Sun Apr 20 201410:32Shortstop Alex Gonzalez released by Tigers
Tigers released SS Alex Gonzalez.
Well, that didn't last long. Desperate for a replacement for Jose Iglesias, the Tigers traded Steve Lombardozzi for Gonzalez in a late-spring deal. The veteran infielder wound up lasting just three weeks, as he hit just .167/.219/.233 while showing diminished range in the field. The Tigers will go with Andrew Romine and Danny Worth at shortstop.

Mon Mar 31 201416:29Alex Gonzalez hits walkoff RBI single vs. KC
Alex Gonzalez hit a walkoff RBI single in the Tigers' 4-3 defeat of the Royals on Opening Day.
Gonzalez smacked an RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3 and then played the role of hero in the bottom of the ninth against Greg Holland, one of the best closers in the game. It was a nice debut for the veteran shortstop, but he's far from an attractive fantasy option. Gonzalez, 37, hit .177/.203/.230 in 118 plate appearances last season for the Brewers.

Mon Mar 24 201409:07Tigers acquire SS Alex Gonzalez from Orioles
Tigers acquired INF Alex Gonzalez from the Orioles for INF Steve Lombardozzi.
The Tigers recently lost starting shortstop Jose Iglesias to dual leg fractures and are now scrambling to fill the vacancy. Gonzalez, 37, batted just .177/.203/.230 in 118 plate appearances last season for the Brewers and had to settle for a minor league contract this winter from the O's. He's not a very exciting option for Detroit.

Fri Jan 31 201412:29Orioles bring in veteran INF Alex Gonzalez
Orioles signed INF Alex Gonzalez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Gonzalez, who will turn 37 in a couple weeks, batted just .177/.203/.230 over 41 games for the Brewers last season before being released in June. The veteran infielder played some third and first base last season and could crack the Orioles' Opening Day roster as a backup infielder.

Fri May 24 201323:11Gonzalez has two-run double in win
Alex Gonzalez delivered a two-run double in Friday's win over the Pirates.
The Brewers couldn't get anything else going against A.J. Burnett and company, but it was enough for the victory. With the double, Gonzalez collected his first RBI since way back on May 2. The 36-year-old infielder is hitting just .188/.217/.248 through 37 games this season and can be ignored in most fantasy leagues.

Alex Gonzalez is sitting out for the second straight game Monday due to a tight left hamstring.
Gonzalez expects to be back in the lineup on Tuesday. "It's just kind of tightness," Gonzalez said. "It feels like when you get hit with a ball and you touch it. I'll have two nights off and I'll be back tomorrow. It's no big deal." Yuniesky Betancourt is at third base Monday, with Martin Maldonado covering first.

Alex Gonzalez went 3-for-4 and scored three times against the Dodgers on Friday.
He was good tonight, but the Brewers have hurt themselves a bunch by failing to come up with a better stopgap than Gonzalez for first base. He's started 17 games so far and hit .186 with one homer.

Fri Apr 12 201321:47Alex Gonzalez diagnosed with hand contusion
Alex Gonzalez has been diagnosed with a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch during Friday's game.
X-rays came back negative, which has the Brewers' breathing a sigh of relief after all of the injuries they have had to deal with in the infield. He should be considered day-to-day, but seems like he'll avoid a trip to the disabled list.

Fri Apr 12 201321:24Alex Gonzalez leaves after hit by pitch
Alex Gonzalez has been removed from Friday's game after getting hit on the hand by a pitch in the second inning.
Gonzalez remained in the game for a few innings before eventually coming out. Yuniesky Betancourt moved over to third base and Blake Lalli took over at first base. The Brewers can ill-afford another injury in the infield, so hopefully this turns out to be only a minor issue.

Sun Mar 10 201308:55Alex Gonzalez to start at 1B with Hart out
Alex Gonzalez is expected to be the Brewers' Opening Day first baseman.
All 1,903 of Gonzalez's games as a professional have come as a shortstop, but the Brewers are lacking options following the knee injuries to Corey Hart and Mat Gamel. The veteran infielder admits to not feeling comfortable at the position yet. "I can tell you it's not easy," he said. "You have to move around. It's totally different (from shortstop). I try to make adjustments and relax and let things happen. I'm doing the best I can."

Fri Feb 22 201319:55Dodgers pursued Alex Gonzalez to play third
According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, the Dodgers pursued Alex Gonzalez this offseason to play third base, before he eventually signed with the Brewers.
The idea would have been for Gonzalez to play some third base, and to "push" shortstop Hanley Ramirez. This could mean that the Dodgers aren't entirely confident that Luis Cruz can handle the hot corner for the entire season.

Sat Feb 9 201317:44Brewers to give Gonzalez work at first base
Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Saturday that he wants Alex Gonzalez to get some work in a first base, potentially serving as the backup to Mat Gamel there until Corey Hart is ready to return from the DL.
In his 14-year career, Gonzalez has played exclusively at shortstop, but could be able to make the transition defensively. It would also be a way to get his powerful bat in the lineup more often, especially against tough left-handers.

Brewers signed INF Alex Gonzalez to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported last week that Gonzalez could earn an additional $1 million with incentives. The soon-to-be 36-year-old appeared in just 24 games last season prior to undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. He's expected to function as a backup to 22-year-old Jean Segura.

Fri Dec 7 201209:47Brewers want Alex Gonzalez back
Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes that the Brewers have a "standing offer" to Alex Gonzalez.
The Brewers would like to bring back Gonzalez, who missed most of 2012 with a torn ACL, as a backup to Jean Segura. "His agent has been very forthright that he's not going to take anything that would indicate he'd be a backup until he exhausts the opportunities to play every day," said assistant genera manager Gord Ash. "I can't blame him." The Cardinals have also expressed interest in Gonzalez.

Wed Dec 5 201220:36Cardinals interest in Alex Gonzalez
FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi hears that the Cardinals are looking for utility infielder help and have discussed Alex Gonzalez.
The Cards have also considered Chris Getz and Steve Lombardozzi as trade options. Gonzalez was limited to just 24 games in 2012 due to a torn ACL but is expected to be ready to go for spring training. He would give the Cards some insurance for Rafael Furcal (elbow).

Thu Sep 6 201209:13Alex Gonzalez (knee) could return in 2012
Alex Gonzalez (knee) is making steady strides in his rehab and has a slight chance of returning this season.
"He's ahead of schedule, so I don't want to say no," manager Ron Roenicke told reporters on Wednesday when asked if Gonzalez might make it back in 2012. "He's probably got an appointment in a couple weeks, and if the doctor says he's ready to go, then we'll have to rethink what we're doing." Gonzalez underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee back in mid-May.

As scheduled. The recovery time for the particular procedure that Gonzalez had is six months, meaning he's done for the remainder of the 2012 season.
