LHP Tim Cooney will undergo left shoulder surgery and be lost for the season's remainder. Cooney, who in six major league starts last year went 1-0 with a 3.16 ERA, hasn't thrown a pitch all season. St. Louis officials anticipate that Cooney will be ready for spring training in 2017.

Cooney has been shut down for the rest of the year with appendicitis, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Cooney could be in line to compete for a rotation spot next spring depending on how the Cardinals' offseason shakes out. The 24-year-old has the stuff to contribute in the back-half of a rotation for years to come.

Cooney was placed on the 7-day DL at Triple-A Memphis due to a case of appendicitis, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.

It's not clear yet if Cooney will require an appendectomy, a procedure that would likely sideline him for multiple weeks. After going 1-0 with a 3.16 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 31.1 innings in his first six starts this season with the Cardinals, Cooney likely ranks next in line for a rotation spot with the big club should an opening arise, but his standing on the organizational depth chart could change if this latest health scare ends up resulting in a lengthy absence.

Cooney was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.

Cooney was effective in his outing Friday as he picked up his first career win in a 4-2 victory over the Braves. He was scheduled to take the mound again Wednesday, but the Cardinals needed to clear a roster spot for newly acquired reliever Steve Cishek.

Cooney (1-0) struck out five batters over seven innings riday, allowing two runs on five hits in a 4-2 win over the Braves.

Cooney was sharp on Friday matching good stuff with efficiency. In fact, it took Cooney only 74 pitches to get through his seven innings in his first win of his career. The unfortunate thing for Cooney is that Jaime Garcia is right around the corner from returning and he will likely take Cooney's spot in the rotation. His next scheduled start is on Wednesday against Cincinnati, but it remains to be seen if it will be Cooney toeing the rubber that night.

Cooney pitched 5.2 innings, striking out seven and didn't give up a run and walked away with the no-decision in the Cardinals' 18-inning loss to the Mets.

Cooney gave up four walks and racked up 102 pitches and couldn't make it through six innings. However, he was sharp through the first five innings before struggling heavily in the sixth. The rookie starter lowered his ERA to 3.33 and is still without a decision in his major league career.

Cooney gave up three earned runs across five innings while conceding six hits and two walks in Sunday's loss to the Pirates.

Cooney has been solid in this latest stint in the majors, giving up three or fewer earned runs in each of his past three starts. However, he's only notched one quality start this season. After a strong stretch in the minors, Cooney has shown that he can be a major league pitcher and could continue to see opportunities after the All-Star break.

Cooney will start Sunday against the Pirates, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

He gave the Cards a strong effort in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader, allowing just one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three over 5.1 innings. Tyler Lyons, on the other hand, walked five and gave up seven hits over 5.2 innings in Game 1. The team will reward Cooney by giving him the nod in Sunday's first-half finale, and another strong performance could keep him in the rotation coming out of the break.

Cooney gave up one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three over 5.1 innings against the Cubs in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader. He did not factor into the decision in the Cardinals' 5-3 loss.

He gave the Cardinals a better performance than Tyler Lyons did in Game 1, which may make the Cardinals think twice about starting Lyons in Sunday's first-half finale. Cooney gave up five runs in his first two starts of the year (eight innings), but lowered his ERA nearly 150 points with this outing and his K:BB now sits at 12:4 in 13.2 frames.

Cooney was recalled from High-A Peoria on Sunday.

Cooney has already been announced as the starter in one contest of Tuesday's doubleheader, so this move comes as no surprise. Jaime Garcia (groin) was placed on the disabled list in a corresponding move.

If Jaime Garcia is able to make his next start then Cooney should stay at Triple-A for the foreseeable future.

Cooney picked up a no-decision in the second start of his career. He lasted 2.1 innings in his first career start April 30 against the Phillies. He handled the pressure better this time, stepping in for Jaime Garcia. The 24-year-old is slated to make another start Tuesday at the Cubs.

Cooney has been officially recalled to start Thursday's game against the Padres.

Cooney will receive his second major league start Thurday, and will look for a better result than the first time out, when he lasted just 2.1 innings. He doesn't boast a high strikeout rate, sitting down just 63 over 88.2 innings at Triple-A, but he manages to keep hitters off the basepaths with his low walk rate (16 in same amount of frames). The Cardinals placed Jon Jay on the disabled list to open up a spot on the roster.

Cooney is the likely candidate to start Thursday against the Padres, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Cooney hasn't officially been named the starter, but Jaime Garcia will be skipped, which makes him the leading candidate. While the 24-year-old has been great at Triple-A Memphis this season (2.74 ERA, 0.87 WHIP with 63 strikeouts over 88.2 innings), he received a rude awakening in his major league debut, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over just 2.1 innings. Assuming he receives the start, he'll look for a marked performance in his second taste of the big leagues.

Cooney was terrific in a second straight start for Triple-A Memphis, hurling a complete game shutout, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out four.

Cooney has returned to form nicely and will likely get another start for the Cardinals this year should a spot open up in the rotation.

Cooney did not fair well in his one start with the Cardinals this season but there's still a lot of reason to believe he will be a worthwhile MLB starter down the road. Wednesday's game lowers his ERA to 3.00 and his WHIP to 0.90. Triple-A batters are hitting just .196 against the lefty.
