DH Cody Asche was pinch hit for after striking out in his first at-bat Wednesday. "There are standards for being a White Sox," Asche said. "If you don't meet them sometimes the manager has to take action." Asche is hitting .102, but was back in the lineup Thursday and contributed a two-run double. "Nobody is going to discount that the numbers are not there but he still gives us a left-handed stick against a right-handed arm," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "And he has a history in his past of success. He's actually a good hitter. Like I said, it's early in the season."

DH Cody Asche might be perking up at the plate, singling in a start Saturday and then getting his fourth hit of the season in his first time up Sunday. "I think he's actually had over the last 2 1/2 weeks or so, he's had some good at-bats," manager Rick Renteria said. "He hasn't had the outcome or the results he wanted; there's been others that have been kind of out in front a little bit. All in all I think he still gives you a really good at-bat when he gets in the box. He tries to control the (strike) zone as well as he can."

DH Cody Asche could receive plenty of action this season as the team's designated hitter, along with receiving spot starts at the corner outfield and corner infield positions. Asche was penciled in the No. 6 spot of the lineup before Monday's game was postponed by rain. "He's a professional hitter," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "He's given us some really good at-bats over the spring. He's been in the big leagues before." Asche spent the past four seasons with the Phillies.

Asche was announced as a pinch-hitter in the seventh Saturday but then was taken out in favor of pinch-hitter Maikel Franco, who flied out.
Sat Aug 13 201605:06OF Cody Asche optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday
OF Cody Asche was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday. Manager Pete Mackanin said Asche, hitting .213 in 57 games, was being sent down to "figure himself out," and added that he will be working at third base (his natural position) as well as first base in the minors. That, the manager added, will "make him more versatile, which increases his value." Mackanin would not commit to Asche being recalled when rosters expand Sept. 1, the manager saying only that he would wait and see how Asche performs at the plate. "I can't sit here and say I got screwed or anything," Asche said. "It's a performance business. If you don't perform you have to go somewhere else."

LF Cody Asche hid 10 doubles in June, the first Phillie with at least 10 in a month since 2B Chase Utley and OF Marlon Byrd did so in May 2014. Asche had three hits Wednesday and is hitting .354 with nine doubles and eight RBIs in his last 14 games.

LF Cody Asche went 3-for-4 with a homer, two doubles and two RBIs in Wednesday's loss to Toronto, and appears to be hitting his stride after missing the first two months of the season with an oblique injury. "He looks like he shortened his swing the last few games, and that's good to see," manager Pete Mackanin said. Asche, hitting .256 in 13 games with the Phillies, did not disagree, saying he has been "trying to do some things to help me be on time more, so I can square up my pitch more often. I think my first five or six games I had some pitches to do some damage on, and I kind of foul-tipped them. You're battling from there." Wednesday's game, he added, did wonders for his confidence, just to make sure you feel like you're providing something to the lineup and you're not just there, as he put it. "No one wants to just be there, eating at-bats. When you're in the lineup, you want to bring something to the table for the team.

LF Cody Asche has started all four games since making his season debut on June 2. The left fielder has two hits in 12 at-bats since his return. LF Cody Asche (oblique strain) was activated from the disabled list and made his season debut Thursday against Milwaukee, going 0-for-2. Asche, who hit .245 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs in 129 games for the Phillies last season, hit .159 while splitting 15 rehab-assignment games between Single-A Clearwater, Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. "I'm hoping that he can add some offense to what we've got," manager Pete Mackanin said. The question is how much Mackanin will sacrifice defensively in the process, since Asche is a converted third baseman and Jimmy Paredes, who started in right field Thursday, is not regarded as a strong gloveman. "We need some more offense," Mackanin said. "Obviously the defense in the outfield has been very big for us, but we're not getting enough production from three or four guys that I expected more production from. Not that I'm going to stay with this type of a lineup, but I want to see if we can get something going offensively - get our confidence back. You have a good day and get a bunch of hits, and it kind of takes the heat off and you start feeling more comfortable at the plate."

OF Cody Asche, who has yet to play this season because of a strained left oblique, homered Monday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley while continuing his rehab assignment. Asche, who said after a game with Double-A Reading last Thursday that he is "close" to being ready to return to the major leagues, is 3-for-16 (.188) with two homers in four games for the IronPigs. In all he is 8-for-50 (.160) in 13 games during his rehab stint, which has seen him play for Class A Clearwater in addition to Reading and Lehigh Valley. The Phillies must either activate him or option him to the minors by Wednesday, and manager Pete Mackanin said Asche could "possibly" return to the big leagues then.
