Brian Tallet has retired from baseball.
The story was reported by Burt Wilson of Lancaster Newspapers and confirmed by MLB Trade Rumors. Tallet, who was pitching for the Lancaster Barnstormers of the independent Atlantic League, will pursue a career in coaching. He finishes his career with a 4.79 ERA in 242 appearances (36 starts) over parts of nine seasons between the Blue Jays, Indians, and Cardinals.

We assume the veteran will probably receive an invitation to spring training. Tallet suffered through an injury-plagued 2011 campaign and posted an ugly 9.45 ERA and 2.18 WHIP over 19 appearances for the Cardinals and Blue Jays. He has an outside shot at cracking the Opening Day roster.

Tallet and (more importantly) his mustache is back is back in Toronto. The 33-year-old southpaw previously posted a 4.71 ERA with the Blue Jays from 2006-2010. Currently on the disabled list with an intercostal strain, injuries have limited him to just 18 appearances this season.

Brian Tallet has been diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease.
Cardinals doctors found cysts along Tallet's kidney this weekend while running a CT scan on his strained intercostal muscle. "Some cases are worse than others," the left-hander said Sunday. "Right now, my case is that all of my levels are normal and everything is fine with them, but I've got cysts in the kidneys. Now, it's just a matter of maintaining the levels that I'm at by drinking more water." He's unlikely to return before the end of July.

Brian Tallet felt no lingering soreness or discomfort in his pitching elbow on Saturday after being pulled from his Friday evening appearance against the Rockies.
"Go out and play catch and if I have no issue...there's no reason I couldn't go out there and throw it tonight and tomorrow," Tallet said on Saturday. Although it's obviously great news that he appears to avoided serious injury, it's unlikely we'll see him again this weekend.

Brian Tallet (fractured hand) struck out the first five batters he faced and retired all six hitters in a rehab appearance for Low-A Quad Cities Tuesday.
That will work. Tallet will have another appearance Friday before possibly being activated, and, based on his results Tuesday, the odds seem good that that will happen.

Brian Tallet (fractured hand) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with low Single-A Quad Cities.
Tallet is expected to throw 30 pitches in his first appearance. He'll have another outing on Friday before being reevaluated and potentially activated. The veteran right-hander allowed two runs -- one earned -- one four hits over his first 4 1/3 innings before going on the disabled list with a fracture of his non-throwing hand in mid-April.

Tallet is finally cleared to play catch and will be fitted with extra padding on his glove hand, which he broke on a play at first base last month. He shouldn't need to pitch in too many games before being ready for activation.

Brian Tallet (fractured hand) threw a bullpen session before Monday's game.
Tallet fractured his right (non-throwing) hand last month and still isn't able to catch any return throws. "It's getting a lot closer," said Tallet. "Right now we're working on getting fitted for a kind of a splint to go in my glove to help protect the hand." Assuming Tallet can find something that does the job, he should be back in a couple weeks.
