CF Slade Heathcott was released by the Yankees. Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders had placed Heathcott on the 7-day disabled list May 11. Heathcott did not play for the Yankees in 2016 but went 10-for-25 (.400) in 17 games last season.

Heathcott came off the bench to hit a go-ahead three-run homer in Monday's 4-1 win over the Rays.

Heathcott was Monday's unlikely hero, as the 24-year-old's clutch home run came in his first at-bat since being recalled from Triple-A Scranton. The left-handed rookie came up big against the Rays, but may not play much down the stretch; with the Yankees fighting for a playoff spot, they may be reluctant to call upon the unheralded Heathcott for regular playing time.

Heathcott was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.

With the minor league season wrapped up the Yankees had no reason not to bring up Heathcott, who was already on the 40-man roster. Heathcott can play all three outfield positions, but he does not bring much to the table offensively.

Heathcott (quad) was activated off the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.

Heathcott saw a brief run of success with the Yankees earlier in the season, but a quad strain sent him to the 15-day and then 60-day disabled list. With the other Yankees outfielders healthy, there's no room for the 24-year-old outfielder in the everyday lineup. He'll return to Triple-A, where he should receive at-bats on a consistent basis, but he could be a candidate for a September call-up.

Heathcott (quadriceps) will move his rehab assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.

Heathcott, who has been out since late May with a Grade 2 quad strain, recently wrapped up a three-game rehab stint with Low-A Charleston, with whom he went 2-for-9. The Yankees have their regular outfielders at full health at present, so once Heathcott's 20-day rehab window draws to a close, expect him to be taken off the 60-day DL but remain at Triple-A.

It's just a procedural move by the Yankees, as the team needed Heathcott's roster spot to create room for reliever Esmil Rogers. Heathcott has been on the DL since late May with a Grade 2 quadriceps strain and isn't expected back until August.

Heathcott is expected to spend more than the minimum 15 days on the disabled list after suffering a Grade 2 quadriceps strain. Ramon Flores was recalled in a corresponding move, and could be a candidate for playing time in left if Brett Gardner does indeed see more action in center.

Manager Joe Girardi didn't offer up a timetable for Heathcott's return, but said definitively that it will be longer than the minimum 15 days required by his DL stint. With Heathcott and Jacoby Ellsbury (knee) out of action, the skipper suggested he will think about playing Brett Gardner in center field more frequently.

Heathcott was scratched from Thursday's lineup with a sore right quadriceps, YES Network's Meredith Marakovits reports.

Heathcott was set to start for the fifth time in eight games since Jacoby Ellsbury (knee) hit the DL, but the quad injury will prevent him from taking the field. The extent of the injury is uncertain, but consider Heathcott day-to-day until more information becomes available. Chris Young will start in center field in his absence.

Heathcott went 2-for-5 with his first career home run, two runs scored and two RBI in Monday's 14-1 win over Kansas City.

Heathcott, who was recalled last week, started in center field and in the nine-hole in the order for the third time in four days. Many thought Chris Young would take over the primary role with Jacoby Ellsbury (knee) landing on the DL, but Young is just 6-for-41 (.146 average) so far this month and it seems the lefty-swinging Heathcott may see most of the time in center instead. Heathcott was hitting .285/.335/.358 with one home run and five steals (nine attempts) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to his promotion.

Heathcott made his MLB debut as a pinch runner in Wednesday's loss to Washington. He stayed in to play center field after running for Mark Teixeira in the eighth inning, but didn't get to bat.

With just a .686 OPS in Triple-A, it's hard to imagine Heathcott having much of a fantasy impact while he's up with the Yankees, though he can run a little.

Heathcott will be recalled from Triple-A on Wednesday, YES Network's Jack Curry reports.

With Jacoby Ellsbury (knee) landing on the DL, the Yankees needed to add someone capable of playing center field. While Heathcott's prospect stock has faded over the last few years, he is still a very capable defender in center, even if his offensive ability may leave people wanting more. Look for Chris Young to see the majority of the playing time in center with Heathcott getting the occasional start against tougher righties.

Heathcott suffered a season-ending knee injury last year and was later removed from the club's 40-man roster, but he still broke camp in the big leagues at the start. The 24-year-old will likely begin the year with Double-A Trenton, where he slashed .261/.327/.411 with 15 steal in 103 games in 2013 after playing in just nine contests last season.

Heathcott (knee) is expected to be fully healthy at the start of spring training, the Westchester Journal News reports.

The Yankees' medical staff has cleared Heathcott to go through all baseball activities. Duration may be an issue initially, but Heathcott is no longer on the 40-man roster and appears to be a long way away from contributing to the Yankees at this point.

This move comes as a bit of a surprise, as Heathcott was very recently considered one of the Yankees' better hitting prospects. He was the 29th overall pick in the 2009 draft, and profiled as a Brett Gardner type of player coming up, but injuries and a lack of performance at the plate seem to have made him expendable. He should have no problem catching on with another club on a minor league deal.
