Downs signed a minor league contract with the Indians on Saturday that includes an invite to spring training, MLB.com reports.
Downs was much better after making the jump from the White Sox to the Royals in July, posting a 3.14 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 17 appearances with Kansas City, but the Royals seemingly had little interest in bringing him back given their bullpen depth. As it were, the 38-year-old will remain in the AL Central but join Cleveland, with an opportunity to earn a specialist role in the spring. Downs has held opposing lefties to a .219/.287/.322 batting line for his career.

Downs (neck) was activated from the 15-day DL on Thursday.
A cervical facet sprain forced Downs out of action in early August, but he made it through a live session without issue earlier this week and thus received the green light to return to the Royals' bullpen. Downs' overall numbers this season are ugly, but he's held opposing lefties to a .211/.282/.338 batting line, so he should have little trouble holding onto a specialist role.

He will also be eligible to come off the DL for the upcoming homestand, so we could see him back in the Royals' stacked bullpen in short order.

Downs was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday due to a cervical facet sprain.
Downs hasn't been utilized since Aug. 2, meaning he could be available next Monday in Minnesota, if all goes well. In 50 contests between the White Sox and Royals, he cranked out a 5.29 ERA, 1.471 WHIP, and 25:19 K:BB. Upon his eventual return, though, middle relief is his ceiling.

Downs was released by the White Sox earlier this month after posting a 6.08 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and 22/15 K/BB ratio in 23 2/3 innings. However, the 38-year-old has obviously had plenty of success in the past and is worth a shot at the veteran minimum.
