Sun Sep 5 202116:46Maikel Franco Joins Braves On Minor League Deal
The Atlanta Braves have signed third baseman Maikel Franco to a minor league deal. The 29-year-old corner infielder was released by the Baltimore Orioles in late August. He hit .210/.253/.355 with 11 homers and 47 RBI during his time with the O's. This isn't a huge signing for the Braves, but does give them depth. Franco has some pop in his bat and is capable of being a 20-25 home run player. The Braves are willing to take the risk, especially on a minor league deal. It's uncertain when or if he'll actually join the Braves active roster. Fantasy managers can go ahead and ignore Franco. He'll be a bench bat, assuming he ever gets to play for the Braves.

Mon Aug 23 202123:36Maikel Franco Designated For Assignment Monday
The Baltimore Orioles designated third baseman Maikel Franco for assignment on Monday. The 28-year-old signed a one-year deal after a very productive 2020 season, but slashed just .210/.253/.355 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI over 403 plate appearances. The O's number 18 prospect second baseman Jahmai Jones was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. The 24-year-old hasn't fared much better, slashing .238/.329/.417 with 10 HR, 35 RBI, and 10 stolen bases over 290 plate appearances. However, this set of moves will give the O's the opportunity to evaluate Jones.Infielder Richie Martin and pitcher Conner Greene were also optioned to Triple-A Norfolk as well. All in all, there aren't many fantasy implications in these moves.

Thu Aug 19 202113:56Maikel Franco Heads To Bench
Baltimore Orioles third baseman Maikel Franco is not in the starting lineup for Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves. Ramon Urias will play third and bat seventh in his place. Franco hasn't been able to replicate what he did in 2020, when he put up a .778 OPS, slashing .214/.258/.363 with 11 HRs, 47 RBI, and 31 runs in 101 games this year. He doesn't have significance in most formats, but can be a factor in AL-only leagues. Fantasy managers rostering Franco should adjust their lineup accordingly.

A look at what’s happening around the majors today: ___ KERSHAW TO INJURED LIST Three-time NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday by the Los Angeles Dodgers because of left elbow inflammation. Kershaw is 9-7 with a 3.39 ERA in 106 innings this season. The 33-year-old left-hander is tied for the NL lead in starts with 18. In his last start, Kershaw allowed three runs in four innings at Washington on July 3, throwing 54 pitches in a rain-shortened game. He had been scheduled to start against Arizona on Friday. ___ ARRIETA SIDELINED The Cubs placed struggling right-hander Jake Arrieta on the 10-day injured list with right hamstring tightness and recalled righty Cory Abbott from Triple-A Iowa. Wed Jul 7 202116:58Orioles 3B Franco placed on IL with ankle injury
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Orioles have placed third baseman Maikel Franco on the 10-day injured list with a problematic ankle sprain that left the team shorthanded when he was unable to play. Franco missed four straight games — including an entire series against the Angels — after hurting his right ankle in a game at Houston on June 30. Manager Brandon Hyde hoped to have him back Wednesday, but Franco wasn't healthy enough to suit up against Toronto. “We've been playing with just the infielders that were on the field,” Hyde said. “If something happens, we would have be creative. We felt like he's just not ready to go yet. The ankle is still bothering him.” Signed as a free agent in March, Franco is batting .221 with nine homers and 42 RBIs in 77 games. Infielder Kelvin Gutierrez was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to fill out the infield. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sat Jul 3 202113:27Royals ship INF Kelvin Gutierrez to Orioles for cash
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals traded infielder Kelvin Gutierrez to the Baltimore Orioles for cash on Saturday. The 26-year-old Gutierrez appeared in 38 games for the Royals this season, hitting .215 with four doubles, two triples, a homer and eight RBIs. He ultimately was caught in a numbers game as the Royals went with a different combination of infielders and Gutierrez was designated for assignment on June 28. Gutierrez was signed out of the Dominican Republic by the Nationals in 2013, then traded to Kansas City in 2018 in a four-player deal that sent closer Kelvin Herrera to Washington. He made his big league debut the following year, appearing in 20 games, but was limited to four games last season due to injuries. Orioles third baseman Maikel Franco is day-to-day with a right ankle injury after rolling it Wednesday in Houston. Franco has been doing rehab work and manager Brandon Hyde said recently he could be ready off the bench. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

A look at what’s happening around the majors today: ___ DO IT AGAIN One night after Zach Davies and three Cubs relievers combined for the seventh no-hitter in the majors this year, matching the most in a season since 1900, Jake Arrieta pitches for Chicago against the World Series champion Dodgers. ROCKET MEN Carlos Correa and the Astros try for their 12th consecutive victory when Framber Valdéz (4-0, 1.67 ERA) starts in Detroit — although the weather forecast calls for heavy rain. Tue Jun 22 202117:19Blue Jays' Manoah suspended 5 games for hitting Franco
NEW YORK (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays rookie Alek Manoah was suspended for five games and fined by Major League Baseball senior vice president Michael Hill, who concluded the right-hander intentionally threw at Maikel Franco last weekend. Manoah appealed the discipline and the suspension will be delayed until after the appeals process. Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo was suspended for one game for Manaoh's actions and served it by missing Tuesday night's game at the Miami Marlins. Manoah, making his fifth major league start, gave up consecutive homers to Ryan Mountcastle and DJ Stewart in a five-pitch span of the fourth inning at Camden Yards last Saturday, his third and fourth homers allowed in the game. The highly touted 23-year-old then hit Franco on the left shoulder with his next pitch, a 93.8 mph offering. Franco yelled at Manoah, the pitcher took several steps toward the plate and held out both arms, and the dugouts and bullpens emptied for several minutes of shoving. Manoah was ejected. Tue Jun 22 202100:19Franco's HR in 8th breaks up Houston's bid for no-hitter
BALTIMORE (AP) — Maikel Franco hit a two-run homer with one out in the eighth inning, denying the Houston Astros in their attempt to throw a combined no-hitter Monday night at Baltimore. Astros starter Jake Odorizzi and reliever Cristian Javier held the Orioles without a hit through seven innings. Then there was a 41-minute rain delay in the top of the eighth. Brandon Bielak came on to pitch the bottom of the eighth for Houston, and after he hit Austin Hays with a pitch with one out — just the second baserunner for Baltimore — Franco sent a drive to deep center field. The Astros lead 10-2. Earlier in Franco's at-bat, Bielak appeared to have thrown strike three, but he didn't get the call from plate umpire Angel Hernandez. Houston was looking to pitch the seventh no-hitter in the majors this season. That would have matched 1990, 1991, 2012 and 2015 for the most since 1900, one shy of the record eight in 1884 — the first season overhand pitching was allowed. Odorizzi pitched the first five... SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks set a major league record with their 23rd straight road loss, making dubious history in getting trounced by the San Francisco Giants 10-3 Thursday. Gallen (1-2) allowed four earned runs in 2 2/3 innings in his first start back from a sprained pitching elbow. Giants starter Kevin Gausman (8-1) limited the D-backs to two runs on four hits in eight innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked one.
