Fri Apr 1912:10Patrick Wisdom Making Season Debut Friday
Chicago Cubs infielder Patrick Wisdom is making his 2024 debut on Friday against the visiting Miami Marlins and left-hander A.J. Puk, starting in right field and batting second in the batting order. Wisdom was activated from the injured list on Thursday but had to wait to make his season debut on Friday after Thursday's contest against the Fish was postponed due to inclement weather. The 32-year-old has a prime lineup spot and will be hoping to make an immediate impact now that he's back in the big leagues. Wisdom is more of a DFS play against lefties than an asset in single-year fantasy leagues, as he's most likely only going to start for the Cubs when they face southpaws. In his career, Wisdom has an .813 OPS against lefties. He's never faced Puk in his career.

Thu Apr 1818:56Patrick Wisdom Activated From Injured List
Chicago Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom (back) was activated off of the 10-day injured list on Thursday evening. The 32-year-old slugger recently embarked on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa and will be back with the big club ahead of Friday's series opener against the Miami Marlins. Wisdom is a boom-or-bust bat that combines serious home run power with undesirable strikeout numbers. The Cubs infield is already crowded with Christopher Morel and the recently surging Michael Busch, so it is unclear exactly where Wisdom fits in. He would have slightly more value if he found an everyday role, but until then, he is a waiver-wire option for fantasy managers needing power in deeper leagues.

Tue Apr 1621:37Patrick Wisdom Playing Right Field In Rehab
Chicago Cubs infielder/outfielder Patrick Wisdom (back) is continuing his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa and started Tuesday's game at right field for the first time this year. It's an interesting development for fantasy managers to keep an eye on, as Chicago's everyday right fielder, Seiya Suzuki (oblique), is expected to miss several weeks. Wisdom is essentially fully recovered from a back strain, but Michael Busch's recent power surge (five home runs in his last five games) is likely the reason why he hasn't been activated from the IL just yet. It looks like the Cubs could be grooming Wisdom for some action in right field, however, so his return appears imminent. The 32-year-old slugger is an all-or-nothing power hitter who smashed nine homers in his final 36 outings of the season in 2023, and he could be a decent source of pop if he lands a sizable role upon his reinstatement.

Wed Apr 1021:12Patrick Wisdom Could Return During Road Trip
Chicago Cubs infielder/outfielder Patrick Wisdom (back) went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and three RBI as a designated hitter in his minor-league rehab game with Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. He's served as the DH twice after playing third base in his first rehab outing. Out of game action since March 13 due to a back strain, Wisdom has a chance to join the team at some point during Chicago's current road trip that extends until next Wednesday, per manager Craig Counsell. The 32-year-old all-or-nothing slugger went 6-for-16 with two homers and six RBI in spring training before going down, and he will serve as a power bat off the bench for the Cubs upon his return. Wisdom has blasted at least 23 homers in each of the past three seasons, but he's a career .214 hitter and would only have a path to everyday at-bats if Michael Busch were sent back to Triple-A.

Sat Apr 615:09Patrick Wisdom Starting Rehab Assignment
Chicago Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom will begin a rehab assignment in Triple-A on Saturday. There is no definitive date for when he will rejoin the Cubs, although a mid-April return is possible. Wisdom hit .375 this spring with two home runs before a back injury landed him on the IL. Christopher Morel and Nick Madrigal have handled duties at the hot corner to begin the season, with Morel hitting .321 (9-for-28) with two home runs, four RBI, and seven runs scored, while Madrigal is 5-for-15 (.333) with four RBI, one run scored, and one stolen base. Wisdom has had 23 or more home runs for three straight seasons, so managers in need of some power numbers should keep an eye on his return, however, his K% has been no lower than 34.3% over the last three seasons with his batting average hovering just above the Mendoza Line the last two (.205, .207).

Fri Mar 2219:20Patrick Wisdom Will Start On Injured List
Chicago Cubs corner infielder Patrick Wisdom (back) will begin the 2024 regular season on the injured list, according to manager Craig Counsell. The hope is that Wisdom will have a minimum stay on the IL to open up the season. The 32-year-old right-handed slugger offers 20-home run power as a corner infielder in deep mixed and NL-only fantasy leagues, but he doesn't provide much else. When he's healthy, he'll be a part-time player for the Cubs against left-handed pitching and can fill in at third base, first base and designated hitter. In the last three years with Chicago, Wisdom has slashed .214/.298/.474 with 76 home runs, 173 RBI, 16 stolen bases and 164 runs scored in 1,211 plate appearances and 337 games. His fantasy stock is obviously down now that he'll open the 2024 season on the IL.

Mon Mar 418:21Patrick Wisdom Won't Return Tuesday
Chicago Cubs corner infielder Patrick Wisdom (quadriceps) is no longer scheduled to play in the team's Cactus League game on Tuesday. Wisdom remains day-to-day after having a setback with his right quadriceps muscle in camp last week and will be held out for another day. There's still time for the 32-year-old right-handed slugger to be ready in time for Opening Day on March 28. When healthy, Wisdom provides modest 20-homer power from the corner-infield spots in Chicago, but he's likely only to be in the Cubs' lineup when they are facing left-handed pitching. He's had at least 23 home runs in each of the last three years, including a career-high 28 in 2021, but it's come with a .214 career batting average and .298 on-base percentage in six major-league seasons.

Sat Mar 213:32Patrick Wisdom Expected To Return On Tuesday
Chicago Cubs corner infielder Patrick Wisdom (quadriceps) is expected to return to Cactus League action on Tuesday versus the Kansas City Royals. Wisdom was scratched from the team's spring training game on Thursday against the Colorado Rockies with right-quadriceps tightness, but it's not a major issue and he should be ready to go after taking the weekend off to rest up. The 32-year-old right-handed slugger should be ready in plenty of time for Opening Day at the end of March. The former first-round pick by the Cardinals in 2012 out of Saint Mary's has hit 20-plus homers in each of the last three years, but he doesn't provide much else for fantasy managers and may play sparingly in 2024. Wisdom is a career .214/.298/.468 hitter in six big-league seasons.

Thu Feb 2919:21Patrick Wisdom Dealing With Quad Tightness
Chicago Cubs corner infielder Patrick Wisdom (quadriceps) was scratched for precautionary reasons in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Colorado Rockies due to right-quadriceps tightness, according to the team. Wisdom's injury doesn't sound very serious, but Chicago could choose to hold him back for another day or two just to be safe early in spring training. In his first three Cactus League contests, the 32-year-old veteran has gone 1-for-8 with a double. Wisdom hit .205/.289/.500 with 23 home runs, 46 RBI and four stolen bases in 97 games in his fourth year with the Cubbies in 2023 over 302 plate appearances. He's recorded 20-plus long balls in each of the last three campaigns, but the one-dimensional power bat doesn't do much else and is a career .214 hitter. Target him as a modest power/corner-infield option late in deep-mixed fantasy leagues.

Sun Sep 24 202318:59Patrick Wisdom Knocks A Two-Run Homer Sunday
On Sunday, Chicago Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom contributed with a two-run home run and a walk as the Cubs narrowly defeated the Rockies 4-3, completing a crucial sweep. Despite having his playing time reduced, the 32-year-old still has smacked 22 homers in 2023. During the second half of the season, the infielder has posted a .262 batting average with eight homers in 70 at-bats. Overall, Wisdom has posted a slash line of .207/.294/.504 across 290 trips to the plate.

Tue Jul 4 202314:52Nick Madrigal Goes On Injured List, Patrick Wisdom Activated
The Chicago Cubs placed infielder Nick Madrigal (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a right-hamstring strain and activated infielder Patrick Wisdom (wrist) from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. The Cubs also optioned pitcher Hayden Wesneski to Triple-A Iowa selected the contract of pitcher Daniel Palencia and moved reliever Brad Boxberger (forearm) to the 60-day IL. Madrigal will miss the end of the first half of the season after injuring his hamstring on Monday. He's hit a decent .278 (42-for-151) and has seven stolen bases in limited time, but he also has just one homer and 17 RBI. Wisdom has really cooled off from earlier in the year. He has 14 homers in 56 games but is hitting under .200 and has only two hits in his last 33 at-bats over 11 games dating back to May 29.

Fri Jun 30 202314:55Patrick Wisdom Continues Rehab Assignment
Chicago Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom (wrist) will serve as the designated hitter during Friday's game with Triple-A Iowa. The 31-year-old continues to work his way back from a wrist sprain that has sidelined him the last two weeks. Before that, Wisdom was slashing .196/.285/.467 with 14 home runs and 28 RBI in 51 games for the Cubs. The hope is that Wisdom will be ready to rejoin the team around the All-Star break. Until then, Nick Madrigal will continue seeing extended times at third base.

Thu Jun 22 202309:45Patrick Wisdom Taking Swings
Chicago Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom (wrist) has been swinging the bat lately and will travel with the club to London and take some swings there. The slugger was placed on the injured list on Saturday after spraining his right wrist and there's no timetable yet for his return. Over 56 games this year, Wisdom owns just a .196 batting average but has gone deep 14 times with 30 runs, 28 RBI, and two stolen bases. It's hard for fantasy managers to swallow that average, making the 31-year-old droppable in most formats. Expect Nick Madrigal to continue to get most of the reps at the hot corner. The former prospect is hitting just .252 with no home runs but has swiped six bags across 45 games.

Sat Jun 17 202312:07Patrick Wisdom Goes On 10-Day Injured List
The Chicago Cubs placed third baseman/outfielder Patrick Wisdom (wrist) on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with a right-wrist sprain. To add injury to insult, Wisdom has been atrocious at the plate in the last 18 games after hitting well in the first month of the 2023 season. In his last 18 games, he's gone 5-for-54 (.093) with two home runs, five RBI, four walks and 27 strikeouts in 58 plate appearances. The 31-year-old could use some time away to get right mentally, and hopefully he returns to the Cubs in better form at the plate. Overall, he's hitting under the Mendoza Line at .196 (36-for-184) with 14 home runs, 28 RBI and 30 runs scored in 56 games. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues shouldn't feel forced to hold onto him.

Fri May 26 202312:35Patrick Wisdom, Yan Gomes Sitting Friday
Chicago Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom and catcher Yan Gomes are both taking the day off on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds. Wisdom will now be on the bench for the third time in the last five games because he's in a 1-for-21 slump currently, which includes 14 strikeouts. The 31-year-old right-handed slugger is now hitting only .214 (31-for-145) on the year, but he has added 12 home runs and 23 RBI. The 35-year-old Gomes is getting a regular day of rest. In limited playing time, Gomes has been solid with a .290 average (29-for-100) with six home runs and 19 RBI in 28 games. Miles Mastrobuoni is starting at third and hitting eighth on Friday, while Tucker Barnhart is behind the plate and batting in the nine-hole against Reds right-hander Hunter Greene.

Wed May 24 202303:12Patrick Wisdom Picks Up Golden Sombrero Amidst Dry Spell
Chicago Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts on Tuesday, but the Cubbies beat the New York Mets 7-2 anyway. Over his last 24 games, the 31-year-old now holds a terrible .169 average (12-for-71) with just three home runs and five RBI across the skid. With Seiya Suzuki catching fire and Christopher Morel grabbing headlines, Wisdom may stand as the odd man out for playing time once Cody Bellinger (knee) returns from the injured list. The aggressive Wisdom hits the ball hard as regularly as any slugger, but his reckless 39% strikeout rate makes his average hard to stomach in fantasy. He's a borderline hold even on rosters punting that category at this point.

Tue Apr 18 202312:26Patrick Wisdom Blasts Two Homers In Win Over A's
Chicago Cubs infielder/designated hitter Patrick Wisdom went off in the team's 10-1 rout of the Oakland Athletics on Monday. Wisdom finished the contest 3-for-5 with two home runs, four RBI, two runs scored and two strikeouts. He's now hitting .288 (15-for-52) on the year with two doubles, a league-high eight home runs, 13 RBI and 13 runs scored in his first 14 games in 2023. The 31-year-old slugger has gone deep in each of his last four games and is as hot as they come right now. Wisdom is currently tied for the home run lead with the New York Mets' Pete Alonso. Although he's unlikely to be among the league leaders in homers at the end of the year, Wisdom is proving to be a real asset in the power department for fantasy managers early on.

Sun Apr 9 202312:09Patrick Wisdom Resting Against Rangers
Chicago Cubs infielder Patrick Wisdom is not in the team's starting lineup on Sunday against the Texas Rangers. Wisdom will get a breather in the series finale and should be back in the lineup on Monday for the start of a series against the Seattle Mariners at Wrigley Field. The 31-year-old has hit very well in the early going for the Cubbies, batting .348 (8-for-23) with two doubles, three home runs, six RBI and seven runs scored in six games played. With Wisdom starting on the bench on Sunday, Nick Madrigal is getting the start at third base and is hitting eighth against Rangers right-hander Jon Gray. Madrigal is also off to a solid start offensively, going 3-for-10 with a double and two runs scored in his first four games.

Sat Apr 1 202311:32Nick Madrigal In, Patrick Wisdom Out Saturday
Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal is making his first start of the 2023 season on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers and right-hander Brandon Woodruff. Madrigal is starting at third base and hitting eighth, while Patrick Wisdom will start on the bench. The Cubs could have a revolving door at the hot corner this year with Madrigal, Wisdom and Edwin Rios, so it could be a frustrating situation for fantasy managers in deeper leagues. Madrigal was limited to just 59 games in 2022 due to various injuries. The 26-year-old former fourth overall pick by the White Sox can hit, though, and he should be able to bounce back with better health. However, limited playing time is likely to limit his fantasy contributions.

Tue Feb 28 202300:15Trey Mancini, Patrick Wisdom The Main Right Field Backups
Chicago Cubs manager David Ross said Monday that Trey Mancini and Patrick Wisdom (groin) are "the first guys that come to mind" as fill-ins for right field if Seiya Suzuki (oblique) ends up having to miss time with a left oblique injury. Mancini, who was signed this off-season, has played outfield throughout his career in addition to first base. Wisdom is a primary third baseman but did see a bit of time in the outfield for the Cubs last season. It is of note that Wisdom was a late scratch from Monday's Cactus League with left groin soreness. Mancini had an uninspiring 2022 season, slashing .239/.319/.391 with 18 home runs and 63 RBI with the Orioles and the Astros. However, he does own a career .265/.330/.457 slash line, so it is possible that he could provide some fantasy value if he sees enough playing time.
