Fri Jan 24 201400:20Report: Marlins interested in Vernon Wells
Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports that the Marlins are interested in free agent outfielder Vernon Wells.
Wells is one of the names the Marlins are considering as they attempt to secure a right-handed bench bat. The 35-year-old was released by the Yankees earlier this month after he hit just .233/.282/.349 with 11 homers over 130 games last year. He could be had at the major league minimum, but might have to settle for a minor league offer at this point of his career.

Sun Jan 19 201415:51Phillies showing interest in Vernon Wells
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Phillies have expressed interest in Vernon Wells.
Cafardo adds that "a few teams are beginning to consider a look-see" for Wells. The 35-year-old was released by the Yankees last week, as they decided to just eat the $2.4 million they still owed the outfielder. Wells is obviously a shell of his former self, but he could make some sense in a secondary role with his albatross of a contract off the books.

Yankees released OF Vernon Wells.
Wells was designated for assignment by the Yankees last week and passed through waivers unclaimed. The Angels are on the hook for $18.6 million of his 2014 salary and the Yankees will cover $2.4 million. The team that signs him next will only pay the MLB minimum. Wells, 35, has batted .226/.267/.387 in 1,249 plate appearances since the beginning of the 2011 season.

Fri Jan 10 201413:22Vernon Wells designated for assignment
Yankees designated OF Vernon Wells for assignment.
The Yanks needed to clear room on the 40-man roster, and it's no surprise Wells lost his spot because there really wasn't room for him. The 35-year-old got off to a hot start last season before fading badly, winding up with a .233/.282/.349 batting line and 11 homers over 130 games. He'll likely have to settle for a backup job somewhere.

Wells delivered the biggest blow, knocking a two-run double off All-Star reliever Steve Delabar to cap the comeback. Wells has been relegated to a spare outfielder these days, and he's hitting .244/.290/.365 this year.

In 127 plate appearances since the beginning of last month, Wells has no homers and a .479 OPS. On the plus side, he hit safely in all three games over the weekend against the Red Sox. Of course, all three of those hits were singles. He's not ownable in mixed leagues.

Fri Jul 5 201322:18Wells has walk-off RBI single vs. Orioles
Vernon Wells went 2-for-5 with a walk-off RBI single in a 3-2 win over the Orioles on Friday.
Wells played hero against Orioles' closer Jim Johnson in the ninth inning by pulling a ground ball past a diving Manny Machado to bring Brett Gardner home with the winning run. After going three weeks without a multi-hit game, the veteran outfielder now has three in a row. However, we wouldn't go rushing to the waiver wire to pick him up in mixed leagues again.

Sat Jun 22 201317:36Wells snaps funk, rallies Yankees past Rays
Vernon Wells delivered a pinch-hit, three-run double to lead the Yankees to a 7-5 win over the Rays on Saturday.
Wells entered Saturday's contest in a miserable 9-for-87 funk, but he drove one to the right-center field wall off Jake McGee in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Yankees head. It was ruled as a ground-rule double due to fan interference, but the umpires allowed all three runs to score because it was determined that David Adams would have scored from first base. Zoilo Almonte had another fine day at the dish Saturday, so one big hit might not get Wells back into the lineup Sunday against right-hander Chris Archer.

After hitting .221/.250/.365 in 104 at-bats during May, Wells has gone 1-for-22 to open June. He'll probably lose more playing time to Lyle Overbay against right-handers at this rate.

Vernon Wells hit his 10th home run of the season in the Yankees loss to the Mariners on Wednesday.
It was one of the few bright spots for the Yankees on the night. Wells' resurgent season continues, as he's now hitting .301 to go with his 23 RBI. He's a solid option in mixed leagues for the foreseeable future.

Sat May 11 201321:59Vernon Wells' two-run blast powers Yankees
Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer off the Royals' James Shields on Saturday, powering the Yankees to a 3-2 win.
The fifth-inning blast was the only hit in four at-bats for Wells, but it proved to be the difference in the game. The shockingly productive season continues for the veteran outfielder, who is now hitting .281/.331/.500 with eight long balls and 18 RBI. As long as he continues to mash, he needs to be owned and started in most fantasy formats.

Vernon Wells went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Friday's win over the Blue Jays.
Wells had an RBI ground out in the first inning and a solo homer in the seventh. While the acquisition was largely mocked, the veteran outfielder is now hitting .283/.377/.585 with four home runs, four doubles, seven RBI and a .962 OPS through 14 games. He could be worth a shot in deeper mixed fantasy leagues until Curtis Granderson (forearm) returns.

Wed Apr 3 201322:50Vernon Wells goes deep in loss to Red Sox
Vernon Wells went 3-for-4 and clubbed his first homer as a Yankee in Wednesday's loss to the Red Sox.
The three-run shot, which came in the eighth inning off Alfredo Aceves, was preceded by a single and a double. Wells walked and scored a run in his first game in pinstripes, so he's been one of the few players on the team that's done a little something early on. Travis Hafner also hit his first homer as a Yankee Wednesday.

Tue Mar 26 201315:20Yankees officially acquire OF Vernon Wells
Yankees acquired OF Vernon Wells and cash considerations from the Angels for OF Exicardo Cayones and LHP Kramer Sneed.
The deal is official. As part of the agreement, the Yankees will reportedly cover around $14 million of the $42 million left on Wells' contract. The 34-year-old is set to make his Yankees' debut on Tuesday night and will serve as the team's primary left fielder in the early part of the season. He'll be worth a look in AL-only and deeper mixed leagues, but we're not expecting a renaissance in the Bronx.

Mon Mar 25 201312:21Vernon Wells to take Yanks physical Tuesday
Vernon Wells is expected to take his physical for the Yankees on Tuesday in Tampa, Florida.
The trade won't be official until the physical is completed. The Yankees are going to pay $13 million of the $42 million left on Wells' contract, which makes it a relatively decent deal for Anaheim. Wells is expected to start against all left-handers and some righties in New York.
