Mon Oct 12 201514:15Freeney will sign one-year contract with Cardinals
Freeney will sign a one-year contract with the Cardinals, NFL.com reports.
Freeney played 16 games for the Chargers last season, compiling 10 tackles and 3.5 sacks in a reduced role. However, at 35 years old, Freeney's 111.5 career sacks rank among the active leaders in the league, and he's familiar with Cardinals coach Bruce Arians from their days with the Colts. While Freeney will likely occupy a specialist role, his presence could bolster an Arizona defense that has forced 13 turnovers already this season.
Mon Mar 2 201516:41Freeney plans to play another season in 2015
Freeney plans to play another season in 2015, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next week, Freeney has just nine sacks in 34 games over the last three seasons. While not the gameplan-ruining monster he once was, he seemingly has enough left in the tank to keep contributing as a situational pass rusher. Now 35 years old, Freeney has long been out of the IDP conversation.

Freeney (non injury-related) no longer appears on the Chargers' Week 12 injury report.
Freeney rested Wednesday, before returning to a full practice session Thursday and is good to go for Sunday's game against the Rams. Despite the name recognition, Freeney is off the fantasy radar, with seven tackles and two sacks through 10 games to date.

Freeney (knee) is active for Sunday's game at Miami.
Freeney has only seven tackles and two sacks on the year so far, but he is available if you need an IDP option.
Fri Jun 6 201400:25Dwight Freeney to play situational role
The Chargers will use 34-year-old OLB Dwight Freeney in a "situational role" this season.
Jarret Johnson figures to "start" on early downs, with Freeney replacing him in pass-rush situations. Melvin Ingram should be an every-down player. Freeney is coming off a torn quad suffered last September. He managed 0.5 sacks across four 2013 games, but pressured QBs at a better clip than that stat suggests.

Sat Mar 15 201412:29Freeney takes a $1 million pay cut
Dwight Freeney agreed to reduce his 2014 salary from $3.5 million to $2.5 million.
The move saves the Chargers just under $1 million against the 2014 salary cap. Freeney only played four games with the Chargers in 2013 after suffering a torn quad late in September. Freeney did not light up the boxscore before going down, but was generating consistent pressure for the Bolts. With Melvin Ingram healthy again, Freeney should be utilized as a pass-rush specialist in 2014.

Tue Oct 1 201318:11Dwight Freeney (quad) sent to injured reserve
Charges placed OLB Dwight Freeney on injured reserve with a torn quadriceps, ending his season.
He's undergoing surgery. Freeney signed a two-year, $8.75 million deal in May, but it's quite possible his Bolts career is over after only four games, as he's due no guaranteed money in 2014. Freeney wasn't making a huge box-score impact before going down, but had graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 8 3-4 outside linebacker. He was generating consistent pressure despite notching only 0.5 sacks. Larry English is sliding into the starting lineup opposite Jarret Johnson.

Mon Sep 30 201309:19Report: Dwight Freeney sustained a torn quad
A source tells NFL Network that OLB Dwight Freeney sustained a torn quadriceps muscle in Sunday's win over the Cowboys.
The Chargers are still trying to determine whether Freeney will land on injured reserve. Regardless, it's a big blow to the Chargers pass rush. Through the first three games, Freeney racked up 13 quarterback hurries, three quarterback hits and a half-sack while playing on 72.3 percent of the snaps. Former first-round pick Larry English is going to have to step up opposite Jarret Johnson.

Sun Sep 29 201318:49Dwight Freeney knocked out with quad injury
Chargers OLB Dwight Freeney was forced from Sunday's game with a quad injury, and will not return.
Freeney remained down for several minutes after getting rolled up in the second quarter. He eventually limped to the sideline, but headed straight for the locker room. Freeney has just 0.5 sacks through four games.

Fri Aug 23 201313:37Dwight Freeney to be every-down defender
Chargers DC John Pagano made it clear OLB Dwight Freeney will be an every-down defender as opposed to a pass-rush specialist.
Freeney is 33 years old, but the Chargers need him to play every snap because they have zero depth in the edge-rusher department after losing Melvin Ingram. "He's going to be an every-down guy for us," Pagano said. "Need him on first, second, third down. He's going to play all downs." It's very hard to imagine Freeney sustaining effectiveness on this kind of workload. San Diego's defense is going to struggle to defend the pass this season.

Wed Jun 5 201313:26Freeney reports to Chargers OTAs Wednesday
Dwight Freeney reported to Chargers OTAs Wednesday.
Freeney waited 18 days to report after signing his two-year, $8.75 million contract. Freeney has missed just five games over the past five seasons, and even going into his age-33 campaign, he should be in tip-top shape for Week 1.

Fri May 31 201308:25Report: Widespread suspicion of collusion
According to CBS Sports' Mike Freeman, various "agents, players and union officials" believe the league's 32 teams colluded to deflate the market in free agency.
Dwight Freeney is one player who believes collusion took place. "I basically think the owners got together and decided not to spend the cash on free agents," Freeney told reporter Mike Freeman. "I think the owners made a pact. There's only 32 of them and none of them broke ranks. I think they all decided not to spend money." A "prominent" agent agrees. "I've been in this business for several decades and there was never an offseason like this. Never." There's been widespread suspicion - and anecdotal evidence - of collusion this offseason, but no hard proof. It's an extremely serious charge, but one that ultimately appears unlikely to stick.

Mon May 20 201309:19Freeney expecting multiple looks in San Diego
New Chargers pass-rusher Dwight Freeney expects to see snaps at both outside linebacker and defensive end.
"They'll run both (the 3-4 and 4-3)," Freeney said of the Chargers, who operate out of a 3-4 base. "They're willing to feature me and free me up to make plays. And they're going to put me in good matchups in the 3-4." Freeney's play slipped as a stand-up outside linebacker in Indianapolis last season, but the Chargers didn't sign him to put him in position to fail. He should get opportunities to put his hand in the dirt.

Sat May 18 201311:27Bolts strike 2-year deal with Dwight Freeney
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Chargers have agreed to terms with Dwight Freeney, formerly of the Colts, on a two-year contract.
33-year-old Freeney recorded 12 tackles and five sacks in the Colts' 3-4 defense last season, but it wasn't a particularly strong fit for his skill set. He was expected to eye a return back to the 4-3, but money talks and the Chargers had a huge need for a pass rusher after losing Melvin Ingram to a torn ACL. Freeney should see significant snaps opposite Jarret Johnson, and the Chargers have already stated that they could tinker their defense to suit the veteran.

Sat May 18 201309:15Report: Chargers nearing deal with Freeney
CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Chargers are closing in on a deal with free agent Dwight Freeney.
Freeney, 33, met with the Chargers on Wednesday and Thursday before skipping town without a deal. His fit in the 3-4 defense is questionable, but the Chargers are desperate for pass-rush help after losing OLB Melvin Ingram to a torn ACL. Pro Football Focus credited Freeney with 34 hurries last season.

Fri May 17 201309:41Dwight Freeney wants to play for the Giants
Free agent Dwight Freeney's dad says he wants to play for the Giants, but can't because they're "broke."
The Giants are up against the salary cap, but are far from "broke." It's just another indication that Freeney's asking price is out of whack. He'd fit the Giants' scheme, but the G-Men don't have a compelling need up front. Freeney left his Chargers visit without a contract, but the sides could still be talking. He doesn't have any other visits lined up.

Thu May 16 201322:30Dwight Freeney leaves Chargers without deal
Free agent Dwight Freeney left his Chargers visit without a contract.
Freeney took a physical on Wednesday, and the two-day visit reportedly "went well." The Chargers are interested in adding the 33-year-old, but money is the likely hang-up in a deal. Also, there are concerns from Freeney's camp that San Diego's 3-4 defense isn't a good fit. Freeney is said to be seeking $4.25 million, and it's uncertain if he has any other visits lined up.

Thu May 16 201308:16Dwight Freeney still visiting with Chargers
Dwight Freeney's visit to San Diego is still ongoing.
Freeney arrived Wednesday and took a physical. He's staying overnight and will continue the visit Thursday, possibly to hammer out a contract. The Chargers appear desperate to get something done after losing Melvin Ingram to a torn ACL Tuesday.

Wed May 15 201301:36Dwight Freeney visiting Bolts on Wednesday
Free agent Dwight Freeney will visit the Chargers on Wednesday.
That didn't take long. There was immediate speculation Chargers GM and former Colts VP of football operations Tom Telesco could bring in Freeney for a visit after Melvin Ingram tore his ACL on Tuesday, and now Freeney will be in Southern California less than 24 hours after Ingram went down. Complicating matters is the fact that San Diego runs a 3-4 defense, the same scheme Freeney struggled to adapt to last season. Freeney will also have to find a price he likes, something he's yet to even come close to.

Fri May 10 201319:20Free agent Freeney to make visits next week
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent Dwight Freeney will begin making team visits next week.
Per Rapoport, the Lions, Titans, and Broncos have shown interest in Freeney and up to "four or five" clubs could be in the hunt. John Abraham has more juice left in his tank, but Freeney may be more willing to play a situational pass rusher role, while Abraham wants to be a full-time defensive end. Freeney turned 33 in February. He had five sacks playing out of position in Indy last year.
