C Geovany Soto will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow and is expected to miss a minimum of three months, the club announced. Soto will have surgery Tuesday to remove loose bodies in his right elbow, which landed him on the disabled list twice this season. The 34-year-old, who was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on Monday, is batting .190 with three homers and nine RBIs in 13 games after signing a one-year deal with Chicago in the offseason.

The Oakland Athletics claimed left-handed relief pitcher Giovanni Soto off waivers from the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.Soto was designated for assignment Saturday to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber, who was activated from the 60-day disabled list following knee surgery in April. Schwarber was put on the World Series roster Tuesday and went 1-for-3 with a double, walk and two strikeouts in the 6-0 loss to the Cleveland Indians in Game 1.Soto began the 2016 season in the Cleveland Indians organization but was traded to the Cubs on April 11 for cash considerations. He spent the entire season at Triple-A Iowa where he went 1-3 with a 5.14 ERA in 33 relief appearances. The 25-year-old left-hander struck out 55 batters in 49 innings but also walked 31.Soto made his major league debut with Cleveland in 2015 and did not allow a run or issue a walk in six games over 3 1/3 innings. The native of Puerto Rico was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 21st round of the 2009 draft and was traded to the Indians July 28, 2010 for shortstop Jhonny Peralta.

LHP Giovanni Soto was acquired by the Cubs from the Indians on Monday for cash considerations and optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Soto, 24, made his major league debut with the Indians last season and pitched six scoreless relief appearances covering 3 1/3 innings. With Triple-A Columbus, he was 2-1 with two saves and a 2.68 ERA in 46 appearances.

LHP Giovanni Soto was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday after struggling through five Cactus League appearances this spring. Soto posted a 7.71 ERA with six walks, five hits and one hit-by-pitch in 4 2/3 innings and showed up at camp on Wednesday feeling ill."By his own admission, he didn't command the ball very well, as well as he can," manager Terry Francona said. "Four innings in spring training doesn't define somebody's career."

Soto's contract was purchased from Triple-A Columbus on Thursday.

Soto posted a 2.68 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 53.2 innings with Columbus and should help ease the stress on the Indians' bullpen down the stress.

Indians prospect Giovanni Soto was hammered by the Reds in his spring debut on Friday, allowing five runs on three hits and a pair of walks in only 2/3 of an inning.

The 21-year-old lefty was acquired by the Tribe in July of 2010 when Jhonny Peralta was dealt to the Tigers. He posted a 3.93 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 22 starts at Double-A Akron in 2012, while fanning 100 in 121 1/3 innings. He has an electric arm, but is still very raw and has to improve his command before he's a candidate to join the big league roster.
