The Packers placed Nelson (knee) on injured reserve Tuesday.

This move does not come as a surprise with Nelson already expected to miss the entire 2015 season, but his placement on IR confirms that he will not see the field again until 2016. With Nelson out, Randall Cobb -- when healthy -- and Davante Adams will be the Packers' starting wide receivers in 2015.

Nelson will miss the rest of the season with what the Packers describe as a significant right knee injury.

While the Packers did not confirm that Nelson tore his ACL, the bottom line here is that he's done for the 2015 season, which opens the door for second-year player Davante Adams to see expanded opportunities in the team's offense in tandem with Randall Cobb, who now slots in as the team's top wideout. Meanwhile, rookie Ty Montgomery could enter the fantasy equation if he lands the team's No. 3 WR slot, with the likes of Jeff Janis, Larry Pinkard, Ed Williams and possibly Jared Abbrederis also competing for depth chart positioning in advance of the regular season.

Coach Mike McCarthy did not elaborate on the severity of Nelson's knee injury following Sunday's preseason game against the Steelers, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

There have been reports that Nelson may have torn his ACL on Sunday, but McCarthy suggested that the Packers are awaiting further info on the status of the wideout's knee once the team returns to Green Bay. Per McCarthy, "I'm not going to get into preliminary tests. Hoping for good news based on the information I've gotten." While the coach is not alone in hoping for good news pertaining to Nelson, the preliminary indications seem to suggest that's an unlikely outcome. In the event that Nelson's injury is indeed a serious one, Davante Adams would move move up a peg on the Packers' wideout depth chart to a starting role, while Ty Montgomery and Jeff Janis could also see added opportunities in the team's offense.

Nelson suffered a knee injury Sunday against the Steelers that NFL.com indicates, based on the initial diagnosis of the injury, could be a torn ACL.

We'll await confirmation of this potentially big news, either way, with the report indicating that the Packers -- who have yet to elaborate on the wideout's knee issue -- are awaiting Nelson's MRI results at this stage. If the report is accurate, Davante Adams would be in line to take on a bigger role in the team's passing offense.

Nelson -- who appeared to twist his ankle, in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Steelers, headed to the locker room afterward, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

On the plus side, Nelson walked to the locker room with no assistance and didn't appear to be limping, so hopefully the wideout simply suffered a minor tweak of some sort Sunday.

Nelson caught two passes for 25 yards in Thursday's preseason opener against the Patriots.

While his stats Thursday weren't especially notable, the important takeaway here is that Nelson, who underwent an offseason hip procedure, appears healthy at this stage of the preseason. As a starting wideout in an explosive passing attack, Nelson is destined to put up big numbers once again in 2015, assuming he avoids the injury bug.

After March hip surgery held him out of the offseason program, Nelson will thus participate in the opening practice of training camp Thursday. It remains to be seen if he'll ramp up his reps slowly or immediately jump into the fray, but he'll now seek to uphold his standard as one of the most explosive wide receivers in the league.

But it's nothing serious." McCarthy further noted that the issue Nelson had addressed was something that was "kind of hindering him after the Pro Bowl and something he felt he needed to get cleaned up." The wideout is coming off a career-high 98-catch season that resulted in a Packers' single-season franchise record 1,519 yards, to go along with 13 touchdowns.

Nelson had five catches for 71 yards in Sunday's loss to the Seahawks.

Nelson was a virtual non-factor last week against Dallas, making just two catches for 22 yards, but he was the Packers' leading receiver Sunday. The Kansas State product concluded the regular season with 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns, and he closes out the postseason with only seven catches for 93 yards.

Nelson caught just two passes for 22 yards in Sunday's victory over the Cowboys.

Nelson's receiving output was his lowest of the season, but his quiet day did not hurt the Packers, as fellow receiver Davante Adams stepped up with 117 yards and a touchdown. Nelson's next matchup will come against the Seahawks and a secondary that allowed just 185.6 passing yards per game during the regular season.

Nelson caught 6-of-8 targets for 86 yards in Sunday's win over the Lions.

Nelson had a couple of targets in the end zone, but could not convert those opportunities. Even still, he led Green Bay in all receiving categories, and ends the regular season with stellar numbers, catching 98 passes for 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns. He'll be a popular option for those playing in postseason leagues, as the Packers have claimed the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the NFC.

Nelson had nine catches on nine targets for 113 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Buccaneers.

A week after he dropped a number of passes, including a clear long touchdown, Nelson bounced back in a great way, though fantasy owners had to sweat it out a bit, as his touchdown didn't come until 2:45 left in the game. The Packers clinched a playoff spot with the win, though they'll have to beat the Lions in Week 17 to win the NFC North, which should mean Nelson will get a full workload. The Lions limited him to just five catches for 59 yards back in Week 3.

Nelson had five catches on 12 targets for 55 yards Sunday against the Bills.

A pretty brutal game for Nelson, which was made even worse after he dropped a sure 94-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter that would have put the Packers ahead and extended his touchdown streak to three. Instead, Nelson finished with his second-lowest yardage game without a touchdown this season, and he'll look to Week 16 against the Bucs to break through again.

Nelson caught 8-of-10 targets for 146 yards and two touchdowns in Monday's 43-37 win over the Falcons.

Nelson largely made a living on intermediate passes, and then capped his day off with a 60-yard touchdown on a deep ball in the fourth quarter. He and Aaron Rodgers form the most lethal deep combination in the league, as Nelson seemingly scores a touchdown of 50-plus yards every other week. Even with a tough Week 15 matchup in Buffalo, Nelson will be one of the top options at wide receiver.

Nelson had two receptions on six targets for 53 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 26-21 win over the Patriots.

Nelson slipped free on a crossing route late in the first half, running away from defenders for a 45-yard touchdown. Otherwise, CB Darrelle Revis held him in check. Expect bigger numbers from Nelson next week against a very beatable Falcons' secondary.

Nelson had eight catches on 12 targets for 68 yards Sunday against the Vikings.

While he still got plenty of targets, the Vikings did a solid job of limiting Nelson's yardage, with his longest reception going for only 14 yards. Nevertheless, he remains an elite fantasy wideout, though he's got a relatively tough Week 13 matchup against the Patriots, who held Calvin Johnson to just 58 yards Sunday.

Nelson caught 4-of-10 targets for 109 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 53-20 win over the Eagles.

Nelson nearly scored on his 64-yard catch in the first half, but got tripped up from behind. He later scored on a gorgeous 27-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and didn't need to do much after halftime, with the Packers in complete control. He's gone over 100 yards or scored a touchdown in seven of 10 games this year, and will look to stay on a roll in Week 12 at Minnesota.

Nelson caught 6-of-6 targets for 152 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 55-14 win over the Bears.

Nelson oddly caught just three passes for 25 yards in the last game, but he made sure not to waste a favorable matchup this time around. He caught two of the long touchdown passes that he's becoming known for, scoring from 73 and 40 yards out on consecutive drives to give the Packers a 28-0 lead before the 12-minute mark of the second quarter. He didn't get any targets in the second half, as the Packers won in a rout for the fourth time in their last six games. While the blowouts have unquestionably been detrimental to Nelson's previously-thriving targets total, a long touchdown (or two) to No. 87 has typically been part of the winning formula. Next week will bring a matchup more favorable for Nelson's volume, as the Eagles are a mostly strong team with a shaky secondary.

Nelson caught 3-of-5 targets for 25 yards in Sunday's 44-23 loss to the Saints.

Nelson surprisingly turned in his worst showing of the season in a favorable matchup, even as Aaron Rodgers piled up 28 completions and 418 passing yards. The Packers have been heavily reliant on Nelson and Randall Cobb in the passing game this season, but it was Eddie Lacy and Davante Adams who saw nine targets apiece in Sunday's game. Still on pace for 100 catches, 1,474 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, Nelson should bounce back in a favorable Week 10 matchup with the Bears, after the Packers enjoy a Week 9 bye.
