Marcum hasn't taken the mound for Triple-A Columbus since Aug. 8 due to elbow troubles. With only five more games on the Clippers' schedule, the 33-year-old veteran could make one final start before the end of the season.

Marcum, who is 7-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 12 starts at Triple-A Columbus, could rejoin the Indians rotation on August 15 when the team needs a fifth starter.

Marcum made six starts for Cleveland earlier this season before being sent back to Triple-A but may get another chance after starter Cody Anderson hit the DL with an oblique strain.

Marcum began to bounce back from a tough start to the season with a solid outing last Thursday against the Seattle Mariners, when he tossed seven scoreless innings with five strikeouts, but he was hit hard Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs, allowing six runs in two innings, which brought his earned-run average to 5.40 in seven games (six starts) this season. "I wasn't throwing anything where I wanted to," Marcum told Cleveland.com after the game. "It was just one of those things where if I try to throw it in I missed away, if I tried to throw it away I missed in. It just wasn't a good day all around." The Indians used nine pitchers in the 17-0 loss, which necessitated the promotion of pitchers Kyle Crockett and Jeff Manship to the big club in order to help in the bullpen.

Marcum (3-2) gave up six runs on six hits and a walk in just two innings Wednesday against the Cubs.

The Indians' bullpen (including outfielder David Murphy) went on to surrender 11 additional runs while their lineup was silenced. Marcum had generally been surprisingly effective since moving into the rotation, but he's a junkballer, and not a particularly good one. His next start is scheduled for Monday against the Tigers.

Fantasy owners can't have great expectations, but he's at least establishing AL-only credibility. Marcum will face the Cubs on Tuesday.
