David Cooper had a strong day at the plate as the Indians and White Sox played to a 2-2 tie on Friday, going 1-for-1 with a double and a sacrifice fly.
Cooper doubled and scored to get the Tribe on the board in the seventh inning, then plated the tying run with a sac fly in the eighth. He'll need to have many more days like this if he wants to win a bench spot on the Opening Day roster however.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick was the first to report that a deal was close. Cooper appeared in just 13 minor league games (and no major league games) in 2013 due to a serious back issue, but the Indians like his potential and will have in camp next spring on a guaranteed deal. He'll presumably back up Nick Swisher at first base.

Cooper was released by the Tribe in August and failed to latch on with a new team. He is recovered from back surgery and hoping to reestablish himself in 2014. The 26-year-old has a .750 career OPS in the major leagues.

David Cooper (back) is hoping to return at some point this season.
Cooper underwent a career-saving surgery on April 3 to have titanium screws placed into the T-7 and T-8 vertebrae in his back, so he's still a long way from returning. The Blue Jays released Cooper prior to the season, but he could be re-signed on a minor league deal. At the very least, Cooper plans to resume his playing career in 2014.

Cooper hasn't played this spring due to a lingering back issue and now the Jays have decided to cut ties. The 25-year-old batted .300 with four homers and a .788 OPS in 145 plate appearances in the majors last season. Assuming he gets back to full health at some point, he could do well with a change of scenery. Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that the Yankees will take a look.

Cooper ended last season on the disabled list with a back problem, and evidently a winter of rest wasn't enough to heal. The first baseman is consulting with specialists before the next step is determined. Cooper batted .300 with a .788 OPS in 45 games last season for Toronto and would have been in line to compete for a bench job, but obviously that won't happen now.
