RHP Jose Dominguez was promoted from Triple-A El Paso on Friday. Dominguez was 3-3 with a 3.79 ERA in 27 relief appearances for the Chihuahuas.

Dominguez cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Durham on Saturday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports.

With Dominguez's velocity down this season from its usual upper-90s level, the 29 other clubs were understandably shy about putting a waiver claim in on the right-hander after the Rays designated him for assignment last week. The Rays will hope Dominguez can regain form at Triple-A, where he's posted a 6.26 ERA and 21:16 K:BB ratio over 23 innings this season.

The corresponding 40-man roster move for activating Drew Smyly, Domniguez had previously seen major league action in April, throwing 5.2 scoreless innings. Since then, he had been dealing with shoulder issues that limited him to 23 innings at Triple-A Durham. If he clears waivers, he'll stay put in Durham with a much lower chance of seeing the majors in the near future.

The hard-throwing right-hander missed nearly a month with his injury. If he can get hitters out consistently for a prolonged stretch at Durham, the Rays could make him part of the mix for a middle relief role during the second half of the season.
