Dodgers signed OF Gabe Kapler to a minor league contract.
He'll also get an invite to major league spring training. The 35-year-old Kapler batted just .210/.288/.290 over 140 plate appearances with the Rays last season, but has the reputation as a solid right-handed bat off the bench who can also play all three outfield positions.

According to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, the Dodgers are close to signing Gabe Kapler to a minor league contract.
Kapler, 35, batted just .210/.288/.290 with two home runs and 14 RBI in 140 plate appearances against the Rays last season, largely due to a complete collapse against left-handed pitching. He'll have to show he can still hit southpaws during spring training.

Tue Sep 7 201014:07Kapler not expected to return for another wk
Gabe Kapler (ankle) is not expected to return for another week.
Kapler served as the Rays' starting right fielder against southpaws at one point this season, but he didn't exactly hit the cover off the ball and the Rays have an awfully crowded and awfully talented outfield. "We're going to try to reevaluate it in about a week or 10 days (to see) what's going on with him," Tampa manager Joe Maddon said. "Right now we're okay."

Rays placed OF Gabe Kapler on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 15, with a right ankle sprain.
Kapler probably could play right now, but he took one for the team with Carlos Pena being activated from the disabled list Monday. The veteran outfielder is batting just .210/.288/.290 with two homers and 14 RBI this season and is likely to return in September.
Tue Jun 29 201023:38Rays activate Kapler from DL
Rays activated OF Gabe Kapler from the 15-day disabled list.
Kapler has been sidelined since earlier this month due to a right hip flexor strain. He returns to a .217/.305/.277 batting line to go along with one home run and eight RBI in 83 at-bats this season.
Tue Jun 29 201017:52Kapler (hip) close to being activated
Rays manager Joe Maddon said that Gabe Kapler (hip) is "really close" to being activated from the disabled list.
Kapler is 1-for-13 (.077) over four games with High-A Charlotte, but the important part is that he is feeling healthy again. Maddon didn't rule out his possible return on Wednesday. The Rays would have to make a corresponding roster move in order to do so, which could spell the end for Hank Blalock.
