put the days of Freddie Freeman in the rearview mirror. The 2023 Silver Slugger Award winner has played all 162 games his first two seasons in Atlanta and another 40 home run, 100 RBI, and 100 runs scored campaign should be in the offing in 2024. Olson is rightfully the second first baseman off the board in drafts as he won't help in the stolen base category (unlike the aforementioned Freddie Freeman), but is a rock-solid second-round pick for fantasy.

Wed Sep 13 202300:43Matt Olson Crushes 51st Home Run Tuesday
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson continued to build on his league-leading home run totals in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-innings win over the Phillies. Olson went 2-for-4 with a single, a solo home run, a walk, and a strikeout. The 29-year-old is having a career season, slashing .281/.388/.619 with 51 HR and 128 RBI. Elite power has never been an issue for Olson, but if he can maintain his batting average gains then he can vault himself into a top-tier fantasy spot next season.

Thu Aug 10 202317:14Matt Olson Smacks 40th Home Run In Braves Loss
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson cracked his 40th home run of the season, losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-5 Thursday. Olson is now tied with Shohei Ohtani for the league lead in home runs. He has surpassed his career high of 39 in 2021. The most homers a Braves player has hit in a season was in 2005 when AndruwJones smacked 51. At 29 years old, Olson is having another fantastic season hitting .267/.375/.979 with 101 RBI in 427 at-bats.

Tue Aug 1 202302:10Matt Olson Surging Again, Supplies Offense In Loss
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks in Monday's 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. The 29-year-old led off the second inning with a single before clubbing a fifth-inning leadoff homer to put Atlanta on the board. Olson was intentionally walked in the sixth frame before drawing a ninth-inning free pass in an effort to start a rally, but the next three Braves would be retired. The slugger's bat is catching fire again just when it seemed Olson was starting to cool a bit; he's now whacked four big flies (nine RBI) in as many games since July 28. Since Olson's initial warpath began on June 17, he's hitting .333 with 17 blasts and 43 RBI in 129 at-bats across 33 games in this span. Overall, the 2023 All-Star is hitting .263 with an NL-high .593 SLG and 36 bombs to go with an MLB-high 89 RBI over 396 ABs.

Thu Jul 20 202315:31Matt Olson Adds Two More Homers To Sizzling Run In Win
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in Thursday's 7-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 29-year-old took Zac Gallen yard for a two-run blast in the seventh inning before rudely greeting Miguel Castro with a solo shot during the eighth frame for an insurance run. Over his last 25 games, Olson is batting a scorching .337 with 13 homers, 34 RBI and 26 runs scored in 98 at-bats. The 2023 All-Star looks to stay red-hot while slashing .258/.363/.581 with an NL-high 32 long balls and 80 RBI, and one stolen base (365 ABs) heading into a three-game weekend set against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Thu Jul 13 202314:16Matt Olson Looks To Extend National League Home Run Lead
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson, who is currently leading the National League in home runs with 29, is looking to extend his lead as the second half of the season kicks off on Friday. Olson has strung together a ridiculous first half of the year, slashing .254/.358/.569 with 29 home runs, 72 RBI, and one stolen base over 343 at-bats. His power has been prodigious up to this point, smashing at least eight home runs in every month (except July) while notching four multi-homer contests. He was white-hot at the dish in the last 15 games before the All-Star break as well, with a .367/.424/.883 batting line to go along with eight home runs and 20 RBI over 60 at-bats. The 29-year-old slugger is second to only Shohei Ohtani, who has 32 home runs, for the MLB lead. There's no reason to think Olson's power surge will slow down, either, as the Braves host the Chicago White Sox for a three-game set starting on Friday. Chicago's probably starters are Michael Kopech, Lance Lynn, and Dylan Cease, who are all right-handed pitchers. Olson has hit 25 of his 29 home runs off right-handed pitching this season.

Sat Jul 1 202309:10Matt Olson Keeps Raking, Goes Deep Twice
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson went 4-for-5 with two home runs, five RBI, four runs scored, and a triple in Friday's 16-4 blowout win versus the Miami Marlins. The 29-year-old is on some kind of run right now. Since receiving what seemed to be a relegation out of the lineup's two-hole on June 15, Olson is hitting .333 with an astounding 10 homers and 22 RBI over 54 at-bats for a roaring stretch. The former All-Star is giving Shohei Ohtani a run for his money as MLB's home run leader, now up to an NL-high 28 big flies on the year. As Ohtani continues to grab headlines, Olson made a bit of history of his own in this one by breaking Hank Aaron's Braves franchise record for most homers through 81 games.

Sat Jun 24 202309:52Matt Olson Surging, Clubs Two Home Runs
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in Friday's 11-10 shootout loss to the Cincinnati Reds. The 29-year-old is starting a power surge, having belted five round-trippers for 10 RBI in his last seven contests since moving down to the five-hole. Perhaps Olson is making himself comfortable there. In 96 at-bats while batting fifth since 2021, Olson is hitting .302 with 11 dingers and 26 RBI. The former All-Star is slashing .233/.345/.521 with 23 bombs and 55 RBI over 288 at-bats. Hopefully fantasy managers are punting either the batting average or stolen base category to fully appreciate Olson's slugging goodness.

Thu Jun 15 202316:00Matt Olson Drops To Fifth In Batting Order
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson has been dropped to fifth in the team's batting order on Thursday against Colorado Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland. Olson has only hit second in the lineup this year, but Thursday's contest will be the first time he's hit anywhere else. The 29-year-old left-handed slugger is hitting just .228 (59-for-259) on the year and has really struggled against southpaws, going 14-for-74 (.189) against them with just two home runs, 11 RBI and 33 strikeouts against them in 83 plate appearances. He's still a must-start fantasy slugger, but his league-leading 92 strikeouts have really hurt so far in 2023. In his second year in Atlanta, Olson has contributed 10 doubles, a triple, 18 home runs, 45 RBI and 46 runs scored in 68 games. DFS gamers will want to avoid Olson against a lefty Thursday.

Mon May 29 202309:46Matt Olson Blasts Two Homers In Victory
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson provided some pop at the plate during Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The left-handed slugger blasted a 464-foot home run off Dylan Covey in the first inning. That blast was the second longest home run of Olson's career. He went deep again with a 445-foot shot off Connor Brogdon in the fifth inning. Olson went 3-for-5 with four RBI in what ended up being an 11-4 victory on Sunday. The 29-year-old is slashing .237/.361/.540 with 16 long balls and 41 RBI this season.

Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson went 1-for-3 with an RBI double, a run scored, a walk, and a strikeout in a 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners. Olson opened up the scoring on Sunday with an RBI double off George Kirby to score Ronald Acuna Jr. in the bottom of the first inning. He would later reach base with a walk and come around to score off an Eddie Rosario single in the third inning. Going back to his days in Oakland, the 29-year-old first baseman has always had his way with the Mariners. This weekend series was no different as he collected five hits, homered twice, and drove in five runs over the three games. On the season, Olson is slashing .244/.375/.541 with 13 long balls and 35 RBI across 172 at-bats.

Olson singled off Kyle Bradish in the bottom of the fourth inning and scored on an Eddie Rosario base knock in the same inning. He also drew a walk in the contest, adding to his robust OBP. The 29-year-old slugger is performing as expected through the first part of the season. Olson is rocking a .246/.368/.515 triple-slash line to go along with nine home runs and 26 RBI across 130 at-bats.

Sat Apr 15 202301:04Matt Olson Leads Atlanta To A Win On Friday
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson went 2-for-5 with two strikeouts in Friday's massive 10-3 win over the Royals. The 29-year-old was productive in this one, finishing with two RBI courtesy of a 390-foot shot to left in the first inning. Olson is now batting .304 on the year with 14 RBI and five homers. Unfortunately, he's already stuck out 24 times, which is something fantasy managers will probably continue to deal with moving ahead.

Tue Mar 14 202314:26Matt Olson Crushing The Baseball This Spring
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson has been scorching-hot in Grapefruit League games this spring as he heads into his second full season with the team. In 22 plate appearances over eight games to this point, Olson has gone 10-for-21 (.476) with two doubles, three home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored for Atlanta. The 28-year-old left-handed slugger hit .240/.325/.477 with an .802 OPS, 34 home runs, 103 RBI and 86 runs scored in 699 plate appearances and 162 games in 2022. Olson is an excellent source of power and run production, but his batting average can't be relied on. With that said, Olson could produce a better average in 2023 and beyond now that defenders cannot shift against him. RotoBaller has him ranked as the No. 5 fantasy first baseman.

Wed Oct 12 202212:02Matt Olson Hitting Third In Game 2
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson is starting at first base and is hitting third in Game 2 of the National League Division Series on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies and right-hander Zack Wheeler. Olson went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run as the Braves fell short 7-6 in the Game 1 loss on Tuesday. The 28-year-old left-handed slugger hit .240/.325/.477 with an .802 OPS, 34 home runs, 103 RBI and 86 runs scored in 616 at-bats in his first year in Atlanta as Freddie Freeman's replacement. He has 73 home runs and 214 RBI in his last two seasons with the Braves and Oakland Athletics and will remain a serious power threat for Atlanta this postseason.

Wed Oct 12 202200:20Matt Olson Plates Three In NLDS Game 1 Loss Tuesday
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson did his part offensively in Tuesday's National League Division Series Game 1 7-6 loss to the Phillies. Olson went 2-for-3 with a single, a ninth-inning three-run home run, and two walks. Unfortunately, his late pop wasn't enough for the Braves to claw their way back. The 28-year-old should continue to provide plenty of power to the team's lineup, as he slashed .240/.325/.477 with 34 HR and 103 RBI during the regular season.

Tue Sep 27 202200:14Matt Olson Hits 29th Homer Of Season Monday
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, three RBI, a walk, and a strikeout in Monday's 8-0 win over the Nationals. Olson crushed a fourth-inning Cory Abbott offering off the right-field foul pole for his 29th long ball of the season. The 28-year-old has provided more-or-less the production fantasy managers had expected in his first season with his new team, slashing .234/.319/.456 with 95 RBI. It will be interesting to see where he falls in fantasy drafts next season, for while he offers a great deal of power, there are other options at the position with just as much power and higher batting average upside.

Tue Sep 20 202211:37Matt Olson Doubles During Two-Hit Day
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson broke out of a slump in the 5-2 win over the Washington Nationals on Monday by going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Olson entered Monday's game hitting just .074 (4-for-54) with a home run, four RBI, six runs scored and 20 strikeouts in 15 games in the month of September, so his two-hit day was a welcomed sight for his fantasy managers. Overall, the 28-year-old left-handed slugger is slashing .234/.319/.456 with 28 home runs, 91 RBI and 75 runs scored in 561 at-bats in his first year in Atlanta while trying to replace Freddie Freeman at first base. Olson's fantasy managers will be hoping he can get on a run over the final weeks of the regular season.
