Wed May 16 201801:47Cano suspension leaves Seattle with questions, possibilities
SEATTLE (AP) — Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto felt disappointment first when he learned of Robinson Cano's 80-game suspension for violating baseball's drug agreement. Then he thought about the opportunities."I think you all have figured out that I'm an optimistic person by nature," Dipoto said Tuesday. "And it turned into, 'All right, how do we turn this into as positive as we can and solve the problem?'"Seattle has rarely fielded the starting lineup it envisioned this season and yet it has stuck around a competitive AL West race. But none of its previous absences will be impactful as the loss of Cano, an All-Star second baseman suspended Tuesday after testing positive for Furosemide, a diuretic that can be used to mask performance-enhancing drugs.Dipoto said Cano's loss "really leaves an impression." It also ups the pressure on the GM to make a move to keep the Mariners' playoff aspirations alive. Lucky for him, he has a couple of assets working in his favor — a Gold Glove Award-winning... [More]

LHP Marc Rzepczynski earned his second career save, getting out of a bases loaded jam with two outs in the ninth inning of a 7-6 victory against Baltimore on Wednesday. Rzepczynski struck out the only batter he faced, Chris Davis, on three pitches, the last a called strike. "A couple of those pitches were right down the middle and I got away with it," Rzepczynski said. "I've come in with the bases loaded and two outs plenty of times, but never in the ninth inning. My only other career save was a four-out save. I just tried to go out there and attack."

LHP Marc Rzepczynski, who allowed a tying home run to the Mets' Michael Conforto on Friday night, the first left-handed batter to take Rzepczynski deep this season, rebounded with an inning of scoreless relief Saturday. Rzepczynski entered in the seventh after RHP Tony Zych allowed a leadoff single. Rzepczynski walked Conforto, but got Asdrubal Cabrera to ground into a double play and then struck out Jay Bruce to end the inning. "I had a plan with Cabrera not to make the first pitch too good," Rzepczynski said. "I threw him a changeup and got a double play. Being a sinkerball guy, you're always a groundball away from two outs." Rzepczynski, who didn't allow a run in his first 16 appearances this season, has struggled of late. His scoreless inning Saturday dropped his ERA to 3.72. "It's been a long couple of months, allowing too many hits to lefties. But (Saturday) gives me confidence going forward."

Fri Jul 31 201516:47Rzepczynski traded from Indians to Padres on Friday
Rzepczynski was traded from the Indians to the Padres on Friday.
Following a couple years of success with the Indians in 2013 and 2014, the southpaw has been a bit of a letdown this season. Over 45 games, Rzepczynski has allowed 10 runs on 23 hits and 10 walks in 20.1 innings. The lefty-specialist will undergo another change of scenery Friday, so perhaps he'll find his form once again in the pitcher-friendly confines of Petco Park.

Rzepczynski struck out the only batter he faced in Wednesday's win over the White Sox.
Beyond holds leagues, Rzepczynski is unlikely to make much of an impact in most formats. Look for the Indians to use him very similarly to the way he was deployed in 2014, when he tossed 46 innings over 73 appearances and returned a 2.74 with 13 holds in the process.

Tue Jul 30 201317:29Indians get Rzepczynski from STL for Herrera
Indians acquired LHP Marc Rzepczynski from the Cardinals for INF Juan Herrera.
Rzepczynski posted a 4.63 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 79 2/3 total innings for St. Louis after heading over from Toronto in the mid-2011 Colby Rasmus trade. The 27-year-old left-hander has been especially bad this summer and will look to turn things around with a change of scenery. Herrera is a raw 20-year-old infielder from the Dominican.
