Mets signed INF Brad Emaus to a minor league deal.

Emaus was acquired by the Red Sox in January, but he was evidently released between now and then and has hooked back on with the Mets, who had Emaus for a few weeks last year after taking him in the Rule 5 draft. He could be an option to fill in for the injured Ronny Cedeno.

Emaus, 25, posted a promising .313/.389/.564 batting line with nine home runs and 28 RBI in 45 games last season at Triple-A Colorado Springs. He'll function as organizational infield depth this year for Boston.

Emaus was returned to the Blue Jays after being designated for assignment this week, but it's clear he didn't have a future in the organization. It's not clear whether the Rockies view him as a potential contributor on the major league level, but he should post some nice numbers in the hitter-friendly environment at Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York was told by a "team insider" that the Mets are unlikely to try to retain Brad Emaus.

Well, that didn't last long. Emaus was in the mix for starts at second base when the regular season opened, but he batted just .162 across 42 plate appearances. Daniel Murphy and Justin Turner will presumably share playing time at the position for the Mets going forward. The Blue Jays can buy Emaus back for $25,000.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Friday that Brad Emaus will get "a set, but unannounced" number of at-bats to prove that he handle major league pitching.

Emaus is batting .200/.294/.200 with no extra-base hits and a 7/3 K/BB ratio over his first 34 major league plate appearances. He opened the year as the everyday second baseman, but his recent struggles have opened the door for Daniel Murphy. He deserves a longer look, but the clock is ticking for the Rule 5 pick.

Mets manager Terry Collins said that even though Daniel Murphy is starting at second base Sunday, Brad Emaus will normally start more than two of every three games.

"It really had to do with getting Murphy a start and getting him some at-bats," Collins said. "He's a big piece coming off the bench." Managers typically don't want players to sit too long at the beginning of the season before getting a start, so it's dangerous to read too much into playing time breakdowns this early.

He's been the odds-on favorite since Luis Castillo was cut loose, Emaus is batting .295/.404/.455 with a home run this spring and offers some offensive upside with on-base skills and a bit of pop. There are questions about his defense, but the Mets feel he can at least be adequate at second.

In fact, one scout suggested that Emaus might hit .210 this season while providing below-average defense. Some saw Emaus as the favorite to win the starting second base job entering spring training, but an informal clubhouse poll suggests that Daniel Murphy may have the edge. In fairness, Emaus hasn't gotten much of a chance to show what he can do. He only has 11 at-bats so far this spring.

Emaus took over at second base after Luis Castillo went 1-for-2. Those two are competing with Daniel Murphy and Justin Turner for the starting job this spring. It certainly won't hurt Emaus' case for a roster spot that he'll have to be offered back to the Blue Jays if he doesn't make the team.

Emaus was selected with the 11th overall pick in December's Rule 5 Draft after posting a strong .290/.397/.476 batting line, 15 home runs and 75 RBI last season between the Blue Jays' Double-A and Triple-A affiliate. The Mets are required to keep him on their big league roster or else they must return him to Toronto. If he puts on a show this spring and proves capable of handling a part-time role at second base, that requirement should be easily met.

This is a nice get for the Mets. Emaus, who turns 25 in March, batted .290/.397/.476 with 15 homers, 75 RBI and 13 stolen bases between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Las Vegas this past season. With second base in flux in Queens, he could surprise during spring training.
