Fri Jun 27 201408:42J.J. Putz released by Diamondbacks
Diamondbacks released RHP J.J. Putz.
Putz was designated for assignment a week ago and now is officially a free agent. The Diamondbacks are on the hook for the remaining portion of his $7 million salary from this season, so he'll be able to easily find someone willing to give him a prorated portion of the veteran minimum. Putz holds a 6.59 ERA over 18 appearances this season but posted four straight seasons of sub-3.00 ERAs before that.

Diamondbacks designated RHP J.J. Putz for assignment.
The former closer missed over a month of action with a forearm issue and hasn't pitched well when healthy, posting a 6.59 ERA over 18 appearances. He'll pass through waivers unclaimed given his $7 million salary, but someone will take a gamble on Putz in hopes that he regain his past form.

Sun Jan 5 201408:46Diamondbacks looking to trade RP J.J. Putz
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Diamondbacks are looking to trade J.J. Putz following the addition of Addison Reed.
Putz is owed $7 million in 2014, which is more than the D'Backs want to pay for a setup man. Rosenthal thinks a deal to the Yankees for Ichiro Suzuki or to the Brewers for Yovani Gallardo would make some sense (though they'd have to give up more than Putz to get the latter). Putz dealt with elbow issues and was stripped of the closer role in 2013 but pitched well overall, posting a 2.36 ERA with 38 strikeouts across 34 1/3 innings.

J.J. Putz (finger) is expected to be activated from the disabled list when first eligible on September 8.
