Fri Jan 2620:16Carl Edwards Jr., Cubs Agree On Minor-League Deal
Free-agent relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a minor-league deal on Friday, according to a source familiar with the deal. Edwards had a 3.69 ERA in 31 2/3 innings with the Washington Nationals last season. His deal with the Cubs includes an invitation to spring training. Edwards will be reuniting with the Cubs after breaking into the big leagues with them in 2015. He spent the first four seasons of his career in the Windy City before joining the San Diego Padres in 2019. The 32-year-old veteran right-hander will be attempting to make the Cubs' bullpen out of spring training to open the 2024 season, but he won't be anywhere near the fantasy radar. In his nine years in the majors, Edwards has gone 16-14 with a 3.54 ERA (3.71 FIP), 1.20 WHIP, seven saves and a 28.2 percent strikeout rate in 280 innings pitched over 295 relief appearances.

Wed Aug 23 202318:19Carl Edwards Jr. Shut Down From Throwing
Washington Nationals relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. (shoulder) has been shut down from throwing for the time being. The right-hander has been rehabbing a shoulder injury and came away from an outing feeling some discomfort in his shoulder. The team did additional testing which revealed a stress reaction in his right shoulder. The right-hander has been sidelined since mid-June due to shoulder inflammation. The veteran reliever will stop his rehab assignment for now, so his 2023 campaign could possibly be over.

Fri Jun 16 202300:45Carl Edwards Jr. Records Rare Save
Washington Nationals relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. picked up his second save of the year in a 4-1 win over the Houston Astros. After Kyle Finnegan pitched the eighth and Hunter Harvey blew a save in the ninth, the Nats went to their next option in Edwards Jr. in the tenth. He got the job done, striking out one in a clean inning of work. The 31-year-old has been decent this year, posting a 3.03 ERA and 1.38 WHIP with 22 strikeouts in 10 IP, but he will likely remain the Nationals' third option for saves unless one of Finnegan or Harvey tailspin. He can be left to deep saves plus holds leagues for now.

Sun Apr 9 202310:10Carl Edwards Jr. Closes Out Saturday's Game
The Washington Nationals had a 7-2 lead at the beginning of the ninth inning on Saturday against the Colorado Rockies, but once it got to 7-5 with still no out, they called on Carl Edwards Jr. to finish the game. The right-hander allowed three hits and a run while striking out a batter over his inning of work, picking up his first save of the season. Kyle Finnegan, who has one save but blew Tuesday's contest against the Tampa Bay Rays, pitched the eighth inning Saturday and owns a 14.54 ERA thus far. The Nats might have lost some trust in him, which means Edwards Jr., who's running a 2.25 ERA with three strikeouts over four innings, might receive more save opportunities in the future.

Sun Aug 14 202220:41Carl Edwards Jr. Notches Second Save
Washington Nationals pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. allowed one hit while striking out one batter over a scoreless inning to earn the save during Saturday's 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres. He entered the game in the ninth inning to protect a one-run lead and retired three of four batters he faced to secure his second save of the season. The 30-year-old has now notched two saves over his last three appearances. He owns a 3.24 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and a 40:20 K: BB across 41 2/3 innings in 2022. Fantasy managers searching for saves should look to add Edwards as he has been used as Washington's primary closer over the last few games.

Tue May 10 202215:42Carl Edwards Jr. Joins Nationals Roster
The Washington Nationals selected the contract of right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. on Tuesday. In corresponding moves, they optioned right-hander Andres Machado to Triple-A Rochester and moved right-hander Mason Thompson to the 60-day injured list. Edwards had a 0.63 ERA and 0.50 WHIP while walking four and striking out 17 in 14 1/3 innings for Rochester to earn the call-up. The 30-year-old veteran has bounced around the league and has played for five different teams, including the Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays last season. Edwards won't be fantasy relevant at all, but he'll bring some experience to Washington's bullpen.

Sat Feb 26 202211:10Nationals Sign Carl Edwards Jr. To Minor League Deal
The Washington Nationals signed relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. to a minor league deal on Friday, according to sources. In just 5 2/3 total innings with the Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays last season, Edwards allowed seven earned runs (three home runs surrendered) while striking out six and walking three for an ERA of 11.12 in seven total appearances. The last time the 30-year-old right-hander had success at the major league level came in 2018 with the Chicago Cubs, when he had a 2.60 ERA and 1.31 WHIP while fanning 67 hitters and walking 32 in 52 innings over 58 relief outings. Edwards has a career ERA of 3.77 and three saves in seven big league seasons since 2015, and he'll provide the Nats with an experienced bullpen arm in 2022.

Mon Apr 5 202117:32Braves ink minor league deals with Edwards, Biddle, Sanchez
ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have brought back relievers Carl Edwards Jr. and Jesse Biddle and signed former Gold Glove-winning infielder Yolmer Sanchez to minor league contracts. Edwards, who had success with the Chicago Cubs before injuries derailed his career, was with the Braves in spring training. The 29-year-old right-hander opted out of his minor-league contract after being told he would not be on the opening day roster. Apparently rebuffed in his bid to return to the majors with another team, Edwards decided to rejoin the Braves and try to work his way back through the minor leagues. Sanchez won a Gold Glove as a second baseman for the Chicago White Sox in 2019, when he hit .252 with two homers and 43 RBIs in 149 games. But the 28-year-old played only 11 games for the White Sox during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and was cut by two other teams. The 29-year-old Biddle is a former first-round draft pick by Philadelphia who made it to the big leagues with the Braves' NL East-winning team in 2018. The left-hander had some effective performances out of the bullpen, going 6-1 with one save and a 3.11 ERA in 60 games, but struggled with his control. Biddle got off to a sluggish start the following year and was dealt to Seattle. After also pitching for Texas and Cincinnati, he was cut by the Reds last month in the closing days of spring training. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Thu Mar 25 202120:34Max Fried gets the nod as Braves' opening day starter
ATLANTA (AP) — Max Fried will make his first opening day start for the Atlanta Braves, getting the nod in the wake of two stellar seasons. Manager Brian Snitker told Fried on Thursday that he would go in the opener at Philadelphia against the Phillies. Fried went 7-0 with a 2.25 ERA last season, finishing fifth in the NL Cy Young Award balloting. He established himself as the Atlanta ace after Mike Soroka went down with a torn Achilles tendon. The 27-year-old left-hander had his breakout in 2019, posting a 17-6 record after moving into the rotation early in the season. “It's been really neat to be with Max through this whole run, to watch him mature and become the pitcher that he is," Snitker said. With Soroka — the 2020 opening day starter — still rehabbing from his injury, Fried was the logical choice to get the nod in next Thursday's opener against Aaron Nola of the Phillies. Still, it was a thrill for Fried to get the word officially. “I was excited,” he said. “It's something you dream... [More]
