Thu Mar 2116:22Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin To Pitch Thursday
Boston Red Sox relievers Kenley Jansen (back) and Chris Martin (groin) are both scheduled to pitch in Thursday night's Grapefruit League game against the Baltimore Orioles. Jansen didn't make his Grapefruit League debut until last Friday due to lat tightness this spring and then was scratched from a spring appearance earlier this week due to lower-back stiffness. While Jansen is running out of time to be ready for Opening Day on March 28 next Thursday, if he can avoid anymore setbacks with his back, he could still be ready. Martin, who is probably next in line for saves in Boston if Jansen ever misses time, will be making his Grapefruit League debut on Thursday after injuring his groin in early March. Jansen is the active MLB leader in saves, but he's become extremely injury-prone.

Mon Mar 1813:18Chris Martin May Not Be Ready For Opening Day
The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham writes that right-hander Chris Martin (groin) may not be ready for Opening Day on March 28. Closer Kenley Jansen (back) was scratched from making his second Grapefruit League appearance on Monday, but the team still believes he has a shot to be ready by Opening Day. The 37-year-old Martin threw a live batting practice session in camp on Saturday, but he's running out of time to get ready for the start of the regular season. He's expected to need four spring training appearances in order to be ready for Opening Day. This is notable because Martin figures to be the BoSox's next man up for save chances if Jansen misses any time due to injury in 2024. Given Jansen's recent string of injuries and his age (36), it's likely he's going to miss time at some point. Josh Winckowski is another name that could see save chances early in the year if both Jansen and Martin aren't 100%.

Sun Mar 1012:22Chris Martin Plays Catch On Sunday
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Chris Martin (groin) was forced to leave his live batting practice session on Saturday due to injury. Luckily, it sounds like Martin's exit was precautionary and that he'll be fine going forward. The 37-year-old was able to play catch on Sunday without any issues. The Red Sox will likely take it slowly with the right-hander considering it's still early in camp. However, Martin should be back on the mound in a few days. The organization is hopeful for big things from Martin after he posted an excellent season in 2023.

Wed Feb 1400:58Red Sox Willing To Listen To Offers For Chris Martin, John Schreiber
While the Boston Red Sox have been in trade talks for closer Kenley Jansen this off-season, they are also reportedly willing to listen to offers for setup men Chris Martin and John Schreiber. Martin had an excellent 2023 season but is due $9.5 million in 2024, so a potential trade would seemingly be for monetary reasons. Schreiber's salary is not as taxing and he will not be a free agent until after the 2026 season, so the impetus to trade him may be to potentially clear roster space. Both pitchers posted strong peripherals with notable holds numbers, so they could be fantasy-relevant in deeper saves-plus-holds leagues in 2024, regardless of what teams they play on.

Thu Sep 28 202316:32Chris Martin Placed On Injured List
The Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Chris Martin (illness) on the 15-day injured list on Thursday with a viral infection and recalled pitcher Nick Robertson from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. Martin will not be available to finish out the rest of the 2023 regular season this weekend for Boston. The 37-year-old veteran closes out a very impressive year working out of the bullpen, as he finishes with a 1.05 ERA (2.44 FIP), 1.03 WHIP, three saves, 23 holds, just eight walks and 46 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings in 55 relief appearances in his first year with the team.

Tue Sep 19 202300:41Chris Martin Picks Up Second Save Of Season Monday
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Chris Martin earned his second save of the season in Monday's 4-2 win over the Rangers. Martin entered the game to pitch the bottom of the ninth up by two. He got the first out on a strikeout, allowed a single, and got the final two outs on a strikeout and a groundout. Kenley Jansen (illness) is currently on the COVID-19 list, so Martin was called upon to close things out. The 37-year-old has pitched very well this season, compiling a 1.07 ERA in 50 1/3 innings of work. He may see a few more opportunities depending on when Jansen returns, but his fantasy value will be entirely contingent on Jansen's status.

Mon Jun 12 202301:25Chris Martin Earns Clutch Save On Sunday Night Baseball
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Chris Martin notched his first save of the season Sunday, securing a 3-2 win on Sunday Night Baseball over the New York Yankees. Kenley Jansen had just pitched the ninth, so it was up to Martin to finish this one off. It was a huge spot for the 37-year-old to be put in, and he was up to the task. The righty struck out a pair and left the ghost runner stranded at third to give the Sox a big win over their rivals. Martin has been excellent this season, pitching to a 2.29 ERA and 0.97 WHIP with 16 strikeouts in 19 IP. He won't see many saves with Jansen as the primary closer, but he is a decent option in saves plus holds leagues.

Sun Apr 16 202313:36Chris Martin Heading To The Injured List
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Chris Martin (shoulder) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation. The 36-year-old righty has been one of the more reliable arms out of the Red Sox bullpen this season, posting a 2.57 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 2:1 K/BB ratio to go along with three holds over seven innings. Shoulders can be tricky so there's a chance that Martin remains on the IL past his 15 day minimum.

Fri Dec 2 202217:30Chris Martin Agrees With Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox agreed to a two-year, $17.5 million deal with right-handed reliever Chris Martin on Friday, pending a physical, according to sources familiar with the deal. The 36-year-old was excellent for the Los Angeles Dodgers after a deadline trade and parlayed that performance into a multi-year deal on the open market this offseason. He began the 2022 campaign with the Chicago Cubs and had a 4.31 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 31 1/3 relief innings before joining the Dodgers in the second half. With LA, he allowed just four earned runs on 12 hits while walking one and striking out 34 hitters in 24 2/3 innings. Martin will look to help a Boston bullpen that was pretty bad last season, and he should pitch in high-leverage situations.

Sat Jul 30 202213:55Chris Martin Traded To The Dodgers
Chicago Cubs veteran reliever Chris Martin has been acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade, according to Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic. The details of the trade have not yet been released but Martin should help shore up the Dodgers' bullpen down the stretch. The 36-year-old has a 4.31 ERA, .134 WHIP, and 40:4 K/BB ratio over 31 1/3 innings (34 appearances) of relief with the Cubs this year. UPDATE: MLB Network's Jon Heyman is reporting that the Dodgers are sending the Cubs infielder/outfielder Zach McKinstry in the deal.

Tue Mar 15 202214:53Chris Martin Signs With Cubs
The Chicago Cubs signed free-agent relief pitcher Chris Martin to a one-year deal that guarantees him $2.5 million, according to a source. He'll have $500,000 in performance bonuses and a $250,000 roster bonus. The 35-year-old right-hander will work in a setup role in Chicago's bullpen, but he could have a shot at save chances if Rowan Wick falters in the ninth-inning role in 2022. Martin only struck out 6.9 hitters per nine innings in 43 1/3 innings for the Atlanta Braves last year, but he had a decent 3.95 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and one save in his 46 appearances. There will be better speculative closing options to take with late-round fliers in fantasy leagues, but Martin could become a waiver-wire pickup during the season if he surpasses Wick on the bullpen depth chart.

Sat Oct 16 202115:50Chris Martin Included On NLCS Roster
Atlanta Braves reliever Chris Martin is on the NLCS roster to take on the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to the team. Martin couldn't secure a spot on the division series roster but did have a productive season on the mound. He posted a 3.95 ERA with one save in 43.1 innings, although his strikeout rate was down from 30.3% last year to 18.2% this year. The 35-year old veteran takes Dylan Lee's spot on the roster after Lee didn't pitch in the NLDS. As well, utility player Johan Camargo takes outfielder Terrance Gore's spot. Camargo only played in 15 games this season and couldn't get a hit in 18 plate appearances.

Fri Oct 8 202119:36Chris Martin Left Off Atlanta's NLDS Roster
Atlanta Braves reliever Chris Martin wasn't included on the team's 26-man roster for their National League Division Series matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers. The reliever pitched to a 3.95 ERA and a 3.47 FIP in 43.1 innings this season. As has been the case for much of Martin's Major League career, he did an excellent job limiting walks, surrendering just six this season. However, he didn't miss bats at the rate he has in years past. The veteran struck out 65 batters in 55.2 innings in 2019 and registered 20 strikeouts in 18 innings last season. However, his strikeout total fell to 33 this season. With Richard Rodriguez also being left off the roster for the series, Atlanta will rely on a bullpen that includes Jesse Chavez, Luke Jackson, Dylan Lee, Tyler Matzek, A.J. Minter, and Jacob Webb, as well as closer ... [More]

Thu Sep 16 202110:40Luke Jackson Placed On Paternity Leave, Chris Martin Activated
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Luke Jackson has been placed on the paternity leave list on Thursday. He can be absent from the team up to three days, but often times players don't use that much time. In a corresponding move, right-hander Chris Martin (shoulder) has been activated from the 10-day injured list. He missed each of the last two weeks due to shoulder inflammation. Martin has a 4.17 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 27/6 K/BB ratio in 36 2/3 innings this year. There isn't much fantasy value here, but the Braves are certainly happy to have a fresh arm in their bullpen.

Mon Aug 9 202111:07Chris Martin Notches First Save On Sunday
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Chris Martin was called upon to hold a two-run lead in the ninth inning on Sunday. Normally, Will Smith would be asked to close out the game, but had a rough outing on Saturday. Martin allowed one run and two hits, but managed to hold it down and help the Braves get the 5-4 victory. It was his first save of the season, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect many more from him. It would take a few more meltdowns by Smith for him to lose the closer spot. Martin remains only an asset in fantasy formats where holds are important.
