LHP Michael Roth had his contract purchased from Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday. Roth, a starter in the minors who will work in the Texas bullpen, was 7-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 17 appearances, including 12 starts, with Round Rock.

Roth accepted his outright to Triple-A Columbus on Friday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Roth, who was DFA'd Wednesday, will report back to Cleveland's Triple-A affiliate in Columbus. The 25-year-old lefty has compiled a 4.15 ERA with 70 strikeouts and 37 walks over 19 starts (115 IP) at Triple-A Columbus this season.

Roth signed a contract with the Indians with an invite to major league camp.

Roth elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Angels in November, and he'll try to crack the big league roster in spring training. The lefty struggled in seven appearances in the majors last season, but was 11-7 with a 2.62 ERA in 22 starts at Double-A in 2014.

He hasn't had success at the major league level to this point (7.79 ERA), but Roth is still just 24 and shouldn't have any trouble latching on with another organization.

In two lengthy relief appearances this season, Roth has allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four in 6.2 innings. Because he's a part of the Double-A rotation, his next potential outing could again occur in long relief.

Roth was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake prior to Sunday's game vs. the Rays, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

Roth wasn't likely to be an option for the Angels for the next couple of days, after he was asked to cover 4.2 innings in relief Saturday. He took a beating in the outing, surrendering four runs on seven hits and two walks to inflate his ERA to 5.40 during his brief tenure with the Angels.

Roth will take the place of Tyler Skaggs on the active roster and likely in the rotation as well. He had a brief stint in the majors in Early July, pitching two scoreless innings before being optioned back to Double-A. This stint will probably be longer than the last, and Roth will look to carry his 2.59 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with him to the majors. His biggest struggles come with his control, as he has issued 45 walks over 114.2 innings this season, and it will be something he will try to limit in his time with the Angels.
