Fri Feb 2320:39Red Sox Sign Joely Rodriguez To Minors Deal
The Boston Red Sox have signed reliever Joely Rodriguez to a minor-league deal. The left-hander returns to the Red Sox after being limited to just 11 outings with the club in the 2023 season due to oblique, shoulder, and hip injuries. The 32-year-old struggled in his brief work a season ago, tossing a 6.55 ERA in his 11 innings of work. Rodriguez is the owner of a 4.70 ERA across 168 career outings, although his 3.84 SIERA in that time suggests he has been better than his surface ERA might suggest. He should serve as a middle reliever for the Red Sox in the 2024 season but his fantasy relevance is at a minimum.

Sat Jul 8 202313:17Joely Rodriguez Activated From The 15-Day Injured List
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Joely Rodriguez (shoulder) was activated from the 15-day injured list on Saturday. Rodriguez missed a little over a month of action with left shoulder inflammation. Injuries have kept him out of the year, anyway, however, as he's worked just four innings (five appearances) to the tune of an ugly 18.00 ERA and 3.25 WHIP. Justin Garza, another struggling reliever, was optioned back to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move.

Tue Jun 27 202316:36Joely Rodriguez To Make Another Rehab Appearance
Boston Red Sox left-hander Joely Rodriguez (shoulder) began a minor-league rehab assignment on June 20 for Triple-A Worcester and gave up two hits while striking out one in two-thirds of an inning. He gave up three hits and a run in two-thirds of an inning on June 23. Manager Alex Cora said on June 25 that Rodriguez will make at least one more rehab appearance before coming off the injured list. The 31-year-old southpaw reliever landed on the injured list on June 1 with left-shoulder inflammation. He had made just five appearances out of Boston's bullpen before the injury and didn't look good, giving up nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits (two homers) while walking six and fanning five in four innings of work.

Wed Jun 21 202309:58Joely Rodriguez Could Return This Week
Boston Red Sox reliever Joely Rodriguez (shoulder) began a rehab assignment on Tuesday with Triple-A Worcester and is expected to make at least one more rehab appearance, according to MLB.com. If there are no setbacks, the southpaw has a chance to return for the club's series against the Chicago White Sox, which begins on Friday. Rodriguez has been dealing with left shoulder inflammation, which has kept him out of action since May 30. The 31-year-old has only played in five games this season, as he also missed time with an oblique injury to start the campaign. Across four innings, Rodriguez has given up eight earned runs on six walks while striking out five. Right now, the six-year veteran has little value in any format.

Mon May 15 202315:23Joely Rodriguez Activated Monday
The Boston Red Sox activated left-handed reliever Joely Rodriguez (oblique) from the 15-day injured list on Monday and designated right-hander Ryan Brasier for assignment in a corresponding move. Rodriguez will be making his 2023 debut when he gets into a game after spending the first six weeks of the season on the shelf with a right oblique strain that he suffered in spring training. The 31-year-old southpaw gave up just one run while striking out nine hitters in five innings during his minor-league rehab assignment at Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. Rodriguez could eventually see some high-leverage bullpen work, which would make him a candidate for a waiver-wire pickup in deep fantasy leagues that reward points for holds.

Fri May 5 202308:54Joely Rodriguez Begins Rehab Assignment Thursday
Boston Red Sox lefty Joely Rodriguez (oblique) began a rehab assignment on Thursday with Triple-A Worcester, pitching a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out a batter. The 31-year-old is working his way back from a right oblique strain that has held him out of action for the entire 2023 to date. Last season, Rodriguez posted a 4.47 ERA and 1.35 WHIP but enjoyed a 26.4% strikeout rate with nine holds. When he does return, he has a chance to be a part of the setup mix with John Schreiber and Chris Martin. However, fantasy managers shouldn't expect Rodriguez to see many save situations, as longtime closer Kenley Jansen will continue seeing the majority of save opportunities.

Mon Mar 6 202312:55Joely Rodriguez To Pitch This Week
Boston Red Sox left-hander Joely Rodriguez (shoulder) will pitch in a Grapefruit League game this week. Rodriguez isn't behind in camp, he's just being careful after having shoulder surgery in the offseason. The 31-year-old southpaw reliever had a 4.47 ERA (3.23 FIP), 1.35 WHIP and career-high 57 strikeouts in 50 1/3 relief innings over 55 appearances in 2022 for the New York Mets. If healthy, he's likely to serve in a middle-relief role for Boston this year. Fantasy managers can most likely ignore him for the time being. In his five major-league seasons, Rodriguez has a 4.56 ERA (3.65 FIP), 1.48 WHIP, one save and a 22.5 percent strikeout rate in 146 relief innings for the Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees.

Sat Feb 18 202311:14Garrett Whitlock, Joely Rodriguez Throw On Friday
Boston Red Sox right-hander Garrett Whitlock (hip) and left-hander Joely Rodriguez (shoulder) threw for the first time in spring training on Friday. Whitlock is coming off a hip injury that required surgery and is expected to be a full-time starter for the BoSox in 2023. The 26-year-old finished his second MLB season in 2022 with a 3.45 ERA (3.29 FIP), 1.02 WHIP, six saves and a 26.4 percent strikeout rate in 31 appearances (nine starts). Whitlock was much more dominant as a reliever, and there's injury risk, but there's still a lot to like if he sticks in a full-time rotation spot. Rodriguez comes to Boston after posting a 4.47 ERA (3.23 FIP), 1.35 WHIP and career-high 57 K's in 50 1/3 relief innings for the New York Mets last year.

Per the Red Sox's tweet, Rodriguez is signing a one-year deal that comes with a club option for the 2024 campaign. He also added 57 strikeouts and nine holds in those 50.1 innings while allowing 26 walks. Sun Apr 3 202212:17Joely Rodriguez Traded To Mets For Miguel Castro
A reliever swap has been made between the two New York franchises. The Yankees have sent left-hander Joely Rodriguez to the Mets in exchange for right-hander Miguel Castro. Castro was the superior reliever by all measures last year, posting a 3.45 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP while averaging 9.9 K/9 over 70.1 innings. Rodriguez, meanwhile, had a 4.66 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP with 9.1 K/9 over 46.1 innings. The Mets were in need of a lefty arm out of the pen, which likely sparked this trade. The Mets' primary setup men Seth Lugo, Trevor May and Adam Ottavino are all righties, so Rodriguez gives the team a southpaw to throw into the mix.

Sat Nov 13 202121:08Yankees Sign Joely Rodriguez

In 46.1 innings split between Texas and New York, the 29-year-old pitched to a 4.66 ERA, a 3.43 FIP, 47 strikeouts, and 18 walks. He also recorded 13 holds, but just four of those came in a Yankees uniform. Fri Jul 30 202119:35Phillies acquire Gibson, Kennedy in trade with Rangers
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired pitchers Kyle Gibson and Ian Kennedy, bolstering their staff in a deadline trade Friday in which they got the Texas Rangers' top starter and closer in exchange for rookie right-hander Spencer Howard and two other pitching prospects. Texas also sent pitching prospect Hans Crouse, a second-round draft pick four years ago, and cash to the Phillies. Howard (0-2, 5.72 ERA), who was Philadelphia’s second-round pick in 2017, is going to Texas with right-handers Kevin Gowdy and Josh Gessner. Gibson (6-3, 2.87 ERA in 19 starts) was a first-time All-Star this season, but the 33-year-old right-hander lost his last three starts for Texas. Kennedy had 16 saves in 17 opportunities for the last-place Rangers, and the 36-year-old right-hander hasn’t issued a walk in his last 11 appearances, a span of 45 batters dating to June 4. “We feel like we made ourselves better and we’re in position where we have another starting pitcher in our rotation for next year. We’ve also... [More]
Thu Jul 29 202122:44Not left out: Yankees get big lefty bats with Gallo, Rizzo
NEW YORK (AP) — Desperate for a powerful, left-handed bat to park balls in the short porch at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees got two of them. Hours after announcing their trade to acquire All-Star slugger Joey Gallo from Texas, the playoff-chasing Yankees worked out a deal for longtime Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo on Thursday. The swaps came on a day the Yankees lost at Tampa Bay 14-0, leaving them far behind Boston in the AL East and fourth in the chase for two wild-card spots. Team officials, including owner Hal Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman, have been holding meetings in nearby Tampa, Florida. “Part of the reason I’m here is because Hal always goes for it, and so does Brian,” Yankees ace Gerrit Cole said after the lopsided loss. “Continue to push chips in. I trust that they’re going to do what’s best for the organization, what’s best to win. I trust they’re going to try and make us better one way or another, and they did.” The Yankees made the moves... Thu Jul 29 202118:45Left turn: Boone says Yankees 'a lot better' with Gallo
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Yankees have answered questions about how they would proceed heading into Friday's trade deadline. They are big-time buyers. All-Star slugger Joey Gallo's trade to New York from the Texas Rangers was completed Thursday, giving the heavily right-handed Yankees a much-needed powerful lefty bat. New York acquired Gallo and left-hander Joely Rodriguez from the Rangers for minor league right-hander Glenn Otto and infielders Ezequiel Duran, Trevor Hauver and Josh Smith. The Yankees will receive $2,722,865 from the Rangers plus another $500,000 in January that is conditioned on Rodriguez’ 2022 option buyout being paid. With switch-hitting center fielder Aaron Hicks hurt, second baseman Rougned Odor and outfielder Brett Gardner have been the only left-handed hitters to see substantial playing time. “Sign me up for the guy that’s on base almost 40% of the time and has power and provides the kind of potential balance for our lineup,” Boone said before New York lost... ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 32nd homer, a season high by a Japanese player in the major leagues, helping the Los Angeles Angels beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Wednesday. Fellow All-Star Jared Walsh homered twice for the Angels, who won for the sixth time in seven games and took two of three from the AL-leading Red Sox. Ohtani topped Hideki Matsui’s total with the 2004 Yankees by hitting a 433-foot shot to right off Eduardo Rodríguez (6-5), putting the Angels ahead to stay in the fifth inning. The two-way star has 15 homers in his past 20 games. Andrew Heaney (5-6) pitched six-hit ball into the sixth, and Raisel Iglesias struck out the side in the ninth for his 18th save.
