Fri Feb 1613:18Xander Bogaerts To Play Second Base In 2024
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts will play second base this year, according to manager Mike Shildt. Ha-Seong Kim will flip with Bogaerts and will be the team's starting shortstop after his breakout 2023 campaign. Shildt hinted at a possible position change for Bogaerts earlier this month, and now it's official. The 31-year-old isn't as good of a defender as Kim is on the infield, so it makes sense, but it makes Bogaerts' 11-year, $280 million contract look even worse. Bogaerts got off to a strong start offensively in his first year in SD in 2023, but he struggled in the summer months and ultimately finished with a decent .244/.308/.358 slash line with 19 home runs, 58 RBI, a career-high 19 steals and 83 runs. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect much more from him moving forward, although he'll be a bit more attractive now that he'll be gaining second-base eligibility in 2024.

Wed Sep 13 202321:22Xander Bogaerts Sitting Wednesday
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts is out of the lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. Ha-Seong Kim will take over at short for the night. Bogaerts has a .370/.414/.741 slash line over his last seven games, but the Padres decided to give him the night off nonetheless.

Sat Aug 12 202310:59Xander Bogaerts Busts Out With Four Hits In Win
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, three RBI, and a stolen base in Friday's 10-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 30-year-old snapped a 21-game homerless drought (one RBI during this skid) with a towering second-inning two run shot. Bogaerts then doubled during the seventh frame before hitting an RBI single in the ninth to put an exclamation point on perhaps his strongest display with the Padres yet. It was also Bogaerts' first four-hit effort of the season. But the power numbers simply haven't been there overall for the five-time Silver Slugger, who's slashing .271/.344/.403 with 12 long balls, 40 RBI, and 13 stolen bases in 420 at-bats.

Mon Jul 10 202300:01Xander Bogaerts Receives Cortisone Shot Heading Into Break
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts received a planned cortisone shot in his left wrist after Sunday's game against the New York Mets. Bogaerts missed a few games in early June with a wrist injury and this appears to be the last step in his recovery process, even though he has managed to play through it for the most part. Bogaerts told reporters that he doesn't anticipate needing another shot and that he is looking forward to a nice second half. Fantasy managers would also be in favor of that, as the 30-year-old has struggled since a scorching hot April, posting a .224/.307/.332 slash line with just four homers since May 1.

Wed Jul 5 202314:34Xander Bogaerts Seeing The Ball Well Lately
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts has five hits (two home runs) in six at-bats in his last two games, and he's also hitting .310 (13-for-42) with three home runs, two doubles, 10 RBI and eight runs scored in his last 11 games dating back to June 23. The 30-year-old already has more long balls (two) in four games in July than he did in all of June, so fantasy managers are certainly hoping he can keep this up for the rest of July after next week's All-Star break. In his first year in San Diego, Bogaerts is hitting .263 (79-for-300) overall with 10 home runs, 14 doubles, 34 RBI, nine stolen bases and 44 runs scored in 342 plate appearances over 80 games. The four-time All-Star remains a must-start at a premium fantasy position.

Fri Jun 9 202318:24Xander Bogaerts Returning To The Lineup On Friday
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) is back in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Colorado Rockies. He has missed each of the last four games due to wrist soreness. Luckily, Bogaerts was able to avoid the injured list and is back in the lineup here. He'll bat fifth and play shortstop versus lefty Austin Gomber on Friday. Fantasy managers should make sure to check their lineups and get Bogaerts back in there.

Wed Jun 7 202314:09Xander Bogaerts Remains Absent Wednesday
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) remains out of the lineup Wednesday against the Seattle Mariners. Bogaerts is still hoping to avoid a trip to the injured list, but he was also hoping to return to action on Tuesday night, making Wednesday's absence a little more concerning. It's been an underwhelming season by his lofty standards, as the 30-year-old is hitting just .252 with seven home runs, six stolen bases, and a .725 OPS across 243 plate appearances for the season. Bogaerts hasn't played since Saturday against the Cubs, so any potential IL stint would be retroactive to Sunday, June 4. For now, Ha-Seong Kim will continue to man shortstop in Bogaerts' absence.

Tue Jun 6 202309:17Xander Bogaerts Hoping To Be Back Tuesday
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) has missed the last two games as he deals with left wrist soreness. However, the club believes he'll avoid a stint on the injured list, and the 30-year-old is aiming to return to the lineup for Tuesday's matchup with the Seattle Mariners, according to MLB.com. Over 57 games this season, Bogaerts is slashing .252/.337/.388 with seven homers, 31 runs, 21 RBI, and six stolen bases. Those numbers are down across the board compared to his career norms, so hopefully, the Aruban native can rebound a bit as the season progresses. Bogaerts remains a must-start in every fantasy format, but he might not be the star he was while in Boston.

Mon Jun 5 202318:12Xander Bogaerts To Miss Second Straight Contest Monday
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) is once again out of the starting lineup for Monday's contest with Kyle Hendricks and the visiting Chicago Cubs. Bogaerts also sat out Sunday's contest due to the wrist ailment, and he'll get another day of rest to heal on Monday. It's been a solid, yet unspectacular season for the 30-year-old given his lofty standards. The former Red Sox star is hitting .252 with seven homers, six stolen bases, and a .725 OPS in 57 appearances, all of which fall well below his career norms. Additionally, his .314 xwOBA is actually inferior to his .323 wOBA so far, meaning positive regression may not be on the horizon. Ha-Seong Kim will move over to shortstop and hit eighth Monday night.

Sun Jun 4 202309:33Xander Bogaerts Likely Out On Sunday At Least
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) is experiencing wrist soreness which forced him from Saturday's contest against Chicago Cubs. The 30-year-old is unlikely to be in Sunday's lineup for the series finale with the ailment. A stay on the injured list remains a possibility for Bogaerts, who inked a lucrative 11-year, $280 million deal with San Diego this past offseason. The five-time Silver Slugger is having a fairly unexceptional Padres debut season, hitting .252 with a .725 OPS to go with seven homers and 21 RBI in 57 games this year. Bogaerts represents a significant loss to both the Friars and fantasy managers alike for however long he is out. Consider him day-to-day in the interim.

Tue May 30 202316:01Xander Bogaerts Expected To Avoid Injured List
San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin said shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) is expected to avoid the injured list despite dealing with recurring wrist soreness recently. "I don't think it's significant enough to where it needs to be an injured-list stint," Melvin said. Bogaerts didn't play on Saturday against the New York Yankees, but he returned on Sunday to go 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and is back in the cleanup spot on Tuesday for the start of a series against the Miami Marlins and right-hander Sandy Alcantara. It's not a get-right matchup for Bogaerts, and his wrist injury has to be at least part of the reason for his poor month of May. In 23 games this month, he's gone just 16-for-87 (.184) with a homer, six RBI and 24 strikeouts in 98 plate appearances.

Sun May 28 202312:21Xander Bogaerts Back In Sunday's Lineup
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) has returned to the team's starting lineup on Sunday against the New York Yankees and right-hander Gerrit Cole, and he'll be hitting cleanup for the Friars. Bogaerts took Saturday's game off while dealing with wrist soreness, but it's apparently not much of an issue. Ha-Seong Kim will move back to third base and is hitting seventh in the batting order. After a strong month of April in which he hit over .300, Bogaerts has struggled in the month of May, hitting .193 (16-for-83) with three doubles, a homer and six RBI in 22 games. His wrist could have something to do with it, but DFS managers will probably want to avoid him against the Yankees' ace in the series finale.

Sun May 28 202300:46Xander Bogaerts Expected Back In The Lineup Sunday
According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) is expected to return to the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale with the Yankees. The veteran has been battling his latest installment of pre-existing wrist discomfort for a few weeks, an injury he suffered in 2017 after getting hit by a pitch. Fortunately, he still appeared on Saturday by serving as a pinch hitter. Bogaerts received a cortisone shot in the wrist during spring training. However, it was a short-term solution, so fantasy managers will probably have to deal with an occasional night off moving ahead, assuming things don't get worse.

Sat May 27 202316:23Xander Bogaerts Used As Pinch-Hitter On Saturday
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) was held out of Saturday's game against the New York Yankees. The 30-year-old is dealing with wrist soreness, so the team decided to hold him out as a precaution. However, Bogaerts was able enter the contest as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning. That being said, it sounds like this wrist injury is a minor issue. The hope is that Bogaerts won't require a trip to the injured list. Fantasy managers will have to check back for another update on his status.

Sat May 27 202312:00Xander Bogaerts Out With Wrist Soreness
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) is out of the lineup on Saturday against the New York Yankees with wrist soreness. It's unknown if the injury is serious enough to potentially land Bogaerts on the injured list, but it could help explain why he's hit just .195 (16-for-82) with only one home run and six RBI in 21 games to this point in the month of May. For now, fantasy managers should consider the 30-year-old to be day-to-day, but we may not see him for the rest of the series in the Bronx. On the year, his slash line has dropped to .259/.353/.407 with seven doubles, seven homers and 19 RBI in 50 games played. Ha-Seong Kim (knee) is making his return to the lineup on Saturday and will start at shortstop and hit eighth against Yankees right-hander Luis Severino.

Tue May 2 202321:03Xander Bogaerts Missing From Tuesday's Lineup
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's matchup with right-hander Graham Ashcraft and the Cincinnati Reds, according to MLB.com. The 30-year-old has yet to sit the bench this season and is slashing .304/.392/.500 with six home runs, 22 runs, 13 RBI, and one stolen base across 30 games. Nelson Cruz will take his spot in the batting order and will serve as the designated hitter from the cleanup position. The 42-year-old veteran has bounced back thus far through 20 games, batting .299 with three long balls and an .837 OPS. Cruz is a solid option for streaming if he's available on the waiver wire, especially for fantasy managers looking for a power bat.

Fri Apr 7 202316:25Xander Bogaerts Hitting Leadoff For Friars
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts is hitting leadoff on Friday against rookie left-hander Jared Shuster and the Atlanta Braves. Bogaerts has been hitting first for the Padres when they face a southpaw, with outfielder Trent Grisham dropping to the eighth spot in the batting order. The 30-year-old Bogaerts is an absolute must-start in fantasy lineups against an inexperienced left-hander on this night. In his first year in San Diego so far, Bogaerts has gone 9-for-25 (.360) with three doubles, three home runs, seven RBI and seven runs scored in seven games played.

Fri Mar 24 202313:29Xander Bogaerts Wearing Splint, Receives Cortisone Shot
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (wrist) is wearing a splint on his left wrist after receiving a cortisone shot and is expected to be held out the next two days in the Cactus League. He will then play the final two spring games and be good for the start of the 2023 regular season next Thursday. It's being described as an issue that Bogaerts usually experiences in spring training. It sounds more than minor, but as long as the 30-year-old is able to return to Cactus League action, it should ease fantasy managers' concerns. The move to Petco Park in 2023 is certainly a downgrade for Bogaerts' fantasy profile, but he'll also be receiving an upgrade in the lineup around him. He remains one of the better shortstop targets out there in fantasy.

Thu Mar 16 202322:44Xander Bogaerts Rakes For Netherlands Wednesday
San Diego Padres and Team Netherlands shortstopXander Bogaertsenjoyed a big day on Wednesday in a 3-1 victory over Panama at the World Baseball Classic. Bogaerts went 3-for-4 with a home run while showing off some stellar work with the glove and scoring a key insurance run in the eighth inning. For the tournament, the former Red Sox shortstop is hitting .267 with a double in addition to the aforementioned long ball alongside a .886 OPS across 15 at-bats. The 30-year-old struggled in spring training before departing for the World Baseball Classic, hitting just .154 with a .368 OPS across 13 Grapefruit League at-bats. Bogaerts signed an 11-year megadeal with the Padres this winter after hitting .307 with 11 HR, eight stolen bases, and a .833 OPS with the Red Sox in 2022.

Thu Dec 8 202201:03Padres Agree With Xander Bogaerts On 11-Year Deal
The San Diego Padres agreed to an 11-year, $280 million deal with free-agent shortstop Xander Bogaerts on Wednesday night. It comes after Trea Turner scored an 11-year, $300 million deal from the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. Bogaerts has been an All-Star in three of the last four seasons and was extremely productive yet again in 2022 for the Boston Red Sox, slashing .307/.377/.456 with an .833 OPS, 15 home runs, 73 RBI, 84 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 150 games. The power drop from 23 to 15 homers has to be a bit concerning, though, as he enters his 30s. He'll have plenty of chances to drive in and score runs in a loaded Padres lineup, however. The addition of Bogaerts officially means the Padres are prepared to move star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. to the outfield.
