RHP Miguel Socolovich was sent outright to Triple-A Memphis. Socolovich had been designated for assignment May 27. In 15 games with the Cardinals, Socolovich was 0-1 with an 8.68 ERA, allowing 27 hits, including four homers, in 18 2/3 innings with an opponents batting average of .338.

RHP Miguel Socolovich, a 30-year-old native of Venezuela, earned his first career save on Monday night, pitching three innings in a run-away 9-4 Cards win. Socolovich, who signed with the Boston Red Sox as a teenager in 2004, has made a long journey to the majors. He had Tommy John surgery in 2005, was traded to the Chicago White Sox in 2008 and signed a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles in 2012. He made his big-league debut that year with the Orioles and then made three more organization stops -- Chicago Cubs, Japan and the New York Mets -- before joining the Cards in 2014, His big-league totals include a 5-2 record and a 3.66 ERA, and all five wins have come with the Cards.

RHP Miguel Socolovich worked a perfect inning Wednesday at Milwaukee and now has made four straight without allowing an earned run. Socolovich's only earned run this season also came on his only hit allowed -- a solo shot by Yangervis Solarte in his 2016 debut. Since then, Socolovich has allowed just three walks over 8 1/3 innings.

He was a revelation for St. Louis last year, going 4-1 with a 1.82 ERA in 28 games and fanning 27 in 29 2/3 innings.

The righty reliever posted a sterling 1.54 ERA in 23.1 innings with the Cardinals earlier this year and his presence will help keep the rest of the bullpen fresh for the postseason.

The Cardinals optioned Socolovich to Triple-A Memphis to make room for Jonathan Broxton.

It's an interesting transaction, because Socolovich has actually been the more effective reliever this year, posting a 1.54 ERA and 1.157 WHIP in 23.1 innings. He needs to cut down his walks a little (nine in that span), but we'll see him in September, barring other moves in the Cardinals bullpen prior to that.

Socolovich has been recalled from Triple-A Memphis in advance of Tuesday's game.

Socolovich will fill the roster spot of Matt Holliday, who was placed on the 15-day DL on Tuesday with a strained quad. Socolovich has appeared in seven games for the Cardinals this season, allowing five hits and one earned run, while striking out eight, over 7.2 cumulative innings. In 10 Triple-A appearances, he's allowed just one run in 16.2 innings.

Socolovich was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.

The move will clear a roster spot for Jon Jay, who is expected to come off the DL on Friday. Socolovich will continue to provide organizational bullpen depth for the Cardinals going forward.
